Valley View Community Food Bank Facing Unprecedented Demand for Help

Valley View Community Food Bank (VVCFB), headquartered at 10771 West Peoria Avenue in Sun City, is mobilizing to answer as many requests for help as possible. Jesse Ramirez, founder and president of the non-profit organization, says that in one day he received more than 160 calls on his emergency phone from people desperate for assistance. The food bank is seeing as many as 500 clients per day, many of them who have never asked for help before. Food counselors and other agencies are also turning to VVCFB for help.
With the sudden cancellation of school, and the shuttering of many businesses for an unknown length of time, many people are scrambling to provide basic survival necessities for children, grandchildren, and themselves.
Jesse Ramirez states, “We are in need of more donations, especially food, personal hygiene items, and cleaning and sanitation supplies.”
He explains that the cost of staple food items such as rice and beans – if these items can even be acquired right now – have doubled and tripled. So monetary donations to facilitate the purchase of needed resources is extremely helpful. Particularly sought after are such essentials as items to make soup, canned tomatoes, and fresh produce. Grocers are not supplying produce because of the increased volume of buying being experienced now in retail establishments.

In addition, volunteers are needed to take the place of regular volunteers who cannot assist in the food bank at this time because of their increased risk of contracting the virus or exposing a vulnerable family member. Volunteers are needed to help prepare food boxes. Volunteers are also needed to deliver boxes to homebound seniors in the Sun Cities. (Deliveries can be made only in the Sun Cities for now.)
Jesse Ramirez says, “All health and safety protocols are being observed, and we are sanitizing three times a day. We have purchased gloves, face masks, and hand sanitizers. We are taking every precaution to keep our volunteers, employees, and clients safe.”
He adds, “In my decades in food banking, I have never seen anything more disturbing. People are crying and are so afraid of the future. We have to find ways to help each other. We are all in this together, and together is the only way to address this historic crisis.”

PHOENIX – Hunger in America is on the rise, putting more pressure on food banks already struggling to keep up with the unprecedented need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Mary’s Food Bank, which has been feeding families for more than five decades, has seen the need soar over the past several months, spokesman Jerry Brown said. A potent combination of lost jobs and health and safety issues – all springing from the contagion – have led to record distributions of 10 million pounds of food per month in late 2020.

“We want to try to make sure that people during this time are at least able to have access to healthy foods and to keep their families going, especially with so many of them still not working, or at least not working to full capacity,” Brown said.

Food banks in the U.S. distribute more than 86 million meals each year, according to feeding america.org. But food insecurity in the U.S. is exacerbated in the pandemic.

Feeding America estimated losses in the battle to fight food insecurity for Arizona’s children, with the percentage of Arizona children who were food insecure expected to jump from 19% in 2018 to nearly 29% in 2020.

Brown noted there are several food banks in Arizona, including three Feeding America food banks, adding, “There’s also a lot of other people out there that are doing this work as well.”

Brown, who said working to provide a vital need invigorates him, recently discussed how the food bank has expanded and adapted its services during a pandemic, how people who never needed St. Mary’s help now are calling on it for donations, as well as how the demand for volunteers has become acute.

How would you describe the past year?

The impact in the community and the need for food has skyrocketed here in Arizona.

We’ve been around for 53 years, and we have never seen a year like 2020 when it comes to the amount of food that we distributed and the ways that we have had to come up with to distribute that food. We averaged 10 million pounds a month distributed.

What was that experience like?

I don’t really know how to explain or describe it. Literally everything we’ve had to do at the food bank underwent an entire transformation. We couldn’t do everything, anything the way that we had done it before, we had to add all kinds of safety protocols.

We had to get food to people in different areas. We went from distributing the food at the food bank to distributing them in the parking lots of sports stadiums. And (there was) expanding our mobile pantries just to try to get food out to folks who need it. The amount of people that came to the food bank tripled in just 30 days.

About March of last year, we were seeing about 600 people across the street a day at our main location. We have hundreds of them (from) across the Valley in this one particular location that jumped to 1,500 people in just a few weeks. We had to really pull together.

At the same time that we did, the volunteers that we rely on to help us distribute that food almost disappeared – from folks who are afraid to come and people who were part of companies or part of conventions that weren’t coming to Arizona anymore. We had to come up with an entirely new way to distribute that food. This is done through walkups, drive-thrus and food delivery.

