    There’s nothing like a heavy night on the booze to make you contemplate not drinking alcohol again. Especially when you’ve (foolishly) forgone your options to prevent a hangover and are feeling tired, groggy, and experiencing the less-than-appealing after effects of alcohol on the skin. 

    That being said, a hangover doesn’t mean you have to stay in bed all day. With these health experts sharing the all-important hangover cures that actually work.

    Hydration

    This is one of the most famous hangover cures for a reason as it really does help.

    “Alcohol is a diuretic,” Dr Ross Perry, medical director at Cosmedics, explains. “This means it increases the amount of urine a person passes and the loss of fluid causes you to feel dehydrated and therefore you want to knock back plenty of water to feel hydrated again.” 

    But it won’t take away the headache or feeling sick in the morning, he says, it “may lessen the symptoms of a hangover” like thirst and dry mouth. 

    Replenishing lost nutrients

    There’s a whole host of foods that cure hangovers – and that’s thanks to their inner nutritional goodness.

    A solid dose of nutrients will help to restore you after the effects of alcohol have taken place, as you’re replenishing the electrolytes you lost through drinking. 

    “It’s widely known that drinking alcohol blocks the production of a hormone that helps your body hold on to water, therefore leading to dehydration and the loss of electrolytes like potassium and sodium,” Dr Ross Perry says. 

    “Eating foods containing potassium such as bananas, oranges, apricots, grapefruit, honeydew and cantaloupe melon, leafy greens, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, mushroom and peas will help to lessen the hangover and replenish the loss of electrolytes making you feel better quicker.”

    Red ginseng

    While it’s not something we expect many people to have in the back of their kitchen cupboard, it’s worth noting for the next time a hangover hits. 

    Red ginseng is a powerful antioxidant, explains Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy. In one study from 2014, two groups were randomly assigned to drink either red ginseng after 100ml of whiskey or 100ml of water. The results showed that the blood alcohol concentration level was significantly lower in the red ginseng group than in the other. 

    “There was also a positive effect on hangover symptoms in the RGD group.” Dr Lee says, “For the body to metabolise alcohol, requires much in the way of oxidation. As a result of oxidation, many dangerous ‘free radicals’ are produced. These are electrically charged molecules that have the potential to damage DNA. One of the reasons red ginseng may be effective as a hangover remedy, is that it acts as a powerful antioxidant, and neutralises free radicals.”

    Ditch the coffee

    This is something to avoid, rather than a cure, as it’s a classic urban myth for getting rid of a hangover. TV has made it look like this is the number one way to cure a hangover but this is not actually the case.

    “Coffee is a popular remedy to sober up and give energy after drinking, but it can contribute to dehydration.” Nutritionist Shona Wilkinson warns, as it’s a diuretic much like alcohol itself. “And avoid smoking, as the chemicals in cigarettes can increase feelings of nausea.” 

    Instead, if you want a hit of energy, opt for a sports drink like Lucozade or Gatorade which will restore electrolytes while keeping you awake with sugar. 

    Apple cider vinegar

    This cure-all remedy supposedly works for everything, but Dr Ross Perry assures us it’s a winner for a hangover. 

    “Apple cider vinegar can help to restore your body’s PH level which becomes more acidic after drinking alcohol.” He explains, “And therefore helps to bring your PH back to a more normal level.”

    And while it does have a somewhat diuretic effect, it “can help with morning after fluid retention and is great at restoring blood sugars. These sugars can be lost after a night out drinking, which leaves you tired and lethargic.”

    Have a better breakfast

    A big fry up always seems like the best thing when you’re hungover. But it can actually make you feel worse – very quickly.

    “The reality is that a fry up or a takeaway  is often quite greasy and won’t absorb the alcohol.” Dr Perry says, “The overall effect can actually lead to a bit of an icky tummy, which we often associate with the alcohol but actually may be a combination of the food and alcohol combined.”

    Instead, go for a breakfast of poached eggs with roasted tomatoes and wholemeal toast, suggests medical nutritionist Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart. “Eggs contain the amino acid cysteine, which can help to break down acetaldehyde [an element of alcohol that contributes to a hangover].

    “If you can’t handle that, then pick a banana. Bananas contain potassium, a mineral that is lost when you drink alcohol and contributes to symptoms of dehydration.”

    Get some fresh air

    If you’re feeling tired or really hanging, the idea of leaving the house isn’t going to be a pleasant one. But, according to Dr Perry, “getting fresh air is in theory a good idea following a hangover but I’d suggest going for a walk rather than just sitting down and breathing in fresh air.”

    He suggests, “Keep it gentle as alcohol is a diuretic meaning that the following morning [after drinking], your body is dehydrated. Hitting the gym hard and sweating lots isn’t advised as you can end up losing even more fluids.

