What is TruStage insurance company?

TruStage is the brand name of a credit union-focused insurance program from CUNA Mutual Insurance. CUNA traces its roots back to 1935, when credit unions were first formed. They aimed to help average Americans with finances.

The insurance branch was created to provide additional financial solutions that were previously out of the general public’s reach, such as life insurance.

While TruStage is generally marketed through credit unions, its policies are actually available to anyone. Credit union membership is not required, but the site does push visitors to consider joining one.

TruStage Insurance Agency is a brand and an agency service rather than an insurer. The company operates as a subsidiary of CMFG Life. They underwrite its products and partner with other insurance companies to provide products. It does not underwrite directly.

What are TruStage insurance reviews?

When you start to look at all of the different reviews, you easily see that people are pleased with this company. Their products currently protect more than twenty million peoples.

Some life insurance companies will cancel your coverage when your health starts to fail. However, that is not the case with TruStage. As long as your premiums are paid, they will not cancel your coverage because of things like age or illness.

Consumers are also very pleased with the fact that it is easy to get coverage with this insurance company. They state that the process is simple when applying for coverage.

So, if you are looking for a well-rated life insurance company, TruStage may be your perfect match. They offer excellent coverage and for many can be quite affordable. That being said, it is important to note that TruStage insurance is known for being pricier than other life insurance companies.

What are TruStage insurance company’s products?

The focus of TruStage is life insurance products. They offer term life insurance, whole life policies, and accidental deal and dismemberment policies. However, these are not the only types of insurance that you can find with TruStage.

As mentioned above, You can also get car and home insurance products through TruStage. Esurance and Liberty Mutual underwrite these policies. You may be able to save some money by checking their car insurance rates.

As these products have been covered in our reviews of those companies, we will not describe them here. This review will focus on the products that are underwritten by TruStage’s parent company, CMFG Life.

What type of TruStage life insurance policies are offered?

TruStage offers both term life insurance and whole life insurance, including a guaranteed acceptance life insurance program. All of the policies are a simplified issue program with no medical exams usaa insurance agent near me can buy life insurance term life policies with death benefit amounts starting at $5,000 and going up to $300,000. Issue age is between 18 and 69.

The policy is renewable up to age 80 and is priced based on age bands that are five years each (25, 30, 35, 40, etc.). When the insured hits a new age band, the premium goes up accordingly. Changes to health status do not affect the premiums as long as the policy is kept in force.

Whole life has available death benefit amounts ranging from $1,000 up to $100,000. Issue age is between 18 and 85. This is a traditional whole life policy with a guaranteed death benefit and a cash accumulation account, and level premiums for the duration of the policy.

There is also a guaranteed acceptance version of the whole life that requires no medical questions at all. Because of this, the death benefit amounts available are lower, between $1,000 and $25,000, making this a likely choice for a final expenses plan.

What is Log on to chase online banking AD&D Policy?

Many people don’t realize that AD&D stands for accidental death and dismemberment. This means if something catastrophic happens in your life and you leave this world unexpectedly or lose an arm or a leg, you have coverage for yourself or your family.

The TruStage AD&D policy is available at no cost from participating credit unions, which may choose to offer their members between $1,000 and $5,000 in coverage as a benefit of membership.

Those whose credit unions do not offer any coverage can still purchase the product, and those who do have base coverage at no usaa insurance agent near me can add on additional coverage to increase the benefits.

Every two years, the benefit increases by 5% at no additional cost, and the premium stays the same over the years. The maximum coverage available is $300,000.

There are no health questions for this product, and acceptance is guaranteed—this makes sense since AD&D only pays out for accidents and not on illnesses.

Accepting the free coverage through your credit union will likely result in solicitation attempts as TruStage looks to sell you a higher level of coverage as well as other products.

What are TruStage life insurance rates?

TruStage makes it very easy to determine how much your coverage will cost, with online quoting and a rate chart available for the term life product.

We ran a quote for a 30-year-old male for term life insurance. Our rate quote came back at $42.50 a month for $100,000 in coverage, which matches the rate shown in the chart for that age band.

This is a pretty expensive quote. Considering that the coverage is a simplified issue with no medical exam. It is also important to look at the chart and see how the coverage increases in cost over time. By the age of 50, after 20 years of coverage, this policy will cost the same person $114.50.

By comparison, we ran a whole life quote for the same amount and the same death benefit and came back with a rate of $83. That is lower, but it should be noted that this premium stays the same for the duration while the term starts lower.

