Frequently Asked Questions

Making Deposits at the ATM
  • The ATM saves you time by avoiding long teller lines.
  • The ATM is available for customer transactions virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • Deposits made on or before the ATM cut-off time will get same-day credit.
  • Deposit Image ATMs offer additional advantages, including:
    • No envelopes or deposit slips are needed – All you need is to insert your cash or checks
    • Check images and cash summaries are printed on the receipt

When a bill is not accepted for deposit, it can be due to a variety of reasons. For example, the condition of the bill or some other factor makes the bill undetectable / unreadable, or you have reached the maximum number of bills that can be deposited at one time, or the ATM is temporarily not accepting deposits. If you experience a problem making a deposit using an ATM, please see a representative inside the branch.

The most common reason is that the account and routing number has not been encoded with magnetic ink. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home printers. On some occasions, the ink from a signed name may run into the line of characters at the bottom and hinder depositing.

At our new Deposit Image ATMs, you can insert up to 35 bills at one time. If you have more than 35 bills, select Add More Cash and continue making deposits until you complete your transaction.

Making Transfers and Withdrawals at the ATM
ATM Features

You may set or change your preferences at the ATM once you enter your PIN. From the Select Transactions screen, select Other Options. Then, select one of the following sets of preferences and follow the prompts to complete your transaction: Account Statements, Set Fast Cash, Set Language, Set Receipt.

A mini statement is a transaction record that displays up to the last 10 deposits, the last 10 debits or the last 10 transactions. To print a mini statement at the ATM, you must first enter your PIN. From the Select Transactions screen, select Other Options, and then select Account Statements. You will have the option to print a mini statement for a fee.

Each check contains an account and routing numbers that are printed with magnetic ink. The ATM reads the magnetic ink and then reads the amount by using Optical Character Recognition. Customers are asked to confirm the amount of every deposit. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home printers.

ATM Accessibility

BBVA USA ATMs are "talking ATMs" that deliver private, spoken instructions through a headset that plugs into an audio jack on the ATM. This option was created for people who are blind or visually impaired. The ATMs feature spoken instructions for every capability found at our ATMs, so you can make deposits, withdraw cash, transfer money between accounts, check account balances, and complete some types of other transactions.

Availability of Funds

Banks are governed by federal regulations regarding the availability of funds, and BBVA makes every effort possible to make funds available as quickly as possible to our customers. BBVA's policy looks at different criteria to determine availability of funds, such as type of deposit, deposit amount and customer relationship.

Using Debit Cards or ATM Cards Internationally
ATM Fees

BBVA customers can withdraw cash with their BBVA Debit Card or ATM Card without a fee at nearly 1,000 BBVA USA ATMs in the United States. Withdrawals, deposits, transfers, and balance inquiries from ATMs at other financial institutions in the United States may be assessed a fee. You may also be charged a fee by the ATM operator or any network used. You may be charged a fee for a balance inquiry even if you do not complete a funds transfer. What to Do If an ATM Eats Your Deposit

Standing in front of an ATM that just ate your cash deposit without crediting your account or issuing a receipt can leave you feeling helpless, and even hopeless. Just ask Linda Murray Bullard, who recently found herself in that situation.

“A horrific experience!” says Murray Bullard, who owns a business consulting firm in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Bullard eventually received her credit, but she had to act fast. If an ATM takes your money, here’s what you can do.

Looking for a new bank? Jump ahead to our list of overall recommended banks.

Stand your ground and contact your bank

Your first move should be to alert your bank or credit union, which will investigate before crediting your account. Although it may not come naturally to some people, the name of the game is keeping your cool. For Murray Bullard, that meant staying put and immediately reaching out to her bank.

“When it chewed up my money, I refused to move before I contacted the bank and spoke to a live person,” she says.

“I refused to move before I contacted the bank and spoke to a live person.”
Linda Murray Bullard, Chattanooga, Tennessee

“The lady assured me it would be corrected the next business day and someone would call me as soon as it was corrected. They did just what she said, and my deposit was credited.”

