Winter Garden Grand Opening

The five Salgado brothers grew up in Mexico spending family time gathered in the kitchen with their mother and grandmother. They didn’t know it then, but that time spent together helping and learning prepared them for their culinary future and the opening of five, almost six, authentic Mexican restaurants in Orlando, Florida.




The Winter Garden location is the fifth of the San Jose’s Original Mexican restaurants, all named after the brothers’ dad.

Waves of immigration from the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America and Southeast Asia have left an indelible mark on the region’s culture, as I saw when I embarked on taco crawls through Redwood City; sampled snacks from all the chaat trucks I could find in Sunnyvale; and drank bowl after bowl of hot chicken soup in San Jose’s Vietnam Town. I wish there was another me who could devote her life to this part of the Bay Area, but until then, I’ll remain a frequent visitor. So far, these are my favorite spots.

Duc Huong

A homegrown banh mi chain sets the standard for Bay Area Vietnamese delis.

All of Duc Huong’s locations bustle with energy as sandwich lovers queue up to buy bagfuls of banh mi stuffed with Vietnamese cold cuts and pickles. The shop’s “buy four, get one free” deal on sandwiches is a massive steal that has nourished many hungry students and families in the area. Each type of sandwich is available in two sizes. Get the #2 combination ($3/$6), dac biet, which shows off classic Vietnamese charcuterie: chewy headcheese, bologna-like cha lua and ham with a rough pate and mayonnaise. People also come for the many prepared deli items available: steamed buns with peppery ground pork ($3), pastries and desserts.

This luxurious seasonal Indian restaurant in Palo Alto is made for the spotlight.

Opened in early 2020 with big ambitions, Ettan is chic and elegant, with an ample 6,000-square-foot dining room that almost feels like a relic of another time. The multilevel space, decorated with indigo tiles, a glass dome and complete with an enclosed patio, is primed to be a new dining hot spot in Palo Alto. The Cal-Indian menu, overseen by Campton Place chef Srijith Gopinathan, enhances seasonal ingredients with the chef’s expert grasp on spice- and coconut-heavy coastal Keralan cuisine. Small plate-size items are fun: The mix-to-order Ettan salad ($15) with seasonal produce, puffed rice and other crunchy bits reads like a take on the Burmese tea leaf salad but with a unique and tangy fermented curry leaf chutney serving as the center. From the main side, a buttery daal makhani ($24) is made even tastier with the use of earthy and rich black lentils. Chef’s specials, like roasted lamb rack ($47) with nutty coconut quinoa and tomato mexican restaurant downtown san jose, are always worth taking a look at as well.

A spunky pop-up breathes new life into the South Bay's already excellent Vietnamese food scene.

Every Sunday and Wednesday, couple and business partners DuyAn and Hieu Le command a San Jose street corner with their pop-up, Hết Sẩy. The home cooks-turned-entrepreneurs offer sweet-and-salty air-dried sausages ($25) made with homemade wine; fermented fish sauces; and chile oils ($9) made from scratch, serving the ingredients in their take on southern Vietnamese cuisine. The menu changes from week to week, but the food is always personal. One week, Hieu served a version of his mother's Vietnamese-style spaghetti, the sauce seasoned with fish sauce and red vinegar. In December, DuyAn featured her take on her hometown's chicken-centered hu tieu, mixed with chicken skin, creamy liver and rice noodles. Regardless of what's on the menu, you'll likely learn something new every time about what Vietnamese food can be.

La Casita Chilanga

Rib-sticking tortas are the MO of this soccer-theme sandwich shop.

With locations in Redwood City, San Jose and San Mateo, La Casita Chilanga is one of the essential lunch spots of the Peninsula and South Bay. The mini-chain offers more than 20 types of tortas, all of them massive and built with crusty, French-style Mexican telera bread. The tortas’ outsides are crosshatched with grill marks, and the insides are packed with tomato, soft queso fresco, refried beans, caramelized onion, avocado and chipotle sauce. Those components alone would constitute an excellent sandwich, but there’s more — much more. The Cubana ($11.95), a take on the classic Mexico City sandwich, includes crunchy breaded steak, ham, pork leg meat, super-savory chorizo mexican restaurant downtown san jose turkey sausage. My favorite is the Hawaiiana ($9.95), a relatively simple but iconic combination of ham, gooey melted Monterey Jack cheese and caramelized pineapple. Inside seating is sparse, so most opt for takeout or delivery.