It is important to look at how long you want the coverage to last. Additionally, look at how much you will pay over the duration of coverage. If you are looking for coverage to last into your senior years, whole will probably cost less in the long run.

We also looked at the guaranteed acceptance life, bumping our sample age up to 45 to meet the minimum issue age. A policy with $10,000 in coverage came back at $50 a month. Which is not unreasonable.

How do TruStage’s rates compare to rates from other life insurance companies?

These rates are higher than what we have seen elsewhere for similar coverage. Even with simplified or guaranteed issue options, they first security bank bozeman 19th pricey. It is also worth noting that the company does charge a tobacco use surcharge on term policies. This can impact your rate substantially.

In this table, we have included some sample rates from a few of the top insurers in the United States for you to compare to TruStage’s rates.

It is always a great idea to compare life insurance quotes to those of multiple insurance companies so you can ensure you’re getting the best rates and the best coverage.

How do you file TruStage claims?

Claims can be filed Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. by calling the toll-free number. This number can be found in the claims FAQ section of their website. An email address and mailing address are also provided.

Claims are handled through CUNA Mutual Group. The parent company and underwriter CMFG are a part of the process. As an agency and consumer-facing brand, TruStage itself does not administer policies or handle claims.

After all the documentation is received, the insured can expect the settlement to be sent via check within one to three business days. That is a quick turnaround time if accurate; of course, contestable claims will take longer to review.

How does TruStage life insurance rate, and what are TruStage life insurance’s consumer reviews?

According to the Insurance Information Institute, roughly 1,000 insurance companies sell life insurance in the United States. This means that narrowing your search down is critical to find a company that meets your needs at an affordable cost.

An important aspect of comparison shopping, apart from comparing quotes, is to look at reviews and ratings of the companies you’re considering usaa insurance agent near me reputable rating agencies and consumers.

TruStage has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with 18 customer complaints on file and nine reviews left on the page for an overall rating of just under two stars.

Several people appear to believe that the AD&D coverage offered through TruStage and its credit union is a scam and were not happy the credit union shared their contact information. A few TruStage life insurance complaints address billing and claims issues.

We also looked at the CMFG Life Insurance BBB page, which also shows an A+ rating. There are 28 complaints filed here and two reviews. Both are negative and are in regards to billing.

TruStage Insurance Agency reviews number an incredible 811 on Google with an overall 4.8-star rating. Usaa insurance agent near me is remarkable because we have seen larger and better-known insurers with a fraction of this number of reviews.

A scroll through the comments shows many people remarking on the ease of the online application process but little in the way of experience with claims.

TruStage Life Insurance: what’s the bottom line?

TruStage life insurance company markets through credit unions. This is how most people find the company. It draws customers in with the free basic AD&D offer. They will attempt to upsell to more coverage.

TruStage’s policies are pricey based on what we have seen for similar coverage elsewhere. Affordable TruStage life insurance may not be an option. But doing your research is always a good idea. For some, it is quite affordable.

It does have a remarkable reputation based on Google reviews. So, if you prefer to pay a little more for a reputable company, TruStage might be worth a closer look.

td bank business account zelle insurance and financial services company

The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) is what is the capital of wyoming cheyenne San Antonio-based Fortune 500 diversified financial services group of companies including a Texas Department of Insurance-regulated reciprocal inter-insurance exchange and subsidiaries offering banking, investing, and insurance to people and families who serve, or served, in the United States Armed Forces.[6][7][8] At the end of 2017, it had 12.4 million members.[9]

USAA was founded in 1922 in Local food products near me Antonio by a group of 25 U.S. Army officers as a mechanism for mutual self-insurance when they were unable to secure auto insurance because of the perception that they, as military officers, were a high-risk group.[10][11] USAA has since expanded to offer banking and insurance services to past and present members of the Armed Forces, officers and enlisted, and their families. The company ranked No. 100 in the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.[12]

History[edit]

The organization was originally called the United States Army Automobile Association. In 1924, the name was changed to United Services Automobile Association, when commissioned officers of other U.S. military services became usaa insurance agent near me for membership. The company was formed based on a meeting of twenty-five United States Army Officers on June 20, 1922, at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, to discuss the procurement of reliable and economical auto insurance. Despite initial success, by the late 1920s a dispute between competing factions for control of the company threatened its long term viability.[13] The issue was resolved when feuding members agreed to hire a leader from outside, resulting in the 1928 appointment of Major General Ernest Hinds as general manager and secretary-treasurer.[13] Hinds provided stability and remained in the position until his 1941 death.[13]