» If you use ATMs frequently, here are the top banks for avoiding ATM fees and getting fees reimbursed

How common Bullard’s experience is isn’t clear. The ATM Industry Association doesn’t have data that would show the scope of this issue, according to Michael Lee, the group’s chief executive, who says he hasn’t “heard of a single reported case of this happening.” The American Bankers Association didn’t respond to requests for comment when asked about such incidents.

Murray Bullard, however, certainly isn’t alone: Based on scores of online message board discussions on the topic, cash-hungry ATMs aren’t a completely unheard-of phenomenon. And considering that 68% of Americans use ATMs at least once a month, according to a 2014 Nielsen study, it’s worth knowing how to respond to this potentially frustrating situation.

Confirm that your bank performs an investigation

Shane Allen, media relations director of Personal Trainer Food, a Fort Worth, Texas-based company that helps consumers create healthy meal plans, found himself in a similar predicament a few months ago when he tried to deposit $800 at a Capital One cash machine.

“The ATM took the cash and printed out a receipt saying there’d been an error, and that I should call a certain phone number,” Allen says.

His bank assured him that it would look into the situation when he called and credited his account for the time being.

“They warned me that they would investigate all the deposits that day," Allen says, "and if for some reason they determined the deposit was less, they’d take it out of my account.”

A month later, Allen received a letter in the mail saying the bank had completed its investigation and determined that he had, in fact, deposited $800.

“Overall, I think they handled it very well,” he says. Capital One didn’t immediately respond to a request for a comment.

“All transactions are logged, and we utilize our logs to research these transactions. If a problem results in any account fees, we will credit their account for those fees.”
Kristopher Dahl, Wells Fargo spokesman

If an ATM eats your deposit, you should contact your bank immediately, says Kristopher Dahl, a spokesman for Wells Fargo. That will spur an examination of the incident.

“I can’t share much information about the investigation process, but all transactions are logged, and we utilize our logs to research these transactions,” Dahl says, adding that those instances happen rarely. “If a problem with an ATM results in any account fees, we will also credit their account for those fees.”

Note the time of the transaction, gather evidence

As well as eating cash, ATMs also swallow checks on occasion, as Natalie Nicole Gilbert can attest to.

“If you must use an ATM and it goes awry, note the time of the failed deposit,” says Gilbert, a Los Angeles-based musician who recently tried depositing a check worth about $1,000.

Because she didn’t usually use that particular account to make deposits of that size, the transaction “tripped a security feature that suspected potential fraud,” Gilbert says. As a result, her financial institution froze her funds while trying to verify that the check was valid.

“It was particularly inconvenient, as I’d intended to pay my rent that month with that check, and the hold didn't release for another week or more after my rent was due,” she says.

Gilbert recommends that customers take smartphone pictures of the error screen on the ATM if one comes up during a botched transaction. She adds that people may want to copy the serial numbers on bills before inserting currency into a machine. The more evidence you can gather, the better.

Responding quickly is crucial

Although faulty ATMs can make you feel extremely powerless, the ball is very much in your court to fix the situation. Act quickly to get credit for your money.

Pros Explained

  • Sign-up bonuses for deposit accounts –While sign-up bonuses are more common among credit cards and business accounts, PNC offers a sign-up bonus when you open a Virtual Wallet. Depending on the type of account, you can earn either $50, $200, or $300 when you sync your account with a qualifying direct deposit.
  • ATM fee reimbursement –Depending on which type of deposit account you sign up for, you could either get non-network ATM fees reimbursed or have them dropped altogether. This might include being reimbursed for several specific ATM fees per statement cycle or receiving up to a certain amount in ATM fees back.
  • Wide range of products and services – Beyond deposit accounts, PNC offers everything from student loans to auto loans to wealth management to life insurance and much more.