    “By taking a gentle walk it will help maintain blood flow through the body which is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. 

    “Of course, just getting some fresh air is a good idea as the more oxygen you breathe in will help to start to flush out those nasty toxins from the night before and make you feel less tired and having a peaceful environment i.e.- not talking to anyone – will possibly help lessen – rather than ‘get rid’ – of a headache too.”

    CBD

    The CBD surge has well and truly taken over but it’s normally something we associate with natural anxiety remedies and skincare. 

    Turns out, it’s great for a hangover too. “CBD reduces headaches and migraines by integrating with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Alcohol use throws the ECS out of balance, and CBD can help it restore its balance.” Nutritional therapist and eating psychology coach, Claudia le Feuvre, says.

    “Nausea and vomiting are the hallmarks of a bad hangover. CBD is an anti-emetic, via its interaction with serotonin receptors. It can help reduce feelings of nausea, and the vomiting response as well. 

    “Anxiety and depression are also side effects of a hangover. As the brain attempts to re-establish equilibrium, its neurotransmitters are still seeking balance. CBD helps to balance the brains messengers (neurotransmitters), and therefore the mental instability on the back of a hangover.”

    How do you cure a hangover fast?

    There are a couple of things you can do to improve your chances of feeling better.

    • Drink something with electrolytes added in, such as Lucozade 
    • Eat a good breakfast, packed with protein and vitamin C
    • Go for a gentle walk to get some fresh air
    • Take Ibuprofen to minimise swelling and reduce headaches 
    • Have a nap, only for 20-40 minutes though

    These are all proven methods for easing the symptoms of a hangover. Unfortunately, it’s not really possible to entirely cure one. 

    “In past, research into a range of possible hangover cures has concluded that the existing treatment options have only minimal effectiveness, in relieving certain specific hangover symptoms.” Dr Deborah Lee tells us, “Sadly, however, none of the hangover cures investigated, improved the full range of hangover symptoms.

    How long does a hangover last?

    While it depends person to person, the standard hangover can last up to 72 hours according toresearch from John Hopkins University.

    For most people, the effects of over-drinking last for a significantly shorter amount of time – normally just 24 hours. It’s all related to how much alcohol was consumed and how many preventative measures were taken to avoid dehydration. Ethnicity, gender, the health of your liver, what medications you’re taking and general nutritional status also play a role.

    Why do hangovers feel so bad?

    Alcohol making you severely dehydrated and as a result, there are unpleasant symptoms like headaches, nausea and stomach pain. But there are some factors that will make one hangover worse than another. 

    It turns out that as you age, your hangovers (should) get better – rather than worse. One 2014 Danish study found that the chance of a severe hangover was significantly lower in older people, compared to younger people. “Older people are more experienced drinkers and develop a tolerance to alcohol,” says Dr Deborah Lee. 

    As well as how much you drink, what you drink also plays a huge role. “Congeners are substances produced during the alcohol fermentation process that gives alcohol its colour, smell and flavour.” Dr Lee says, “Dark coloured spirits contain the highest levels of congeners. Sulphites are sometimes added to the wine. Some people suffer from a sensitivity to sulphites which gives them a headache after drinking wine.”

    The same goes for how much water you drink. “Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you pass urine more often. If you don’t’ drink enough water when you are drinking alcohol, this can lead to dehydration. Dehydration worsens hangover symptoms.” 

    And how much food you eat, “Drinking with an empty stomach tends to worsen a hangover. This is because alcohol irritates the stomach lining, and if there is food in the stomach, this provides some protection.”

    But unfortunately, it might just be down to genetics. “The fact people seem to vary enormously in terms of severity of hangover symptoms, is often due to genetic variability. 45% of the variation in hangover frequency is due to genetic factors,” our expert says.

    How to Cure a Hangover

    Drinking alcohol to the point of intoxication may lead to a hangover. While drinking modestly or not at all are the best ways to prevent a hangover, after one begins, there are steps you can take to minimize the symptoms and ease your discomfort.

    There is no true "cure" for a hangover—other than time—but there are remedies that can offer you relief. However, some of the widely used, traditional hangover remedies do little to relieve symptoms, and some of them can actually make the situation worse.

    Helpful Hangover Remedies

    Your hangover symptoms should naturally subside between 24 to 72 hours after consuming alcohol—though the exact amount of time will depend on how much alcohol you consumed and other individual factors. While you can't make your body metabolize alcohol faster, there are remedies that will help you feel better while you wait.

    Water or Sports Drinks

    Alcohol has a diuretic effect, meaning it increases your body's urine production. Excess alcohol can also cause vomiting and diarrhea, which worsen your body's water loss. This can cause dehydration and, in turn, may lead to some of the most uncomfortable symptoms associated with hangovers like headaches, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

    The quickest way to relieve those symptoms is to rehydrate by drinking lots of water. Some people may also turn to sports drinks like Gatorade to replace electrolytes. While there's no evidence that these drinks will reduce the duration or severity of your hangover, they can help you rehydrate.