USAA is headquartered in northwest San Antonio, occupying a 286-acre (116 ha) former horse farm.[14][15]

USAA is a pioneer of the concept of direct marketing; most of its business is conducted over the Internet or telephone using employees instead of agents. Until the 1960s, the bulk of its business was conducted via mail. In the late 1960s, USAA began a transition from mail to phone-based sales and service. It launched a toll-free number in 1978, and Internet sales and service in 1999 via its website.[citation needed]

The organization started offering homeowner's and life insurance in the 1960s, and brokerage and investment management services in the 1970s, and banking services in the 1980s.[citation needed]

The company opened its first office outside Texas in Frankfurt, West Germany, in 1952, followed by the opening of the London office in 1962.

USAA offered restricted membership to civilians between September 2009 and August 2013. This membership provided access to USAA's investment products, most bank deposit products, and life insurance. Auto and property insurance policies were not included for non-military members due to eligibility restrictions.[16]

In 2015, USAA employed more than 32,000 people at its offices throughout the world.[17]

On Usaa insurance agent near me 26, 2019, the Charles Schwab Corporation announced it would acquire USAA's investment and brokerage accounts for $1.8 billion.[18] The deal with Charles Schwab closed on May 26, 2020.[19]

Lines of business[edit]

Property, casualty, and life insurance[edit]

USAA offers a range of personal property and casualty (P&C) insurance, including automobile insurance, homeowner insurance, renters' insurance, as well as umbrella and personal property insurance. In addition to P&C insurance, USAA provides whole life insurance, term life insurance, and annuities. USAA's life insurance policies, while not completely unique in the industry, are different from most offerings since they do not include a war-exclusion clause.[20]

Banking[edit]

Banking services are provided by USAA Federal Savings Bank. The bank was established on December 30, 1983. According to USAA's 2015 Annual Report to Members, USAA held over $62.549 billion in deposits with more than 6.3 million accounts.[citation needed]

USAA Federal Savings Bank's bank lobby located in San Antonio is its only full-service banking location. Other cities, however, hold financial centers, often near military bases, which provide advice and assistance in obtaining services of any kind offered by USAA, in addition to opening those accounts online.

Banking services can be accessed in person, by mail, by phone, or through the internet. USAA Federal Savings Bank provides members with the ability to deposit checks to their accounts using mobile applications on the AppleiPhone and iPad and mobile devices with Google's Android operating system.[21]

Major banking competitors include Bank of America-Military Bank, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, and Navy Federal Credit Union.[22]

Investing and financial planning[edit]

USAA provides Education 529 Plans for its members, but members are referred to its strategic partners, Charles Schwab Corporation and Victory Capital Management for other investment services such as brokerage and trading, mutual funds & ETFs.[23][24][25]

Target market[edit]

USAA's mission statement indicates its focus to serve its niche market, which consists of usaa insurance agent near me of the U.S. military and their immediate families. To that end, the association has always marketed directly to members of the U.S. military. USAA membership is offered to officers and enlisted personnel, including those on active duty, those in the National Guard and Reserve, Officer candidates in commissioning programs (Academy, ROTC, OCS/OTS) and all those who have served in the aforementioned categories and who have retired or have been discharged honorably.[26][27] Children of USAA members are also eligible to purchase USAA's P&C insurance products, and former members of USAA are allowed to resume membership at any time (without an age limit).

Historically, only U.S. military officers (among certain other federally sworn officers) were eligible to join USAA, with descendants of USAA members able to purchase insurance from USAA-CIC. It did not matter if one was an active duty or retired officer; one could join at any time. In 1973, membership was opened to don jose mexican restaurant near me of the National Guard and Reserves, and in 1996, eligibility was expanded to enlisted members of the armed services. As the number of persons who have served on active duty in an enlisted status in the U.S. Armed Forces is quite large, USAA chose to limit the establishment of eligibility to those who were currently on active duty or who had recently separated. The same time limit on establishment of eligibility was then applied to military officers. In 2008, USAA expanded membership eligibility to all military personnel and retirees, and all veterans who separated after 1996.[26] In November 2009, USAA expanded eligibility requirements to offer coverage to anyone who has ever served honorably in the US Military.[27]

Leadership[edit]

USAA president and CEO Stuart Parker retired on February 1, 2020, and USAA chose a replacement from within: Wayne Peacock, the company's president of property and casualty insurance. Wayne Peacock is currently the CEO of USAA.