Cons Explained

  • Harder to open a stand-alone account – PNC takes a slight departure from standard banking products in how it packages its deposit accounts. Its Virtual Wallet offers three accounts rolled into one: “Spend,” which is a primary checking account; “Reserve,” which is an interest-earning checking account; and “Growth,” which is a savings account. PNC’s unique ecosystem for its deposit accounts can be befuddling. You’ll need to sit down and commit to learning the details and getting your head around how it works. Stand-alone checking and savings accounts are offered, but per PNC Bank’s website, its Virtual Wallet seems to be the de facto type of account. To open a stand-alone deposit account, it typically takes anywhere from two to three weeks, and you’ll need to do it over the phone. If you want to open a Virtual Wallet, you can do so online, and get access to funds immediately after approval.
  • Some caveats to keep in mind —There are some caveats to keep in mind if you want to get your monthly fees dropped or to snag the best interest rate. For instance, to get the featured relationship rates, you'll need to link qualifying PNC accounts to your Virtual Wallet. But PNC will only do so at your discretion. The accounts won't link automatically.

Who Is PNC Bank Best For?

PNC should appeal to customers who want a full range of services under a single financial institution. It could be a particularly strong fit for those who want:

  • To open both a savings and checking account with a single bank
  • A one-stop shop for banking and financial services
  • To step into a brick-and-mortar location and talk to a human (located in 25 states and the District of Columbia)
  • To bank with a long-standing, established institution

What Does PNC Bank Offer?

As you might expect from one of the largest financial institutions in the U.S., PNC Bank boasts a wide swath of financial products and services:

  • Savings account
  • Checking accounts
  • Virtual wallets (which are savings and checking accounts rolled into one)
  • Certificates of Deposits (CDs)
  • Credit cards

Interestingly enough, PNC's online-only offerings in states where it doesn't have branches are actually better than in the states where it does have brick-and-mortar locations.

Virtual Wallet

As PNC’s basic account with a handful of features, the Virtual Wallet includes three accounts that are packaged together. Just as Starbucks uses different words for its beverage sizes, PNC uses different lingo to brand its deposit accounts.

  • Spend –This is a regular checking account that might earn interest, depending on the Virtual Wallet account. It has a minimum amount to open an account of $25. However, the minimum requirement is $0 if you open the account online.
  • Reserve –An interest-bearing checking account, it’s designed for short-term savings goals. You need at least a $1 in your account for it to earn interest, but there is no minimum amount to open.
  • Growth – This is a savings account for longer-term savings also with no minimum amount to open.

Products and rates may vary depending on where you live. Not all products and services are offered in all locations. Rates and products vary by location.

The Virtual Wallet has a $7 monthly maintenance fee. You can drop the fee if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Maintain a $500 combined monthly average balance in your Spend and or/Reserve accounts
  • Make $500 in monthly direct deposits to your Spend account
  • Are 62 or older

If you set up a direct deposit of at least $500 made by an employer or outside agency, you can be rewarded with a $50 bonus. Your direct deposit will need to be made within 60 days of opening your account. You’ll receive your bonus in your account within 60 to 90 days.

Your Reserve account earns an APY of 0.01%. And to snag the slightly higher relationship rate of 0.02% on your Growth account, you’ll need to either use your debit card or Visa credit card to make at least five purchases or set up a monthly direct deposit of at least $500.

As a PNC account holder, you have access to 18,000 ATMs. As far as non-network ATM fees go, if you are a Virtual Wallet account holder, you’ll be reimbursed for the first two ATM transactions. And you’ll be reimbursed up to $5 in ATM surcharges at the end of each statement period. After that, the fees kick in: $3 per ATM visit in the U.S. and $5 for international ATM transactions. There’s also an overdraft fee of $36 per item, with a cap at four transactions per day.

