As we prepare for the additional demands that the COVID-19 outbreak will place on our hospital system, our operational leaders need up-to-date projections of what additional resources will be required. Informed estimates of how many patients will need hospitalization, ICU beds, and mechanical ventilation over the coming days and weeks will be crucial inputs to readiness responses and mitigation strategies.

To this end, the Predictive Healthcare team at Penn Medicine has developed a tool that leverages SIR modeling to assist hospitals with capacity planning around COVID-19.

Introducing CHIME: The COVID-19 Hospital Impact Model for Epidemics.

CHIME

CHIME allows hospitals to enter information about their population and modify assumptions around the spread and behavior of COVID-19. It then runs a standard SIR model to project the number of new hospital admissions each day, along with the daily hospital census. These projections can then be used to create best- and worst-case scenarios to assist with capacity planning. We’re announcing today that we’re open-sourcing CHIME and making it available to the healthcare community.

While the default parameters are customized and continually updated to reflect the situation at Penn Medicine, CHIME can be adapted for use by any hospital system by modifying parameters to reflect local contexts.

The most impactful parameter in a SIR model is the Doubling Time. This parameter defines how rapidly a disease spreads. Experiences in other geographical contexts suggest that doubling time may range from 3 to 13 days or more, with notable examples:

This value is particularly important because of the exponential nature of the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. This is also why public health officials recommend measures like social distancing and hand washing: the more we can slow down the spread of COVID-19, the lower the peak demand on our healthcare system. Try out our live version of CHIME and see what happens when you modify the Doubling Time parameter. You can also experiment with scenarios involving different levels of incidence severity and average lengths of stay for each severity class.

We’ve put effort into determining good estimates for all model parameters and have set default values accordingly. Some of the default values are based on the current situation in our home region of Philadelphia. If you’re working somewhere outside of the Philadelphia region you can simply modify the following parameters to suit your patient population:

  • Currently Known Regional Infections
  • Currently Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients
  • Hospital Market Share (%)

As local spread progresses, revised estimates can be made for some of the values in CHIME. We will try our best to keep things up to date with the latest research, but if you find an issue with any of the values we are using we’d appreciate your feedback and contributions. We also set up a Slack channel if you’d like to chat with us.

I LOVE this Bank!!

I have been with Chime for quite some time now and let me tell ya, when I say they are chime app down. THEY ARE AMAZING!! I was with a Credit Union for a little while and they told me I was set up with an account that I couldn’t over draft in. yet every payday I was magically some odd amount in the negative. It NEVER failed! Then, I decided to give Chime a chance and see what happened. NOT ONLY do they not charge fees but they have this really cool setting that makes it SUPER easy to
save called “Round Up” and basically what that does is every time you add money to your account it saves a percentage of that amount. Which is BEYOND helpful. It does the same when you spend money as well, except, it rounds up to the next dollar amount I believe. Their customer support via Phone/Email is FANTASTIC! The workers are so sweet and helpful and anytime I’ve had to call they fixed what ever I needed! I’ve only had to call them twice and neither were to complain but to figure out something or get an answer to a question I didn’t know.

I’m not gonna lie, at first I thought it was a scam, or just another ad on FB. but I am honestly SO happy that I switched. If it wasn’t for them my taxes would’ve already been fully spent and most of it in fees 😂 I HIGHLY recommend dumping your physical bank and joining Chime. It’s worth it. I PROMISE!!

What’s the catch?

There isn’t one. When I first heard of chime I thought it was too good to be true, no overdraft fees, building your credit without having to remember there’s a bill at the end of the month (you have to turn safe credit building on). I’ve lived on my own since I was 16 and when I tried renting apartments at 18, I discovered my lack of credit history was a big issue. Within a few months I got my first credit score, the card they issue essentially works like a debit card. It’s a credit builder card therefore, I have a perfect payment history, a score of first 678, then 680, and 704 as of right now. They also have other resources for a select few insurance companies, investment chime app down, cash back savings apps etc. There is no overdraft fee, though it is possible to overdraft but not over the spot me limit you’re allowed. If you’re not one that likes over drafting anyway, I’d turn “spot me” off. That way whatever purchase that’s over your available spending balance will be declined. And the best part about online banking is that you can disable your cards anytime you want to avoid unauthorized transactions. Also there is a $100 bonus for you and each person you refer that signs up and gets $200+ direct deposited within the first 45 days of creating the account I believe.