Led by USAA Chairman of the Board Admiral Thomas B. Fargo, USN (Ret.), USAA's board of directors named Wayne Peacock CEO-elect in January 2020 to succeed former CEO Stuart Parker after his retirement in February 2020. Peacock became CEO in February 2020 and is the first USAA CEO who is not veteran of the armed forces.[28] He has been with USAA since 1988, serving in various leadership positions including President of the Property and Casualty Insurance Group.[citation needed]

USAA former CEOs include retired Air Force brigadier generalRobert F. McDermott. The USAA office building in San Antonio was constructed under his tenure, and McDermott was behind USAA's shift from service-by-mail to service-by-phone.[29] He was succeeded as CEO by retired Air Force General Robert T. Herres.[30] It was under Herres that USAA expanded its services to enlisted members of the military and developed Internet based financial services.[31] Following General Herres as CEO was Robert G. Davis, a former Army officer who came to USAA with experience in a variety of financial services companies. Davis is said to have changed the culture at USAA; during his time at USAA, membership, assets and net worth grew significantly.[32]

His tenure, however, was not without controversy. Davis oversaw USAA's first layoffs and by some reports had a confrontational style of leadership. Davis had indicated to USAA employees that he intended to continue to lead USAA until 2010, however, he retired in December 2007.[33] The nature of his retirement seems to have been precipitous, as USAA CEO Josue Robles has stated that upon assuming the role of CEO, "I thought I was just going to be a temporary CEO and (the board) said, 'Guess what? The permanent CEO is you'."[34]

Locations[edit]

Besides its headquarters in San Antonio, USAA has a second major office in Phoenix. USAA also has offices in Chesapeake, Virginia; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Highland Falls, New York; Plano, Texas; and Tampa, Florida. Internationally, USAA has offices in London and Frankfurt.[35][36][37][38][39]

On May 27, 2021, USAA announced that it will be adding an additional 750 employees to its 100 employee base in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company will be leasing 90,000 square feet of space in a new building in South End called The Square. Company employees will start moving in at the end of 2021.[40]

How to Locate USAA Insurance Agents

The United States Army Automobile Association (USAA) has 16 offices nationwide and three international offices in London, Frankfurt and Luxembourg. If you're looking for a USAA agent in your city or state, it should be easy to find one. The organization has more than 36,000 employees in the U.S. and overseas. Follow these steps to schedule a meeting or contact an agent by phone.

Tip

Customers may contact USAA by phone or visit a physical office to speak with an agent. The organization's website features guides, articles, videos and other resources that should answer your questions. If you need help, use the chat feature to speak with a virtual agent online.

Find a Local Branch

USAA has been offering financial products and services since 1992. In 2020, the organization had over 13 million members worldwide. Its offering is aimed at U.S. military members and their families. Veterans, cadets and midshipmen may join USAA, too. Registration is free – you just need to meet the eligibility criteria and fill out an online form with your name, date of birth, contact details and other identifying information.

The association has offices in Texas, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Maryland, Florida and Virginia, and it's planning to open a new branch in Charlotte, North Carolina. Three of its offices are located in Texas. To find the nearest USAA location, head over to the company's website and click Corporate Info and Media at the bottom of the page. Select Corporate Overview and then click Learn More under Corporate Offices. Choose a location on the map and call the phone number provided.

Another option is to join USAA, select the products or services you're interested in and then complete an application form. Chances are, you'll hear back from a USAA agent within days. Members can also contact a representative by phone. For example, if you are interested in life insurance, you may call 800-531-5433 to discuss your needs or request more information.

Contact a USAA Agent

USAA has a phone number for general inquiries, too. Simply call 800-531-822 and ask to speak with a USAA agent, or contact specific departments, such as Investments or Shopping and Discounts. If, say, you want to apply for a mortgage, you may call 800-531-0341. Members also have the option to send messages online or chat with a virtual agent. Customers who wish to open a checking or savings account, take out a loan or apply for a credit card may call the company's main phone number.

The organization doesn't sell its products through independent agents. However, you can visit a local branch or call customer service if you need help. Its employees are trained to assist customers with insurance-related inquiries, claims, loan applications and more. Make sure you also read the information available for each product or service. The organization's website features detailed guides, videos and other helpful resources.

Don't forget about the chat feature, as it may come in handy when you need specific information. Go to the company's website and click Help. Next, you'll have to answer some questions about your membership status and the products you're interested in. A virtual agent will direct you to the relevant page. If you still don't find the information you need, contact USAA by phone.