    Pain Relievers

    Aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) may reduce a hangover-induced headache and muscle pain. However, they should not be used if you are experiencing abdominal pain or nausea. These medications, called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are gastric irritants and can compound gastrointestinal symptoms.

    Acetaminophen (Tylenol) should not be taken during a hangover. Alcohol can increase the toxicity of this medication and cause serious harm to your liver as a result.

    If you're experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms during your hangover, like nausea or indigestion, antacids may help.

    Nutrition

    Eating a healthy meal may help you combat some hangover symptoms. Alcohol can disrupt your blood sugar levels, which can lead to symptoms like sweating, fatigue, and shakiness. Eating a fiber-rich breakfast may help you correct your blood sugar levels (and could improve your mood as well).

    If you can't handle the idea of eating anything solid while experiencing severe hangover symptoms, try some bouillon soup. It also can help replace salt and potassium lost during a drinking binge.

    There is some evidence that vitamin B3 (also called niacin) and zinc may reduce the severity of hangovers. While it isn't clear whether these nutrients will impact a hangover that's already in progress, eating a diet rich in vitamin B3 and zinc may be associated with fewer, less intense hangovers.

    Sleep

    Even though alcohol may initially help you fall asleep, it ultimately disrupts your ability to get a good night's rest. If you're able, try to get extra rest during your hangover. Consider waking up briefly to drink extra water or have a snack before heading back to bed. Sleep may also reduce some of your discomfort and help you wait out your symptoms.

    Hangover Remedies to Avoid

    While there are several common myths about how to cure a hangover, none of these have scientific support. Some may even be harmful to your health.

    The Hair of the Dog

    The practice of having a drink the next morning to ward off the effects of a hangover doesn't work in the long run, contrary to popular belief. It may lessen the symptoms in the short term, but giving the liver more alcohol to metabolize will only increase your discomfort later and lengthen the amount of time you have to wait until your hangover ends.

    Additionally, getting into the habit of having a morning-after drink may lead to more alcohol consumption and can contribute to eventual alcohol dependence.

    Black Coffee

    Coffee may relieve the feeling of fatigue associated with a hangover and help alleviate the headache symptoms by constricting blood vessels, but that relief is only temporary and the symptoms will return. Coffee also acts as a diuretic, which means it further dehydrates the body.

    Pain Relievers Before Bed

    Taking preemptive pain relievers before going to sleep may seem to make sense, but this approach to hangover prevention fails for two reasons:

    • The effects of the pain reliever will usually wear off before the onset of hangover symptoms. It would be better to take the medication after your symptoms begin.
    • Your liver metabolizes many over-the-counter pain medicines, including NSAIDs and acetaminophen. This puts stress on your liver while it's already metabolizing alcohol and, in the case of acetaminophen, it is potentially dangerous.

    Fried or Greasy Foods

    If you eat fatty foods before drinking, the oils can coat your stomach lining and slow down the absorption of alcohol. This can help reduce the severity of a hangover. However, eating greasy food the morning after a drinking bout won't impact your hangover, and it may even add to your gastrointestinal problems by irritating the stomach and intestines.

    Burnt Toast

    Activated charcoal (also called activated carbon) can act as a filter in the body, and it's often used to treat some types of poisonings and overdoses. While it may seem logical that the carbon found on burnt toast might act the same way, it's not the same material.

    Activated charcoal is processed in a specific way to increase its ability to absorb toxins; however, the carbon found on burnt toast is not processed in the same manner, and it contains other compounds. Additionally, activated charcoal may not be effective at absorbing alcohol after your body has already begun metabolizing it. In fact, over-the-counter products sold as hangover cures that contain activated charcoal are intended to be taken before drinking, not after the hangover begins.

    Drinking as much water as possible while you're consuming alcohol and before you go to bed will relieve a great deal of the hangover symptoms caused by dehydration. While there is no cure-all treatment for a hangover, you can increase your comfort by treating your individual symptoms while you wait for the hangover to end.

    The Top 8 Natural Hangover Remedies

    According to Dr. Coupet, alcohol enters the bloodstream within minutes of your first sip and is then absorbed by the digestive tract — starting in the stomach before it is processed by the liver — as your body works to break it down, also known as alcohol metabolism.

    During alcohol metabolism, a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde is created, which your body works to eliminate, explains Peter Malamet, DO, an emergency medicine physician at Mike O'Callaghan Military Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

    “How you feel can often depend on how fast you metabolize acetaldehyde and how fast you can get rid of it,” says Dr. Malamet. “Some people don’t break down acetaldehyde as well as others.”

