Tennessee DMV Test Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a driver license cost?

To obtain a full Tennessee driver license, you’ll need to pay a fee of $28. If you are under the age of 18 and applying for an intermediate restricted license, it will cost $24.50. If you are applying for an intermediate unrestricted license, it will cost $2. In addition to the licensing fee, you should be prepared for potential application fees, testing fees, processing fees, or some combination of these costs. Keep in mind that fees are subject to change, and the most effective way to stay up to date on current licensing costs is to reach out to your local DMV.

How hard is the drivers test?

Some may find it more challenging than others, but with the right amount of studying and practice, any driver should be able to pass the Tennessee road test! During this test, a driver will be expected to safely operate a vehicle in traffic, follow signs and signals, communicate with other drivers, and generally follow the rules of the road. The more technical aspects of the Tennessee road test will include backing and parking. Many find these technical elements of the road test to be the most challenging, so applicants may consider extra practice on these tasks before taking the test.

How old to get drivers license?

In the state of Tennessee, a driver may be a minimum of 18 years old to hold a regular Driver License. Drivers must be at least 15 years old to get a Class PD Learner Permit, 16 years old for an Intermediate Restricted License, and 17 years old for an Intermediate Unrestricted License. To work up to full driving privileges, minors are required to go through a gradual licensing process with several levels of driving practice. A driver should be aware of any restrictions that are placed on their type of license, such as the number of passengers allowed in their vehicle at one time and whether or not they are allowed to drive during nighttime hours.

How to practice parallel parking without cones?

In Tennessee, applicants are not required to parallel park before they can get their license. However, even if you don’t think you’ll be parallel parking after you get your license, it’s an important skill to practice and learn. If you don’t have access to cones to help you practice, you can get creative when outlining a parking space. Weighted boxes, propped up brooms, or a chalk outline can work just as well as cones. If you’re comfortable, and under proper supervision, you may also practice in low-traffic areas by parallel parking near cars that have already been parked on the road.

How to prepare for driving test

To best prepare for a driving test, a new driver in Tennessee can do three things. First, each applicant should study the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, which is full of important laws, essential driving instruction, and valuable safety tips. In addition to studying the manual, a driver can choose to complete a driver’s education course. Finally, a driver should practice supervised driving while holding a Learner Permit. To be sure they’re thoroughly prepared for the driving test, a driver should continue to practice supervised driving until they are completely comfortable behind the wheel, even if that takes a longer period of time than expected.

how to prepare for permit test

When it’s time to prepare for your written knowledge test, the first thing you should do is check out the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual. The manual holds all the information you’ll need to pass the test, including important laws and essential driving instruction. After reading through the manual, check out some online practice quizzes! There’s no better way to assess how prepared you are than by taking a test just like the one you’ll face at your local driver license service center. In addition to studying on your own, it’s a good idea to take a driver’s education course from an approved driving school. Learning from an instructor who knows the ins and outs of state driving laws is a great way to help cement them in your mind.

State officials remind Tennesseans of REAL ID deadline

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — As of Thursday, Tennesseans have exactly one year to get their REAL IDs. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security reminded people that in one year, the Renew license online tn ID Act of 2005 will go into effect.

Beginning October 1, 2021, anyone wanting to board commercial flights within the U.S. will be required to have a REAL ID-compliant license or an acceptable alternative. Alternatives can be a valid United States passport or military ID.

The deadline was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the national emergency declaration.

The REAL ID Renew license online tn of 2005 establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards, according to state officials.

Who needs a REAL ID?

Anyone who flies domestically within the United States seeks entry to a military base, nuclear facility or certain federal buildings after October 1, 2021 and plans to use a state-issued license or ID as a form of identification.

Is a REAL ID the only form of identification that will be accepted?

No, a valid U.S. passport or military ID are other common forms of identification that will be accepted in place of a REAL ID.

A full list of other acceptable alternative forms of identification can be found here.

What documents are needed to apply for a REAL ID?

To apply for a REAL ID, Tennesseans must provide one proof of citizenship or legal presence, one proof of their full Social Security Number, and two proofs of Tennessee residency along with documentation to support any name change from your proof of citizenship document. A full list of accepted documents can be found here.

Where can you apply for a REAL ID?

The first application for a REAL ID must be made in person at a Driver Services Center or participating County Clerk Partner. Participating locations can be found here.

How much is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID costs the same as a standard credential. However, if you wish to obtain a REAL ID outside of your renewal period, there will be a duplicate charge of $8-12.

What if you don’t need a REAL ID?

Those who do not wish to obtain a REAL ID will receive a standard credential indicated by “Not for REAL ID Act Purposes” on the front of the credential. Your current or standard credential will continue to be accepted for general identification purposes such as driving, purchasing alcohol or tobacco products, applying for federal benefits, voting, and access to hospitals, banks, post offices and federal courts.

More information about the REAL ID can be found here.