A combination grocery store and taqueria that’s one of South San Francisco’s best-kept secrets.

When Eduardo Haro and Humberto Campos opened La Tapatia in downtown South San Francisco in mexican restaurant downtown san jose, the store was a rare source for freshly made tortillas and Mexican specialty groceries. Prepared daily are trays of moist and crispy carnitas, tamales, ribs and fresh masa by the pound. Luna Mexican Kitchen

Farm-to-table, healthful Mexican restaurant goes heavy on vegetables and scratch-made components.

At Luna (an acronym for Local, Unrefined, Natural, Authentic), chef, owner and San Jose native Jo Lerma-Lopez and her team really do it all. They nixtamalize corn in-house every day before they transform it into masa for fresh tortillas. They make the salsas, chorizo and cashew crema from scratch. This Californian-Mexican restaurant is also exceedingly accommodating to all diets, which makes it popular among vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free folks. Although it sounds like mostly health food, the menu does have a wild side: Check out the deluxe mixed grill ($92-$275), a smoky and extravagant tower of lobster tails, ribs, carnitas, sausage and much more, made for sharing and accompanied by numerous side dishes. Luna is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner at both of its South Bay locations.

New Haven pizza heaven in San Carlos.

The charred and minimalist pizza of New Haven, Conn., is a rarity in the Bay Area, but longtime restaurateur and New Haven native Andy Gambardella has eagerly filled that gap with Pazzo. Opened in San Carlos in 2014, the wood-fired pizzeria nails what makes the New Haven pizza so special: an extra-toasty crust with a thin and chewy texture, imperfectly shaped and irregularly cut in the traditional style. Start with the cheese-less San Marzano pie ($15), with a crushed tomato sauce and bright sprinkles of oregano on top, to get the quintessential New Haven experience. While Gambardella takes the craft of pizza-making seriously, Pazzo is a family-friendly restaurant where servers won’t bat an eye at special requests for the kiddos.

Phở Gà Nhà

Free-range chicken is the modus operandi of this lively family-owned restaurant, which the Tran family has been operating in Vietnam Town since 2014. The best dish to start with is the chicken rice plate, or cơm gà rô ti ($14.25). A quarter of crisp-skinned and moist rotisserie chicken is served alongside a heap of tomato-flavored rice, a bubbly sunny-side up egg, salad and a chile sauce for dipping. A single bite of silky egg yolk, roasted chicken skin and rice is packed with complementary textures and flavor notes. Although just the plate is enough to fill your belly, you'll also receive a small side of chicken soup with a refreshing garnish of cilantro and green onion.

Sogo Tofu

A family-run tofu shop doubles as a source of flavorful Taiwanese vegetarian takeaway food.

Great Taiwanese food is hard to find in the Bay Area, but Sogo’s selection of vegetarian and vegan specialties is a reliable source. Highlights include ultra-soft bao filled with spinach, hearty fan tuan (sticky rice mexican restaurant downtown san jose, $3.99-$5.49) filled with fried crullers and vegan “pork” floss, and a wide variety of steam-table dishes that you can buy as a bento set ($12). Palo Alto's popular steak house has a classic charm.

Sundance exudes a steadiness that speaks to its status as an elder statesman in the restaurant churches in gate city va. The toothsome slow-roasted prime rib ($29.95/$39.50) is a best-seller — one that you'll likely see on every table if you dine on the restaurant's patio. Each of the steaks is served a la carte, and the side dish menu is impressive in itself: You've got the loaded baked potato ($6.95), an all-time steak house MVP; sweet, organic tomatoes with balsamic reduction ($4.50); and an excellent wild rice pilaf ($4.95), which gets an earthy, forestlike aroma from fresh thyme and mushrooms.

Sushi Sam's Edomata

Sam's is popular for both its generous portions and its house-made Japanese desserts.

The lengthy queue for Sushi Sam's is a common sight in downtown San Mateo; diners arrive in droves for its monster-size cuts of fish and affable service. Even with a lengthy menu of Western-style rolls, grilled and fried snacks, noodles and soups, the major draw has always been the eight-piece omakase (market price). The omakase's Western-style dessert course is often a highlight: A pear tart or the creamy and earthy mexican restaurant downtown san jose tiramisu are a wonderfully indulgent way to conclude a meal. Some of the best Edomae-style sushi in the region can be found in this hushed, nine-seat room in San Mateo.