    Although the bulk of alcohol metabolism occurs in the liver, it is believed that some alcohol metabolism can occur in the pancreas and brain, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.­

    So what exactly causes that extreme thirst, horrible headache and feelings of nausea?

    “The impurities in alcohol (which vary from one type of alcohol to another) can also contribute to the severity of the hangover. In other words, the more pure the alcohol, the less severe the hangover,” says Kelly Kennedy, RD, Everyday Health staff nutritionist.

    Kennedy advises drinking in moderation and emphasizes that there’s no real cure for a hangover except not to get one in the first place.

    But what if you want to enjoy a few cocktails and not feel terrible the following day? There are a few things you can do to ease the pain.

    1. Drink Water to Avoid Dehydration

    “The alcohol in your drink acts as a diuretic, which can make you urinate more,” explains Kennedy. “This can lead to dehydration, which is one of the major causes of hangover symptoms.”

    In other words, that desert-level thirst that wakes you up in the wee hours of the morning is a signal that you're well on the way to hungover. The amount of water that you take in should equal that amount you lose, and alcohol can upset this balance.

    “If you know you’ll be drinking that night, stay well-hydrated throughout the day and have plenty to drink before heading to bed,” she says. And if you do wake up with a hangover, do your best to drink as much water as you can. “Even having little sips every so often will help.”

    2. Drink Other Fluids to Restore Electrolytes

    “Because alcohol is a diuretic and you’re urinating a lot, you’re also losing electrolytes, and you can experience dizziness, nausea, and cramping as a result” says Malamet, who credits an electrolyte imbalance as one of the leading causes of feeling fatigued from a hangover.

    Research published in February 2015 in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research showed that drinking electrolytes after long periods of dehydration can significantly help restore important minerals, like sodium, potassium, and calcium.

    What electrolyte-rich drinks should you reach for? Kennedy recommends sports drinks and broth to help restore and replace lost electrolytes and to get you back on the mend faster.

    Fermented drinks like kombucha can also be beneficial to drink when feeling nutrient-depleted because they're rich in minerals, antioxidants, and good-for-you-gut bacteria.

    3. Eat Nutrient-Rich Food Before and After Drinking

    To prevent a hangover, past research has shown pairing alcohol with food can help your body more efficiently metabolize the alcohol. The digestion of food before or during alcohol consumption can help increase anti-diuretic hormone levels (ADH), sugar fructose, and blood flow to the liver, all which work to help your body more quickly break down alcohol.

    What do you eat if you’re already hungover? Contrary to popular belief, greasy foods will not help you to absorb a hangover. “Craving a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich the morning after a night out drinking is your body’s response to low blood sugar and dehydration,” explains Maggie Michalczyk, RDN, a dietitian and food blogger based in Chicago.

    But it’s not going to absorb the alcohol — that’s already made its way through your liver. Instead, complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables are your best bet, says Michalczyk.

    Experts recommend reaching for fruits like bananas, because they are chock full of minerals like potassium that alcohol can deplete. A roughly 7-inch-long banana has 422 milligrams (mg) of potassium and 32 mg of magnesium, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). If you can handle the sound of a blender, a smoothie of coconut water and banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter, and your favorite protein powder is what Michalczyk orders.

    4. Try Ginger to Ease Nausea

    Doctors and nutritionists alike agree that ginger is one of the best natural remedies for soothing an upset stomach, which is often a common symptom of a hangover.

    “Ginger can aid digestion and in this way can ease stomach upset,” explains Kennedy, who credits alcohol irritating the lining of the stomach as one of the reasons for hangover-related nausea.

    The chemical compounds in ginger are believed to help ease stomach pain and aid digestion. A meta-analysis published in December 2019 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that ginger reduced vomiting in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment by 60 percent and fatigue by 80 percent.

    You can enjoy this superfood in many different ways. For soothing an upset stomach, try brewing some ginger tea or mixing fresh ginger into a smoothie.

    5. Have Chamomile to Reduce Anxiety (or Hangxiety)

    For some, hangover-induced anxiety, or hangxiety, can be as taxing emotionally as some of the physical symptoms of a hangover.

    If this doesn’t sound familiar, it might be because hangxiety affects us all differently. In a study published March 2019 in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, researchers discovered that shy people had greater anxiety levels the day after drinking alcohol.