USAA is making efforts to become a digital company. Many of its services can be accessed online, eliminating the need to meet an agent or visit a physical office. Members can open a bank account or apply for a mortgage with just a few clicks. Likewise, they can purchase insurance products or make investments online via the company's website.

Finding an insurance company that meets your needs for an affordable cost can often be a difficult task. With so many companies and policies to choose from, the best way to narrow down your search is to understand your needs and compare life insurance companies.

Reading reviews on life insurance companies, such as this TruStage insurance review, is a great place to start. It provides you with the insight needed to make an educated decision for your life insurance needs.

TruStage Financial Group, Inc. offers a range of insurance products, primarily to members of credit unions. It is part of CUNA Mutual Group and provides access to a variety of personal insurance products.

TruStage insurance offers mainly life insurance (term life insurance, whole life insurance, guaranteed acceptance whole life insurance, and AD&D). However, they can set you up with great car insurance, as well.

It has garnered an A+ rating from the BBB and an additional 4.8/5 from Google. This TruStage review will look at TruStage life insurance rates and how TruStage life insurance quotes stack up to the best insurance companies.

Not sure if TruStage is right for you? Read on for a full TruStage Insurance review and see whether or not affordable TruStage life insurance is available to you.

But first, take a look at some other affordable life insurance rates by entering your ZIP code in our free tool.

TruStage car insurance is offered through both Esurance and Liberty Mutual, and home insurance through the latter. The company also partners with GoHealth to help customers shop for health insurance. Life insurance and AD&D coverage are both underwritten by CMFG.

All of the policies are a simplified issue program with no medical exams required.

You can buy life insurance term life policies with death benefit amounts starting at $5,000 and going up to $300,000.

What is An AD&D Policy?

Many people don’t realize that AD&D stands for accidental death and dismemberment. This means if something catastrophic happens in your life and you leave this world unexpectedly or lose an arm or a leg, you have coverage for yourself or your family.

The TruStage AD&D policy is available at no cost from participating credit unions, which may choose to offer their members between $1,000 and $5,000 in coverage as a benefit of membership.

Those whose credit unions do not offer any coverage can still purchase the product, and those who do have base coverage at no cost can add on additional coverage to increase the benefits.

Even with simplified or guaranteed issue options, they are pricey.

An important aspect of comparison shopping, apart from comparing quotes, is to look at reviews and ratings of the companies you’re considering from reputable rating agencies and consumers.

This is remarkable because we have seen larger and better-known insurers with a fraction of this number of reviews.

Now that you have finished reading TruStage life insurance reviews, you can get free quotes for affordable life insurance providers in your area by entering your ZIP code in our free tool now.

Who has better car insurance: Farmers or USAA®?

The Verdict

USAA is better than Farmers because of its excellent services

But there is one big drawback.

Not a fair fight. Let’s get this out of the way: USAA beats Farmers in almost every category.

Since USAA serves only military members and their families, the company can focus exclusively on delivering the best price, products, and customer service possible for its members.

Best customer service. Reviews and industry analyst reports all find that USAA delivers the best car insurance customer service across the nation.

Meanwhile, Farmers lags behind the competition in this area.

Better value. USAA offers lower premiums and more discounts than Farmers.

Only for military households. Even though USAA comes out far ahead of Farmers, it only accepts military members and their families.

That puts it out of reach of a huge amount of people, which is one big drawback for the average consumer.

Enter your zip code below to view companies that have cheap insurance rates.

 Secured with SHA-256 Encryption

Why One Is Stronger Than The Other

USAA is stronger than Farmers because of its customer service

No better customer experience. USAA offers fast, helpful customer service unmatched by other auto insurers, according to John Schmoll of Frugal Rules.

USAA versus Farmers' Customer Satisfaction

This gets backed up by the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Auto Insurer study, which found USAA outperformed other insurers in customer satisfaction across every region of America.

The same survey found that Farmers car insurance customers ranked their satisfaction with the company somewhere between average and below average.

Excellent coverage. You get dozens of ways for protecting your car by going with USAA, as told by Insure.com.

On top of that, the home, life, and other insurance products the company offers makes it a one-stop shop for all your insurance needs.

People love USAA because of its subscriber savings accounts

USAA pays you back. Getting car insurance through USAA usually sets you up with a Subscribers Savings Account, or SSA.