amazing if you live paycheck to paycheck

i switched to chime because simple bank became bbva. getting my paycheck a couple days early and not being able to overdraft were what drew me. the credit builder account was a surprise to me and i love it. i have poor credit and this is such an easy way to build credit.

the BEST part of the app for me though is that when i get paid it direct deposits to my credit builder account and i have all my bills taken out of that. so when i get paid i look at what will need to be paid that paycheck and i put fun money in my spending account. it’s a lifesaver if you’re prone to dip into bill money. if you overdraft on your spending account, spot me will cover it up to $20 off the bat (tried and true, my friends), and it WILL NOT pull from credit builder or savings. because i live paycheck to paycheck i don’t really have a savings account, but i do use their round-up feature. you’ll be surprised how quickly you save with it. it’s really helping me get my financial situation together.

it can be really hard to find a bank or budgeting app that works well for people who live paycheck to paycheck (makes me feel so dumb alliance association bank com i can’t budget for a whole month), but CHIME IS IT FOR ME. Seriously, give them a chance. Customer service is great, too.

Chime, one of the hottest digital banks taking on Wall Street, faced outages that could see it lose customers. It highlights how competitive digital banking has become.

  • Chime, a startup digital bank, experienced service outages beginning Wednesday afternoon that locked customers out of their accounts.
  • The issues with the challenger bank, which reportedly has over 5 million customers, were still being worked on by Friday morning.
  • Angry Chime customers took to Twitter, threatening to pull money once the app and website were back online and move to traditional banks such as JPMorgan Chase, or Wells Fargo.
  • "This is definitely going to make me reconsider using my Chime account," one Chime user told Business Insider.

One of the fastest-growing digital banks is having growing pains.

Challenger bank Chime experienced outages starting Wednesday afternoon and lasting until Thursday night that left customers unable to access their accounts. Additionally, customers couldn't withdraw cash from ATMs, use their Chime debit cards cards, and card transactions were being declined.

By Thursday afternoon ATM and debit card access was restored, however its app and website remained inaccessible into Friday morning. That meant customers couldn't transfer funds or check their balances.

The bank, which has over 5 million customers and is reportedly eyeing a $5 billion valuation for its next fundraise, spent much of Wednesday and into Thursday working through the outage. At one point on Thursday morning, the bank temporarily disabled debit card transactions and cash withdrawals for a brief period in an effort to get the system back online.

"The outage stemmed from an issue with our gateway processing partner," Chime CEO and founder Chris Britt told Business Insider in emailed comments. "We're heads down today working to take care of our members," Britt said. "We feel like we let our members down and are focused on making things right."

Chime customers took to Twitter complaining about the outages and seeking updates from the company. Some users said that they may ditch Chime and return to traditional banks such as Well Fargo or JPMorgan.

To be clear, the traditional banks aren't immune to these issues either. Wells Fargo experienced its own outage in February.

Still, that hasn't stopped Chime customers from questioning the bank.

"This is the last thing that's ever supposed to happen at a bank. Customers can't access their money, that's ridiculous," Chime customer Jason Cousineau told Business Insider. "This is definitely going to make me reconsider using my Chime account."

Cousineau has banked with Chime for eight months. He first noticed issues when he was unable to log into the Chime app around 8:00pm on Wednesday. Though he has a checking account with a credit union, Cousineau prefers to use Chime because its technology is more user-friendly.

"It's like you have to pick and choose whether you want a reliable brick and mortar bank without as many new technologies, or if you want the online bank account, which is not obviously reliable," Cousineau said.

One Chime user started a Change.org petition calling for the company to compensate for damages incurred during the outage that already has over 1,800 signatures. On Twitter, there were complaints of customers being stranded at restaurants unable to pay or unable to buy gas for their morning commutes to work.

It's not just traditional banks Chime has to compete with. VC funding for challenger banks has already reached $2.5 billion, breaking last year's record. The space is a crowded one as in addition to US-based Chime and Varo, European neobanksMonzo, N26, and Revolut have all begun expansion in the US.