    Michalczyk suggests chamomile tea to calm any emotionally overwhelming feelings brought on by drinking, and research supports using this flowering plant to soothe anxiety. Double bonus: Chamomile can help you sleep more soundly and relieve an upset stomach, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

    6. Restore Energy With Vitamin B and Protect Immunity With Vitamin C

    Many hangover symptoms result from nutrient deficiencies, and vitamin B is particularly affected by alcohol use, according to a study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

    Vitamin B is responsible for energy, brain function, and keeping the immune system and nervous system acting properly. A depletion of vitamin B can be associated with feelings of fatigue and low energy levels. If you still can’t get your mind off breakfast sandwiches, Michalczyk suggests eating eggs — which are a great source of the energy-producing B vitamins that alcohol flushes out — with lean protein like turkey bacon and a whole-grain English muffin.

    According to experts, another vitamin to be mindful of when recovering from a hangover is vitamin C. Research published in 2015 in Alcohol Research Current Reviews showed a connection between alcohol use and a weakened immune system, impairing the body's ability to defend itself. To avoid opening yourself up to colds, viruses, and potential alcohol-related illness, load up on vitamin C with fruits and vegetables like broccoli, which has 135 percent of the daily value per cup, according to the USDA. Also reach for oranges, red bell peppers, kiwis, and strawberries.

    7. Avoid Medication That Can Cause Adverse Effects With Alcohol

    There are certain drugs that can interact with alcohol and cause severe hangover-like symptoms, explains Malamet. One in particular to be mindful of is Flagyl (metronidazole), which is often used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, stomach, vagina, joints, or respiratory tract.

    Other common medication, when consumed with alcohol, can cause dizziness, drowsiness, impaired concentration, and an increased risk of overdose, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. These include antidepressants, like Effexor, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and Zoloft; stimulants, such as Adderall (Adderall XR) or Ritalin (methylphenidaten); and benzodiazepines that treat anxiety, including Xanax (Alprazolam) and Clonazepam (Klonopin). Allergy medication can negatively interact with alcohol, as well.

    Malamet recommends always speaking with your doctor about possible medication interactions. “Some medications interact with the body’s ability to break down the alcohol, which can increase the severity of the hangover,” he says.

    8. Go Back to Bed to Restore Circadian Rhythm

    One of the most restorative remedies you can try when hungover is simply to get more sleep. In fact, delayed cognitive function during a hangover is likely linked to the poor sleep associated with alcohol use, according to Harvard Health. In fact, a study published in December 2018 in the journal Addiction found that a hangover may impair sustained attention and negatively impact everyday tasks like driving.

    The National Sleep Foundation notes that alcohol disrupts your circadian rhythm and prevents REM sleep; it’s unlikely you’ll fall into a deep, restful sleep after drinking more than a glass of wine or two. Poor sleep, according to Harvard, is linked to anxiety, irritability, and depressed mood, and alcohol, as a depressant, exacerbates these effects.

    "It’s been shown that you’re unable to achieve the usual REM sleep cycle when drinking alcohol, so even if you’re getting a couple hours of sleep, you’re probably not getting good sleep,” says Malamet.

    What is a hangover and what are the symptoms?

If you do choose to drink as much as this, spread your drinking evenly over three or more days and take several drink-free days during the week.     Did you have a few too many drinks last night? Are you wading through a cycle of regret, self-pity, and an unsuccessful attempt to remember how life was without a splitting headache? We've all been there—and we’ll most likely go there again.

    A famous quote says, "When you drink alcohol, you are just borrowing happiness from tomorrow”—most of us can relate. In the face of this adversity, we can’t promise an instant miracle; sometimes, the only true cure for a hangover is the agonizingly slow passage of time—but there are a few ways to ease the pain.

    We asked our Kitchen Stories colleagues about their personal remedies against a bad hangover—and while everybody agreed that it’s always best to chug loads of water before going to bed, there are a few more tips that could become your lifesaver the morning after a late night out.

    Pickled cucumbers & pickle juice


    After a night of drinking, your body is zapped of water and electrolytes—which is why you suffer from headaches and dizziness. Pickles are a famous hangover cure due to their electrolyte-boosting salts. You can even have a shot of pickle juice to replace the lost nutrients and put your body back in balance.

    No surprise that we at Kitchen Stories believe that food is the best medicine for almost everything. While chicken noodle soup is a favored dish when having a flu, some of us even rate it as the go-to hangover cure. A slurpy bowl of hot, salty soup, with a mix of broth, sodium, protein-rich chicken, and high-carbohydrate noodles is soothing and energizing at the same time.

    Cup Noodles


    If you don’t feel great enough to go outside to grab a bowl of chicken noodle soup from a trusted restaurant, or even make it yourself, one of our colleagues is happy to share his personal hangover healer: Cup Noodles! It’s high in sodium—which your body craves in its dehydrated condition—as well as fast and easy to make: All you need to do is boil water and add it to the instant noodle mix.

    Chocolate milk


    Believe it or not, a glass of ice-cold chocolate milk can work wonders on your general condition after a night of drinking. As alcohol causes inflammation of the stomach lining, the sweet chocolaty milk helps settle your stomach while raising your blood sugar and rehydrating your body. Plus, for many people, chocolate seems to fix everything.