An SSA makes you eligible for yearly payouts that can go towards your car insurance premiums or right into your bank account, something Ryan Guina of The Military Wallet loved.

Not your average insurer. That’s because unlike most insurance companies, USAA is set up as an inter-insurance exchange.

What this basically means is that members insure each other, rather than the company.

An SSA isn’t a bank account. Because of this, USAA keeps the money it uses for day-to-day operations and paying out claims in subscriber’s savings accounts.

Almost all USAA members have one of these accounts but cannot access them directly.

When your SSA pays out. If USAA has more money than it needs for paying claims or keeping the company running, it can disburse the extra money in an annual payout.

How much you receive will depend on how long you’ve been a USAA member, the existing balance in your SSA, and other factors.

Close your account and get all your money. If you stop using USAA’s services completely, the company gives you all the money in your SSA in a lump sum.

For Ryan Guina, that came out to around $160 when he closed out his wife’s account.

The biggest customer complaint about USAA is its limited contact options

Even though USAA holds an A+ with the Better Business Bureau, it still receives a fair amount of customer complaints.

Poor call center interaction. Claire S. found USAA’s customer service less than satisfactory.

“You will get a different person every time you call and a different answer to the same question from everyone. There’s also no notation of any conversation, so if you have to call back on an issue whoever answers your call will have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Long waits. Sarah P. noted that filing a claim turned into a lengthy ordeal.

“This company has gone down hill and i am cancelling any service i have with them (auto and banking) and i suggest everyone else does before they get screwed by USAA too. Trust me, getting the run around for 3 weeks to be told its a 50 day process is not my idea of good customer service, good business practice or anything.”

The takeaway

USAA has great rates, coverage, and customer service. The extra money from their SSAs only makes this sweeter.

Counter Argument

Then again, Farmers could be better than USAA because of its accessibility

Open to everyone. While USAA only accepts military members and their families, anyone can apply for Farmers car insurance.

That makes it much more accessible for the average person.

How big is the US army?

Multiple companies in one. Farmers owns several smaller insurance companies like 21st Century Insurance and Bristol West.

That means if Farmers can’t get you the coverage or price you want, its agents can see if one of its subsidiaries offers a competitive deal.

People love Farmers because of its agents

Personalized support. USAA only sells and services its car insurance policies over the phone or online, while Farmers does this through its agents, as Finder.com points out.

That means you’ll build a personal connection with an agent that knows you and your needs, rather than a disconnected voice over the phone.

The biggest customer complaint about Farmers is its price

Farmers gets an A+ from the Better Business Bureau but has its fair share of complaints.

Quote and price didn’t match. Alan Z. stated that, “The rates as quoted did not match the premium charged at times.”

High cost. Melena P. writes that she, “Switched to a different insurance purely for rate reasons, high deductibles and I’m not made of money. Never had a problem with Farmers insurance’s services.”

The takeaway

If you don’t qualify for USAA membership, Farmers offers agent-driven support and multiple car insurance options through its subsidiaries.

About The Companies

Farmers is a bit bigger than USAA

Just a little bigger. Farmers barely edges out USAA in terms of company size. It’s the ninth largest insurer in the country with 3.2% market share, while USAA is the tenth with 3%.

About USAA

Started small. USAA was founded in 1922 when a few officers in the military began pooling their money to insure each other’s vehicles.

That investment grew into the huge company that now offers insurance across America.

You’re the ideal customer for USAA if you’re in the armed services or a military family.

You can tell if you’re eligible for USAA insurance by using the following checklist:

  • You are an active, retired, or honorably discharged US military member
  • You previously held USAA auto or property insurance
  • You’re the child of a current or former USAA member who held auto or property insurance
  • You’re an academy cadet, midshipman, in the ROTC on scholarship, or an officer candidate
  • You’re a widow, widower, or former non-remarried spouse of a USAA member. You also had USAA insurance while married.

About Farmer Insurance

Part of another company. Just like how Farmers owns several smaller insurers, the company is actually a subsidiary of Zurich Insurance Group.

You’re the ideal customer for Farmers if you prefer using an agent

Find out whether Farmers would work for you with this cheat-sheet:

  • You’re not in the military nor the spouse or child of someone in the armed forces
  • You prefer using an agent for buying and managing a car insurance policy
  • You plan on bringing down your premiums through bundling multiple types of insurance or insuring more than one vehicle with Farmers

The takeaway

Farmers and USAA are both around the same size, but USAA only serves members of the armed forces.