Are you a Chime Bank member and want to use Cash App but aren’t sure if you can or exactly how to link your account with Cash App?

Then you’re in luck and we’ve got you covered.

Cash App launched in October of 2013 and as of 2020, it has had over 100 million downloads and over 36 million monthly active users (1). It is extremely popular, especially with younger Millenials.

Considering the overwhelming popularity of both Cash App and Chime, it’s only logical for you to want to use your Chime account with Cash App to send and receive money or even to invest in stocks and crypto.

It’s important, however, for you to ensure that everything is set up and linked properly to help you avoid any potential issues and/or loss of money when using your Chime account with Cash App.

There are two ways you can link your Chime account with Cash App. We will cover both and explain a couple of the pros and cons of using each.

In This Post:

Can Chime receive money from Cash App?

Yes, Chime can receive money from Cash App. People using Cash App can send money to anyone who has a properly set up and linked bank account including people who use Chime.

You can also send money to Chime from your own Cash App (for example if you’re investing and turning a profit). The process of transferring funds from Cash App to your own bank is known as “cashing out”. (3)

How to Send and Receive Money Using Cash App

  • To send money using Cash App, open the app and tap the “send” icon. Enter the amount you want to send, then type in your recipient’s name or email address.
  • To receive money using Cash App, open the app and tap the “receive” icon. Enter your bank or PayPal account information to receive funds from anyone who sends you money on the Cash App.

How to Link Chime to Cash App With Your Debit Card (Step-By-Step)

You can link your Chime debit card with Cash App which will allow you to access the ability to use instant transfers. However, keep in mind that there is a 1.5% fee associated with these transactions.

If you’d rather not pay these fees, you can also directly link to your Chime Bank account. We show you exactly how below.

To link to your Chime debit card for use with Cash App:

1) Install and Open Cash App

First, you need to install Cash App on your preferred device if you haven’t done so already. You can do so for free on Android and iOS devices. Once you have Cash App installed on your preferred device, open it to continue linking it to your Chime account.

2) Click on the Bank Icon in the Bottom Left Corner

Once you have Cash App open, simply click on the bank icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.

3) Click on “Link Bank”

You may have to scroll down to near the bottom of the screen and you should see a “Link Bank” button. Click on it to start linking Cash App to Chime.

4) Enter your Chime Bank debit card number and information

Enter your full Chime debit card number and then click on “Add Card” in the bottom right corner. Then you will be prompted to enter your CVV number, card expiration date, and zip code associated with the card.

Assuming everything is correct, you should get a confirmation message in Cash App saying that the card has been linked to correctly.

How to Link Cash App Directly to Your Chime Bank Account (Step-By-Step)

Linking Chime to your Cash App using your bank account is a very similar process to using your debit card and is equally as straightforward.

Linking your Chime Bank account with Cash App this way allows you to avoid transaction fees. However, you won’t be able to instantly transfer money this way. Instead transferring money will take up to 1 to 3 business days.

Another benefit of linking Cash App directly with your Chime Bank account is if you lose your Chime debit card and need to get it replaced or if it expires, your debit card number may change and that will cause potential issues with using Cash App until that information is updated. Directly linking to your Chime account you don’t need to worry about any of that.

1) Install and Open Cash App

Install Cash App on your preferred device if you haven’t done so already. You can do so for free on Android and iOS devices. Once you have Cash App installed, open it to continue linking it to your Chime account.

4) Link Cash App Directly to Your Chime Bank Account

To link Cash App directly to your Chime Bank account, click on “no card”.

Read the following screen and then click “Continue”. Then either scroll or search until you find “Chime” and click on it.

5) Login to Your Chime Account to Link it With Cash App

Finally, log in to your Chime account with your Chime username and password to finish linking it with Cash App.

The Easiest Way to Ensure Chime and Cash App are Linked Properly

Even though it may be tempting to skip doing this, it’s highly recommended that you test things to ensure Chime and Cash App are properly linked together.

The easiest way to do this is to send a small amount of money (like $1) from Chime to Cash App. Once the transfer is complete, try sending it back to your Chime account from Cash App. If everything transfers over as expected, then you should be good to go.