    While experts fight about the validity of the so-called “hair of the dog,” many people swear by this slightly controversial method. Although the treating-alcohol-with-alcohol approach actually seems a bit paradoxical, there is some interesting science behind it. Put simply, consuming a driblet of alcohol the morning after can inhibit the conversion process from methanol to formaldehyde—a toxin that may be partly responsible for several hangover symptoms.

    A Bloody Mary is a common hangover remedy, as the lemon and tomato juice additionally replenishes your body with vitamins. You might want to trust your gut feeling on whether or not you’re ready for another drink—if worse comes to worst, you're back where you started.

    Gravy


    A jugful of thick, rich, slightly salty, and flavorful gravy will make you feel better immediately just by smelling it. A very popular hangover combination is gravy enjoyed with hearty (or even sweet!), fluffy biscuits to soak all the heavenly creamy sauce.

    Depending on how bad you feel, a rich, calorie-packed breakfast is one of the best remedies for a hangover—I've pretty much sworn by this method since I had my first drink (which was obviously when coming of legal age). It can help maintain your blood sugar levels, replace fatty acids, and break down the alcohol in your liver. And don’t forget the eggs, as they’re a great natural source of cysteine—an amino acid that counteracts the effects of acetaldehyde, a by-product of alcohol metabolism and a headache-causing toxin.

    Prairie Oyster


    This adventurous shot contains a raw egg, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. As we already learned, eggs contain the amino acid cysteine, which helps your body reduce the effects of toxic alcohol by-products. Good news: If you manage to slug this down, you’re most certainly on the mend!

    Nurse your hangover with an ice-cold espresso tonic! The espresso will make you feel less sleepy and weak. Tonic water is a natural source of quinine, which is normally used to treat leg cramps. Add a dash of ginger syrup, as ginger is rumored to assist in the digestion of alcohol, thus easing an upset stomach.

    Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who's ever drunk too much knows the consequences.

    Alcohol makes you pee more, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover.

    Hangover cures are generally a myth. There are no cures for a hangover, but there are things you can do to avoid one and, if you do have one, ease the discomfort.

    Tips to avoid a hangover

    To avoid a hangover:

    • Do not drink more than you know your body can cope with. If you're not sure how much that is, be careful.
    • Do not drink on an empty stomach. Before you start drinking, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help to slow down your body's absorption of alcohol.
    • Do not drink dark coloured drinks if you've found you're sensitive to them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners, which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse.
    • Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink. Fizzy drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your body.
    • Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by your bed to sip if you wake up during the night.

    Hangover treatment

    Dealing with a hangover involves rehydrating your body to help you deal with the painful symptoms. The best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep after a drinking session.

    Painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps.

    Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.

    Bouillon soup (a thin, vegetable-based broth) is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. It's also easy for a fragile stomach to digest.

    You can replace lost fluids by drinking bland liquids that are gentle on your digestive system, such as water, soda water and isotonic drinks.

    Things to avoid

    Drinking more alcohol, or "hair of the dog", does not help. Drinking in the morning is a risky habit, and you may simply be delaying the appearance of symptoms until the extra alcohol wears off.

    If you've been drinking heavily, doctors advise that you wait at least 48 hours before drinking any more alcohol (even if you don't have a hangover), to give your body time to recover.

    Sometimes, of course, a hangover makes this advice easier to follow.

    Advice for regular drinkers

    To keep the health risks from alcohol to a low level, if you drink most weeks:

    • do not drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis
    • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week
    • if you want to cut down, try to have several alcohol-free days each week

    14 units is equivalent to 6 pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of low-strength wine.

    A 750ml bottle of red, white or rosé wine (ABV 13.5%) contains 10 units.

    But what if you want to enjoy a few cocktails and not feel terrible the following day? There are a few things you can do to ease the pain.

    1. Drink Water to Avoid Dehydration

    “The alcohol in your drink acts as a diuretic, which can make you urinate more,” explains Kennedy. “This can lead to dehydration, which is one of the major causes of hangover symptoms.”

    3. Eat Nutrient-Rich Food Before and After Drinking

The digestion of food before or during alcohol consumption can help increase anti-diuretic hormone levels (ADH), sugar fructose, and blood flow to the liver, all which work to help your body more quickly break down alcohol.

    “Ginger can aid digestion and in this way can ease stomach upset,” explains Kennedy, who credits alcohol irritating the lining of the stomach as one of the reasons for hangover-related nausea.

    The chemical compounds in ginger are believed to help ease stomach pain and aid digestion. A meta-analysis published in December 2019 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that ginger reduced vomiting in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment by 60 percent and fatigue by 80 percent.