Those that either don’t qualify or prefer going through an agent for their insurance needs should consider Farmers.

Services Offered

USAA and Farmers offer car insurance

Both Farmers and USAA offer coverage for liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured or underinsured motorist, and renters insurance.

Both also offer additional types of insurance and services, which may tip the scales for those hoping to bundle their products with one company.

The good and bad about USAA car insurance

Free accident forgiveness. USAA won’t raise your premiums if you get in an accident after five years of safe driving, a feature highlighted by Adam Luehrs of DoughRoller.

Most insurance companies charge for accident forgiveness services like this, but with USAA it’s free in many states.

However, you may still have to pay for it depending on where you live.

What country has the most road deaths?

Wide range of services. You can get car insurance, a mortgage, and checking account all with one company by going with USAA.

Keeping everything under one roof can simplify managing these services.

Select availability. You can only get these products if you’re a military member, spouse, or child, as noted by Lauren Barret of Money Under 30.

That cuts the company off from a lot of people.

The good and bad about Farmers car insurance

Not just Farmers. Even if Farmers doesn’t offer the coverage you need, one of its subsidiaries might.

Packing multiple companies into one can open up your options for finding auto insurance, according to Eric Stauffer of Expert Insurance Reviews.

Not as many extra services. While Farmers does offer life, home, and renters insurance, it doesn’t provide many of the additional services offered by USAA.

The takeaway

Both Farmers and USAA offer all the types of car insurance coverage expected of a large insurer, but USAA goes the extra mile by providing additional services.

Discounts

USAA and Farmers offer discounts that lower your premiums

Both USAA and Farmers offer a range of discounts that can make your car insurance more affordable.

The good and bad about USAA car insurance discounts

Many ways to save. USAA offers 12 different discounts for slashing your premiums. These include:

  • Safe driver discount for maintaining a good driving record for more than five years
  • Defensive driver discount for taking an approved defensive driving course
  • Driver training discount for drivers under 21 that complete a basic driver training course
  • Good student discount for college or high school students that get good grades
  • New vehicle discount for cars less than three years old
  • Multi-vehicle discount for adding additional vehicles onto your policy
  • Annual mileage discount for infrequent drivers
  • Vehicle storage discount
  • Family discount for members whose parents had a policy with USAA
  • Insurance bundling discount for adding home, life, or renter’s insurance
  • Length of membership discount for members who stay with USAA
  • Military installation discount of 15% off comprehensive coverage for garaging your vehicle on base

Non-military members save less. Retired, honorably discharged, or active duty members lose out on the military institution discount if they don’t live on base.

The good and bad about Farmers car insurance discounts

Premium-lowering discounts. Farmers offers a few different ways of saving on your car insurance:

  • Distant student discount for parents of students away at school
  • Homeowners discount if you own your own home.
  • Mature driver discount for seniors

senior drivers' accident rates

  • Safety discounts for cars with anti-lock brakes and seatbelts
  • Bundle discounts for also getting home or other types of insurance through Farmers
  • Safe driver discount for keeping a clean driving record
  • Good student discount for high school or college students getting good grades
  • Multiple vehicle discounts for adding additional vehicles onto your policy
  • Electronic funds transfer discount for setting up automatic payments
  • Paid in full discount for paying off your policy upfront

Fewer than USAA. While Farmers offers ten different discounts, USAA provides 12 ways of saving.

The takeaway

Both companies offer a good range of discounts, but USAA comes out ahead with more price-lowering opportunities.

Benefits

USAA and Farmers offer more than just auto insurance

Drivers can save some money on more than just car insurance with these benefits offered by USAA and Farmers.

The good and the bad about USAA’s price-cutting partnerships

Save on and off the road. USAA members get discounts on all kinds of things through USAA’s partnerships with other companies.

That means you can save on rental cars, home security services, or even your TurboTax subscription just for insuring your car with USAA.

A little too exclusive. Once again, only military members or their spouses and children can take advantage of these benefits.

The good and the bad about Farmers credit card

Great credit card for members. Farmers lets its members save on insurance with its Farmers Rewards Visa.

This credit card earns points redeemable for cash, travel, gift cards, and merchandise.

You earn three points worth $0.01 for every dollar you spend on Farmers products, gas, or home improvement.

That means, if over the course of a month you used your car to pay off a $250 monthly car insurance bill for 750 points, $60 in gas for 180 points, and a $500 home renovation project for 1,500 points, you would have earned 2,430 points worth $243.