San Mateo's most intimate sushi bar is now open after a long period of offering its superior sushi for takeout-only. Chef Akira Yoshizumi regularly imports his fish and seafood direct from Tokyo's Toyosu fish market, creating an exceptional Edomae-style omakase service ($250). The chef relies on a variety of curing, aging and marinating techniques to pull the best flavors and textures out of already high-quality ingredients like seasonal firefly squid, oily gizzard shad and creamy monkfish liver. The intensity of the meal tends to keep the dining room quiet, as diners contemplate their bites.

Taqueria San Bruno

Fish tacos are an ideal first taste of the Bay Area after landing at SFO.

At this bright green taqueria on a quiet street just off Interstate 380, Mexican food lovers swarm for tacos ($3.75) and burritos ($10.95) filled with smoky grilled shrimp and blackened carne asada. Burritos are massive and filled with flavorful rice and beans in the Mission style — not too much, and not too mushy, thankfully. They could easily be split into two meals. The interior, which is not yet open for indoor dining, is covered with bright murals of Mexican rural landscapes, as well as a framed portrait of St louis credit union on forest park Simpson dressed as Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. The staff here provide exceptionally warm service, even during stressful peak times. The restaurant is takeout-only.

Thiên Long

Mouthwatering chả cá lã vọng, or turmeric-marinated fish, is the highlight of this cash-only Vietnamese strip mall spot that epitomizes San Jose's vibrant food scene.

Opened in 2006 by the Quan family, Thiên Long is a true mom-and-pop shop that is a favorite of many Vietnamese families in San Jose. As you sit, you’re always hearing the snap and sizzle of turmeric-stained fish dancing on tabletop grills all around you. Chả cá lã vọng ($27.95), the restaurant's standout turmeric and dill fish feast, comes with everything you need to set up a summer roll factory at your table: rice paper, fresh shiso and lettuce, bouncy rice vermicelli noodles and fermented shrimp sauce. Thiên Long also serves a few dishes that are rarities in Bay Area Vietnamese restaurants, like the bánh bột chiên trứng mexican restaurant downtown san jose, a grid of rice cakes seared until crunchy and fluffy on the inside, and then encased in a sheet of fried egg.

Our Story

Oaxacan food is one of Mexico’s most celebrated and complex cuisines. Mezcal Owner and Oaxacan native Adolfo Gomez moved to San Jose from Oaxaca, Mexico, 20 years ago. Gomez served as the Operations Manager at the Silicon Valley Capital Club restaurant for 10 years and also worked on opening Mezcal for five years. Longing for Oaxacan food and the tastes of home, Gomez’s vision of Mezcal Restaurant was realized in November 2008 and was voted one of the “2009 Best New Restaurants” by Metro Newspaper. Bringing the rich flavors of Oaxaca to San Jose, Mezcal Restaurant specializes in three Oaxacan moles (sauces) – Estofado, Coloradito and Mole Negro – all family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. For the more adventurous food-lover Mezcal also serves chapulines (fried grasshoppers) a common and delicious snack found throughout Oaxaca. Whatever your palate may be, Mezcal strives to satisfy each of its customers with its traditional, fresh and authentic cuisine.


In Oaxaca, the Tlayuda is as ubiquitous as the Mole sauces. Made with a large toasted tortilla, it’s loaded with intense and savory regional flavors. Top your Tlayuda with the protein of your choice beef, pork, chorizo or chicken.

Bar Comal, the new Mexican-themed spot in the Adams Point neighborhood of Oakland, is officially open after an 18-month delay due to the pandemic. The full-service restaurant and bar from the team behind Berkeley’s Comal is adjacent to Comal Next Door, which opened in June 2020 for taqueria eats including bowls and burritos.

Located across the street from the northeastern tip of Lake Merritt and down the street from the Grand Lake Theatre, the 50-seat Bar Comal (with another 14 seats outside) has a full dinner menu by executive chef Gandin, including his famous fish tacos, platillos (dinner plates with rice, beans and tortillas), shareable bar snacks mexican restaurant downtown san jose nachos, and signature dishes like wild shrimp ceviche in aguachile verde and grilled elote.