A depletion of vitamin B can be associated with feelings of fatigue and low energy levels. If you still can’t get your mind off breakfast sandwiches, Michalczyk suggests eating eggs — which are a great source of the energy-producing B vitamins that alcohol flushes out — with lean protein like turkey bacon and a whole-grain English muffin.

    According to experts, another vitamin to be mindful of when recovering from a hangover is vitamin C. Research published in 2015 in Alcohol Research Current Reviews showed a connection between alcohol use and a weakened immune system, impairing the body's ability to defend itself.     7. Avoid Medication That Can Cause Adverse Effects With Alcohol

    There are certain drugs that can interact with alcohol and cause severe hangover-like symptoms, explains Malamet. One in particular to be mindful of is Flagyl (metronidazole), which is often used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, stomach, vagina, joints, or respiratory tract.

    Other common medication, when consumed with alcohol, can cause dizziness, drowsiness, impaired concentration, and an increased risk of overdose, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. These include antidepressants, like Effexor, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and Zoloft; stimulants, such as Adderall (Adderall XR) or Ritalin (methylphenidaten); and benzodiazepines that treat anxiety, including Xanax (Alprazolam) and Clonazepam (Klonopin). Allergy medication can negatively interact with alcohol, as well.

    Malamet recommends always speaking with your doctor about possible medication interactions. “Some medications interact with the body’s ability to break down the alcohol, which can increase the severity of the hangover,” he says.

    8. Go Back to Bed to Restore Circadian Rhythm

    One of the most restorative remedies you can try when hungover is simply to get more sleep. In fact, delayed cognitive function during a hangover is likely linked to the poor sleep associated with alcohol use, according to Harvard Health. In fact, a study published in December 2018 in the journal Addiction found that a hangover may impair sustained attention and negatively impact everyday tasks like driving.

    Our digestive system breaks down alcohol in the following sequence: alcohol first breaks down into acetaldehyde, which is 10 to 30 times as toxic as regular alcohol.     Hydration

    “Alcohol is a diuretic,” Dr Ross Perry, medical director at Cosmedics, explains. “This means it increases the amount of urine a person passes and the loss of fluid causes you to feel dehydrated and therefore you want to knock back plenty of water to feel hydrated again.” 

    But it won’t take away the headache or feeling sick in the morning, he says, it “may lessen the symptoms of a hangover” like thirst and dry mouth. 

    Replenishing lost nutrients

    There’s a whole host of foods that cure hangovers – and that’s thanks to their inner nutritional goodness.

    A solid dose of nutrients will help to restore you after the effects of alcohol have taken place, as you’re replenishing the electrolytes you lost through drinking. 

    “It’s widely known that drinking alcohol blocks the production of a hormone that helps your body hold on to water, therefore leading to dehydration and the loss of electrolytes like potassium and sodium,” Dr Ross Perry says. 

    “Eating foods containing potassium such as bananas, oranges, apricots, grapefruit, honeydew and cantaloupe melon, leafy greens, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, mushroom and peas will help to lessen the hangover and replenish the loss of electrolytes making you feel better quicker.”

    Red ginseng

    While it’s not something we expect many people to have in the back of their kitchen cupboard, it’s worth noting for the next time a hangover hits. 

    Red ginseng is a powerful antioxidant, explains Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy. In one study from 2014, two groups were randomly assigned to drink either red ginseng after 100ml of whiskey or 100ml of water. The results showed that the blood alcohol concentration level was significantly lower in the red ginseng group than in the other. 

    “There was also a positive effect on hangover symptoms in the RGD group.” Dr Lee says, “For the body to metabolise alcohol, requires much in the way of oxidation. As a result of oxidation, many dangerous ‘free radicals’ are produced. These are electrically charged molecules that have the potential to damage DNA. One of the reasons red ginseng may be effective as a hangover remedy, is that it home remedies for nausea from drinking as a powerful antioxidant, and neutralises free radicals.”

    Ditch the coffee

    This is something to avoid, rather than a cure, as it’s a classic urban myth for getting rid of a hangover. TV has made it look like this is the number one way to cure a hangover but this is not actually the case.

    “Coffee is a popular remedy to sober up and give energy after drinking, but it can contribute to dehydration.” Nutritionist Shona Wilkinson warns, as it’s a diuretic much like alcohol itself. “And avoid smoking, as the chemicals in cigarettes can increase feelings of nausea.” 

    Instead, if you want a hit of energy, opt for a sports drink like Lucozade or Gatorade which will restore electrolytes while keeping you awake with sugar. 

    Apple cider vinegar

    This cure-all remedy supposedly works for everything, but Dr Ross Perry assures us it’s a winner for a hangover. 