Virtual Wallet With Performance Spend

Like the basic Virtual Wallet, PNC’s Virtual Wallet With Performance Spend only requires $25 in your Spend account to open it, or $0 if you open online. There’s a $15 monthly maintenance fee, which could be dropped if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • $2,000 monthly average balance on your Spend and/or Reserve accounts
  • $10,000 combined average monthly balance across any PNC consumer accounts
  • $2,000 in monthly direct deposits to your Spend account

And like PNC’s other virtual wallets, you can get a bump in the APY rate if you check one or both of the following boxes:

  • You make a combination of at least five or more debit card purchases or credit card transactions during the prior month
  • You have at least $2,000 in direct deposits per month.

If you set up a direct deposit of at least $2,000 made by an employer or outside agency, you can get a $200 bonus. It will need to be made within 60 days of opening your account. You’ll receive your bonus in your account within 60 to 90 days.

If you're using a non-PNC ATM, you can get a refund for up to four transactions per statement period. When it comes to ATM surcharges from other financial institutions, you can get up to $10 reimbursed per statement period.

Virtual Wallet With Performance Select

While PNC’s Virtual Wallet With Performance Select also only requires $25 in the Spend account to get started ($0 if you open online), the amounts to nix the monthly service charge are higher.

You’ll be charged $25 a month unless you have one of the following:

  • A combined total of $5,000 in your Spend account and up to seven other PNC consumer accounts
  • A $25,000 combined monthly average across all your PNC or PNCI investment accounts
  • $5,000 in monthly direct deposits to your Spend account during each statement period

The variable interest rate you can earn on money parked in your Reserve account can get a bump if you either make a combo of five debit card purchases or credit card transactions or have $5,000 in qualifying direct deposits to your Spend account in a given month.

If you set up a direct deposit with a minimum of $5,000, you can also get a $300 bonus. Your direct deposit will need to be made within 60 days of opening your account, and you’ll receive your bonus in your account within 60 to 90 days.

With a Virtual Wallet With Performance Select, you won’t be charged any ATM fees whatsoever for both in-network and out-of-network ATMs. As for ATM surcharges from the other financial institutions, PNC will reimburse you up to $20 in fees for a given statement period.

There’s also an overdraft fee of $36 per item, with a cap at four transactions per day.

Virtual Wallet Student

PNC’s Virtual Wallet Studentcomes with a handful of attractive features. You can earn a bit of interest in some of the accounts. There is no monthly maintenance fee, and you get reimbursed for the first two fees from non-network ATMs in a given monthly statement period. You also get one courtesy refund on fees the first time you overdraft for a returned item.

Virtual Wallet Student account holders also get one free wire transfer per statement period on their Spend account. As far as surcharges go, you get reimbursed for $5 for non-network fees. Unlike the other Virtual Wallet products, there is no sign-up bonus.

To be eligible for a Virtual Wallet Student account, you’ll need to show proof that you’re currently enrolled in a qualified educational institution. After six years your student account will automatically kick over to a regular Virtual Wallet, at which point standard fees and eligibility rules apply.

Fixed Rate CDs

Depending on where you live, PNC might offer Certificates of Deposits (CDs). By committing to leaving your money in a CD for a period of time, you could earn a higher interest rate than in a savings or money market account. Usually, how it works is that the longer you park your money in a CD, the higher the rate. There are also different minimum amounts required to open a CD.

The terms range anywhere from 7 days to 10 years. PNC's Fixed Rate CD minimum is $1,000.

PNC's standard early withdrawal penalties are as follows:

  • If you withdrawal less than three months in, you'll get dinged the amount of interest that you would've earned if you left your money for the full term of the CD;
  • If you make an early withdrawal from three months to a year, the penalty will be three months of interest earned on the amount you take out;
  • And if you make a withdrawal after a year or more, you'll be charged six months' interest on the amount withdrawn.

Ready Access CDs

If you're on the fence about locking in your money with a CD, you might want to consider PNC's Ready Access CD. You're only required to commit for 7 days; after that, you're free to access your funds. Standard terms are 3 and 12 months. Once your CD matures, it'll be automatically renewed.