USAA also offers a card. Farmers has some competition here. USAA also offers its own Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature that earns 1.5% cash back on every purchase you make, which could earn you more money back depending on your spending habits.

The takeaway

Both companies offer a pretty good credit card for members, but Farmers can’t match USAA’s additional benefits.

Costs & Fees

USAA and Farmers differ in cost depending on where you live

Getting a true comparison of premiums between USAA and Farmers is difficult, as premiums will differ state to state.

However, you can still see some general differences in what these companies charge.

The good and bad about USAA’s premiums

Competitive rates. USAA offers good rates for its car insurance in general, according to Finder.com. Its discounts and Subscriber Savings Accounts also cut rates even further.

Getting the lowest premiums takes time. USAA’s length of membership discount means that you won’t receive the lowest possible premiums right away, according to Rick Mikolasek of The Truth About Auto Insurance.

The good and the bad about Farmers’ premiums

They’re expensive. Insurance from Farmers isn’t cheap. Its rates can be up to $400 more than the average insurer, according to Credio.com.

Paying for agents. Remember, these higher rates happen because Farmers keeps insurance agents on the payroll.

The higher premiums pay for your one-on-one interactions with an agent who actually knows your name, which may be worth it for some people.

Salary of insurance agents

The takeaway

USAA is cheaper in most cases, but Farmers’ higher rates may be worth it for those that value having an agent at the ready.

Customer Service

USAA has better customer service rankings, but Farmers offers a more human approach

While Farmers relies on its agents for delivering customer service, USAA relies on helping people over the phone and online.

The good and the bad about USAA’s customer service

Stellar rankings. USAA outclassed every insurer in every region in the 2017 U.S. Auto Insurance Study performed by J.D. Power.

The company is literally second to none.

A bit impersonal. Your only route for filing claims or other interaction with USAA is over the phone.

The company doesn’t provide any agents or brick-and-mortar locations.

The good and bad about Farmers’ customer service

About average. Farmers’ customer service ranked somewhere between average and below average in the previously mentioned J.D. Power survey.

That’s far below what USAA offers.

You get an agent. Unlike USAA, Farmers does provide several physical locations.

You can visit these to have an agent answer questions about your policy or otherwise provide face-to-face customer service.

The takeaway

Even though USAA doesn’t use agents, its customer service far outranks Farmers.

Key Digital Services

Farmers and USAA both offer apps and websites

Like most large insurers, Farmers and USAA provide apps and websites where you can get a quote, pay your bill, file or check on the status of a claim, and contact roadside assistance.

There are also a few unique programs that make each digital service stand out.

The good and the bad about USAA’s Automatic License+

Great for teen drivers. USAA’s Automatic License+ program helps parents instill safe driving skills in their young drivers.

How the program works. Participants receive a device that plugs into their car’s diagnostic port and access to the Coach’s Dashboard to monitor their teen’s driving habits.

Do teens admit to drinking and driving in your state?

Additionally, the Automatic License+ device emits a sound if the driver speeds, brakes too hard, or accelerates too quickly to provide real-time feedback for the driver.

Luckily for most parents, none of the information this program collects can be used to raise or lower premiums.

Pretty good app. The USAA app available on Google Play and iTunes works pretty well, with 4.5 stars out of 5 on each site.

Clunky website. While most websites provide an easy-to-find link for filing a claim on their homepage, USAA’s website only lets you file a claim once you’ve logged in to your account.

This can make it difficult to locate, especially if you’re stressed out after a car accident or collision.

The good and the bad about Farmers’ Signal

An app that lowers your insurance.Signal is Farmers’ usage-based insurance program.

It uses an app to track your driving habits for things like heavy braking, sudden acceleration, or texting and driving.

While the program can get safe drivers a discount, the information Signal collects won’t be used for raising your rates.

Right now the program is only available in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, and Montana.

Still working out the kinks. User reviews for the Signal app on Google Play and iTunes report that the app sometimes collects information even when they’re out of the car.

That means you could answer a text message while walking along, and Signal might record it as if you were texting and driving.

An alright app. Apart from Signal, Farmers also offers a standard app for managing your car insurance. It currently has 3.5 stars on Google Play and 4.5 on iTunes.

Normal website. You can visit Farmers’ website to file a claim, find an agent, and access other features.

The takeaway

Both insurers provide the standard website and app features expected of a large insurer.

Farmers also offers some great features for drivers interested in lowering their rates using usage-based insurance, while USAA provides some useful tools for teen drivers and their parents.