    “Apple cider vinegar can help to restore your body’s PH level which becomes more acidic after drinking alcohol.” He explains, “And therefore helps to bring your PH back to a more normal level.”

    And while it does have a somewhat diuretic effect, it “can help with morning after fluid retention and is great at restoring blood sugars. These sugars can be lost after a night out drinking, which leaves you tired and lethargic.”

    Have a better breakfast

    A big fry up always seems like the best thing when you’re hungover. But it can actually make you feel worse – very quickly.

    “The reality is that a fry up or a takeaway  is often quite greasy and won’t absorb the alcohol.” Dr Perry says, “The overall effect can actually lead to a bit of an icky tummy, which we often associate with the alcohol but actually may be a combination of the food and alcohol combined.”

    Instead, go for a breakfast of poached eggs with roasted tomatoes and wholemeal toast, suggests medical nutritionist Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart. “Eggs contain the amino acid cysteine, which can help to break down acetaldehyde [an element of alcohol that contributes to a hangover].

    “If you can’t handle that, then pick a banana. Bananas contain potassium, a mineral that is lost when you drink alcohol and contributes to symptoms of dehydration.”

    Get some fresh air

    If you’re feeling tired or really hanging, the idea of leaving the house isn’t going to be a pleasant one. But, according to Dr Perry, “getting fresh air is in theory a good idea following a hangover but I’d suggest going for a walk rather than just sitting down and breathing in fresh air.”

    He suggests, “Keep it gentle as alcohol is a diuretic meaning that the following morning [after drinking], your body is dehydrated. Hitting the gym hard and sweating lots isn’t advised as you can end up losing even more fluids.

    “By taking a gentle walk it will help maintain blood flow through the body which is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. 

    “Of course, just getting some fresh air is a good idea as the more oxygen you breathe in will help to start to flush out those nasty toxins from the night before and make you feel less tired and having a peaceful environment i.e.- not talking to anyone – will possibly help lessen – rather than ‘get rid’ – of a headache too.”

    CBD

    The CBD surge has well and truly taken over but it’s normally something we associate with natural anxiety remedies and skincare. 

    Turns out, it’s great for a hangover too. “CBD reduces headaches and migraines by integrating with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Alcohol use throws the ECS out of balance, and CBD can help it restore its balance.” Nutritional therapist and eating psychology coach, Claudia le Feuvre, says.

    For most people, the effects of over-drinking last for a significantly shorter amount of time – normally just 24 hours.     And how much food you eat, “Drinking with an empty stomach tends to worsen a hangover. This is because alcohol irritates the stomach lining, and if there is food in the stomach, this provides some protection.”

    But unfortunately, it might just be down to genetics. “The fact people seem to vary enormously in terms of severity of hangover symptoms, is often due to genetic variability. 45% of the variation in hangover frequency is due to genetic factors,” our expert says.

    Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.

    Bouillon soup (a thin, vegetable-based broth) is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. It's also easy for a fragile stomach to digest.

    You can replace lost fluids by drinking bland liquids that are gentle on your digestive system, such as water, soda water and isotonic drinks.

    Things to avoid

    Drinking more alcohol, or "hair of the dog", does not help. Drinking in the morning is a risky habit, and you may simply be delaying the appearance of symptoms until the extra alcohol wears off.

    If you've been drinking heavily, doctors advise that you wait at least 48 hours before drinking any more alcohol (even if you don't have a hangover), to give your body time to recover.

    Sometimes, of course, a hangover makes this advice easier to follow.

    Advice for regular drinkers

    To keep the health risks from alcohol to a low level, if you drink most weeks:

In the face of this adversity, we can’t promise an instant miracle; sometimes, the only true cure for a hangover is the agonizingly slow passage of time—but there are a few ways to ease the pain.

    We asked our Kitchen Stories colleagues about their personal remedies against a bad hangover—and while everybody agreed that it’s always best to chug loads of water before going to bed, there are a few more tips that could become your lifesaver the morning after a late night out.

As alcohol causes inflammation of the stomach lining, the sweet chocolaty milk helps settle your stomach while raising your blood sugar and rehydrating your body. Plus, for many people, chocolate seems to fix everything.

    While experts fight about the validity of the so-called “hair of the dog,” many people swear by this slightly controversial method. Although the treating-alcohol-with-alcohol approach actually seems a bit paradoxical, there is some interesting science behind it. Put simply, consuming a driblet of alcohol the morning after can inhibit the conversion process from methanol to formaldehyde—a toxin that may be partly responsible for several hangover symptoms.

It can help maintain your blood sugar levels, replace fatty acids, and break down the alcohol in your liver. And don’t forget the eggs, as they’re a great natural source of cysteine—an amino acid that counteracts the effects of acetaldehyde, a by-product of alcohol metabolism and a headache-causing toxin.