Credit Cards

PNC Bank offers a small handful of credit cards, including a cashback card and a traveler’s card:

  • PNC Cash Rewards Visa Credit Card
  • PNC Core Visa Credit Card
  • PNC Points Visa Credit Card
  • PNC Premier Traveler Visa Signature Credit Card

PNC Customer Service

There are a number of ways you can get support from PNC. You can visit one of its brick-and-mortar locations, check out its FAQ page, or send customer service a tweet at @PNCBank_Help. Representatives are available by telephone seven days a week. You can reach a representative at 1-888-762-2265 weekdays, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, and weekends, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

PNC has a handful of mobile banking apps available on both iOS and Android devices. With the apps, you can check your account balances, pay bills, transfer money and deposit checks directly from your mobile device. The apps have outstanding ratings, and the PNC Mobile Banking app is currently ranked #55 for all Finance apps on iOS, with a 4.8-star rating.

How to Bank With PNC

To open a virtual account, you can apply online. If you want a stand-alone checking or savings account, you’ll have to give PNC a call and open an account over the phone.

Verdict

Banking with PNC can be a bit confusing. While you can get a stand-alone checking or savings account, there’s no information online about how to open one. You'll want to spend some time doing your homework before opening an account. Consider combing through the details on the website or speaking to a customer rep to get your questions answered. If you find PNC’s Virtual Wallet products appealing and meet the criteria to get the monthly maintenance fee dropped, it could be worth your while to open an account. Also, if you prefer to bank with a large financial institution with a host of offerings, it might be right for you.

ATM malfunction takes Avondale man's $1,300 in cash

Most of us use ATMs to withdraw cash, but some people — such as gig workers or restaurant workers who rely on tips — often use ATMs to make cash deposits.

But did you ever wonder if there is any risk to that? One Avondale man said he just found out how risky it can be.

Eric Morton said he's out a large amount of money after what he believes was an ATM malfunction.

"I walked into the ATM kiosk and put my card in," he said, pointing to PNC's free-standing ATM kiosk on Linn Street in Cincinnati's West End.

He said he then deposited $1,300 cash, mostly in $20 bills, into the ATM's cash slot.

"I heard it counting the money, counting the money," he said. "But as it was processing, an error hits the screen."

Confused, he reinserted his card and checked his account.

"I then follow up, and check my account, thinking maybe the money is in there," he said. "But it was not in there."

His account showed no deposit.

No answers from bank security department

Morton owns a courier company and said he frequently deposits cash, but he said when he called the bank's security department, he claims the agent questioned whether he was telling the truth.

"So I feel like I am defending myself more than you are trying to help me," he said. "I am trying to find out where my $1,300 went, and no one can tell me anything."

Morton said he's not asking the bank to take him at his word; he's just asking the bank to look at the footage from the camera on the machine and the two bubble cameras around the ATM.

"That's all I have been asking for," he said. "Check the camera footage."

So, don't let this happen to you. When depositing cash, Bankrate.com says:

  • Use an ATM at a physical bank that is frequently checked, not a freestanding one with no bank nearby.
  • Don't deposit cash to an out-of-network ATM where they would not have your account information if something goes wrong.
  • Consider using a live teller if it's a very large amount of cash.

We sent Morton's case to PNC, which promised to do a full investigation in the coming days (see full statement below).

Meantime, Morton said he will never again do an after-hours cash deposit.

As always, don't waste your money.

We have escalated Mr. Morton's claim to our Client Relations group who will look into it and will contact him directly to discuss it further.

If a customer suspects an ATM has malfunctioned, we encourage them to contact their local branch or our Customer Care Center as soon as possible to file a claim. The bank will conduct a full investigation and offer a resolution within 10 business days.

ATMs are designed to offer convenience to customers whenever they are able to bank. ATMs can accept up to 50 bills at a time for deposits. Before finalizing a transaction, customers are given the option to confirm or reject the amount of the transaction. Customers may always come into their nearest branch if they prefer to make their deposits with a banker.
