There has been a lot of bad news in the financial community in 2008. The flames of
the sub-prime crisis have spread beyond the banking borders to the auto industry,
retail, construction, health services and have left no industry untouched. The importance
of housing in our economy cannot be underestimated. We at NewtownSavings
Bank have no sub-prime loans and therefore are not experiencing the same issues as
Wall Street and the mega-banks. In fact, 2008 was an excellent year with respect
to mortgage related lending. In 2008, the Bank originated $281 million in residential
and home newtown savings bank stony hill related loans. This year we were recognized by the Commercial
Record, a financial trade publication, for being among the top 25 banks in residential
loan closings in the State of

to work with and help our local businesses with their financing needs. Total
assets for the year grew $111 million, or 13%, to $939 million as of December 31, 2008.
In 2008, the Bank added our 13 th branch in the White Hills section of Shelton, our
second Shelton location. We are pleased to report that the branch has attained over
$29 million in deposits since opening in May. Also in Shelton, our Bridgeport Avenue
branch doubled its deposits in 2008. Our strategy of having two branches in that
great community has truly paid off. In early 2009 we relocated our Southbury branch
to 685 Main Street South adjacent to the Southbury Green. We believe this will
enhance our visibility and better serve this community. In October, we successfully
relocated our Trumbull branch from the interior of Trumbull Center to a more easily
accessible location on White Plains Road. We are optimistic that our plans to place a
second Monroe office on Route 25 in the Clock Tower Plaza will result in construction
beginning in 2009.
We are quite pleased with the growth of our branch banking system and the products
and services that they offer. Our EChecking product which provides free ATM services
worldwide has been successful in bringing new accounts to the Bank. This year the
Bank opened almost 3,500 new checking accounts. Also this year, we have seen an
increased interest in our cash management products, particularly our new remote
M E S S A G E T O O U R C O M M U N I T I E S
deposit capture services. Through the installation of a simple scanning device our
business customers are able to make deposits right from their office. This has
enabled us to provide convenience for some of our existing business customers
and to create new relationships with businesses outside of our branch
footprint. At the end of 2008 we had 68 scanners installed in our
customer locations.
Our mutual charter allows us to focus on the needs of our
community even in these tough economic times. As the tree
on the next page indicates, the Bank has weathered many
economic storms over cbk wall decor past
153 years, and yet, we keep growing
stronger. None of this could be
possible without the continued
support of our Board of Trustees and
the hard work of all our employees. The
Bank’s strong Senior Management team
continues to support the Bank’s Mission of independence.
Finally, the Board recognizes the hard work of
John Martocci, the Bank’s CEO of the past 15 years.
Throughout his career at NewtownSavingsBank, he has
positioned the Bank to where it is today. His loyalty,
commitment and hard work will always be remembered.
Mr. Martocci will remain as Chairman of the Board as he
passes this precious jewel (or seedling ) to John Trentacosta,
who assumed the CEO responsibilities at the
beginning of 2009.

“Continued Expansion Amid Banking Crisis,” is what
Daniel Cruson wrote about NewtownSavingsBank.
Dan isn’t a financial forecaster, he is a historian, and he
was writing about our expansion through the 1980’s
banking crisis. He could have been writing about 2008
and 2009 as we continue to expand and continue to
actively lend through this current “banking crisis.”
As this report is being written, we are in the midst of
some of the heaviest mortgage application volume
that we have ever experienced. People and businesses are applying for loans with
us, we believe, because we are Safe, Sound, Secure, and Strong.
Our Guaranteed Mortgages continue to be popular as individuals now want more
assurance about who services their mortgage. We continue to expand our delivery
of mortgages, including our Preferred Employee Program (PEP) that provides
discounts for employees of businesses who join this special program.

Our 2007 AnnualReport cover announced the launch of EChecking. EChecking is a
free checking account plus free use of ATMs everywhere. The EChecking program
exceeded all of our expectations. In our business we don’t need a large proprietary
network of ATMs like the mega-banks because we
provide free access to more ATMs than they do.
ATMs aren’t the only way people access their accounts.
We were one of the first local community banks to roll out Mobile Banking in 2008.
This service provides free banking services via cell phones and other mobile devices
to individuals and businesses.
The number of Remote Deposit users swelled during 2008. Again, we were one of
the first local community banks to provide this service to our Commercial customers.
With Remote Deposit, our business customers can literally deposit paper checks from
the computer in their office.
For those of you that have one, you really know the advantages of our Guaranteed
CD. When rates dropped this year, many of you were able to roll for another term at
the original rate.
Our all-Internet access USweep Money Market Account is now in its third year. We
offer essentially the same account that those orange fellows offer but at a better rate,
plus your money stays right here at
NewtownSavingsBank. Accounts can
be opened at www.nsbusweep.com.

fit for cross-promotion of the business
and the Bank. Our new marketing
agreement with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey team was an
unplanned and very pleasant surprise. They draw their fan base from
families and small to mid-size businesses, just like us. If you haven’t
been to a game, go – we’ll provide the tickets.

NewtownSavingsBank and the NewtownSavingsBank Foundation provide financial

volunteer for many of these same organizations. Over 130 community organizations
have a NewtownSavingsBank employee or trustee as a volunteer. All of our Officers
volunteer for at least one community organization and we’ve set a goal of 100%
employee volunteerism in 2009.
We support many different types of organizations. Supporting education has always
had a special place in our plans.

For years we have been a major sponsor of scholarship funds, including the
Newtown Scholarship Foundation and the Woodbury Scholarship Foundation.
We help students of all ages (K thru12) search for their potential careers with our
support of the Town of Trumbull Business/Education Initiative.
We also enjoy the arts and support them financially as well as
with our people. NewtownSavingsBank is now the major
sponsor of the New Haven Symphony’s Pops concerts
in Shelton.

White Hills – The White Hills branch was the big addition for us in 2008. We are
so happy to have a second Shelton office, especially in the White Hills Shopping
Plaza. The response from the White Hills area is wonderful and we thank
everyone that came out to our events; including the very few that did not
become customers.
Trumbull – We had a great opportunity for a more prominent location and we
jumped on it. When you visit us in Trumbull, stop by our new location right on
White Plains Avenue.
Monroe, Clock Tower Plaza – We are going to add more coverage between our
Sand Account services phoenix arizona phone call and Trumbull locations. In late 2009 or early 2010, we’ll add a second
Monroe location on Route 25 in Monroe. We think this new branch will serve not
only the people and business in Monroe but will serve parts of Trumbull and
Easton as well.
Southbury – January 27, 2009 marked our 40th anniversary
serving Southbury. A few days later we moved the original
branch to a brand new building on Main
Street South. If you haven’t already