When you come to the food bank for food, your windows are rolled up, you never leave your car, it’s an entire noncontact situation. You pop the trunk on your car, the food is loaded into the truck. It’s just like you’re driving down the street to anything else. You don’t have to put yourself at risk.

What’s a situation that broke your heart?

(One woman) had worked at the same company for 25 years – thought she was going to retire from there after working for another 20 years. And she was furloughed for a few months – told that they would bring her back when things improved. She went through all of her savings during that time that she was furloughed, thinking that she would get her job back and be able to rebuild.

She got the call to come back and a week before she was expected to go back to work, the company closed the stores for good. She did not have a job that she thought she would have for the next 20 years. As we were loading food into the back of a car, she had resumes in the back seat of her car, trying to find a new job. You just realize the incredible impact this has had on people who never thought that they would be in this situation.

People who had been people who donated to the food bank or spent time volunteering at the food bank were now on the other side of the line receiving the food.

Does St. Mary’s need more volunteers?

As you’re well aware, the state of Arizona has one of the highest incidences of COVID in the country, if not the world. Again, the number of people that would come to the food bank started to tick up again. We did have a respite, during the summer; June, July and August.

We’re definitely 25 to 30% more than we had seen the previous year, but not on the same scale that we had seen through the spring months and allowed us to kind of catch our breath, and get ready for the next surge. Sure enough, that surge came during the holiday season. The good news is we’ve been able to provide food for every family that is struggling.

The reason that we’ve been able to do that is because the people of Phoenix and the people of Arizona have been so generous when it comes to the food bank – understanding that this is something that they need to help with, understanding that there are people that they know, or people in their family, even, that need the food bank’s help right now. Is the government still assisting St. Mary’s?

We still have the National Guard here, and they are distributing food for us. In fact, they were building emergency food boxes this morning, because the number of volunteers – it had picked up during the holidays – but it’s now dropped down again during January, so we didn’t have enough people to go through boxes. The guard was helping us out.

We’ve also received financial assistance, both from the federal government and from the state of Arizona, to help us. One of the things that we’ve instituted with that money is a delivery service for our seniors. Our folks who can’t leave the house are folks who are afraid to come to the food bank. They haven’t received their vaccinations yet, they want to make sure that they stay safe.

It was a $600,000 grant that was given by the state of Arizona, and we’ve been able to institute that. We’ve jumped the number of people that we deliver food to from about 1,100 a month to about 4,000 a month, with an eye towards increasing that total until everyone gets vaccinated. This is a very dangerous time, especially for our seniors, and we want to make sure that they’re able to receive the food they need without risking themselves.

If you have somebody who can take you to the food bank, somebody who can pick up food for you, we would much rather use that ability. But if you have no other choice,
we do have an option now where we can get the food to you.

What can people do to help the food bank – donate time, money and food?

Volunteers. Again, we’re serving 1,000 families a day. That means we need a box of food for 4,000 people a day. This is why volunteers are very important. We have two volunteer shifts a day. One starts at 9 a.m. and one starts at 1 p.m.; they last about 90 minutes, and you will box hundreds, if not thousands, of emergency food boxes.

During that time, we pump out a lot of rock and roll music. It’s a very safe environment. All of our volunteers have their temperature checked, wear their masks and gloves, they’re 6 feet apart.

It may not be the same raucous atmosphere that we normally have for an emergency food boxing event. But you can certainly still feel the happiness of folks wanting to help out, and we do it in a very safe manner.

If you have some citrus on your backyard trees, you can bring those. Grapefruits, those oranges, the things that you don’t want to have around your house, a lot of these trees are very abundant.

What preparations do you have for this year compared to last year?

We have learned how to do things in a new way, in a more efficient way and at a much more larger scale. We expect to continue that until we’re in a place, hopefully, by the middle to late part of the summer, where things get more back to normal.

The Cardinals and State Farm are partnering on a historic initiative to address a pressing local need arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of people seeking assistance from local food banks has more than doubled as a result of this unparalleled crisis. Unfortunately, the number of donations to them has decreased just as dramatically.

As part of their ongoing commitment to improve the community, State Farm and the Cardinals are tackling the issue by donating over one million meals that will be distributed to five non-profit organizations throughout the Valley. The five groups involved in this "Million Meal" donation are:

  •      St. Vincent DePaul
  •      United Food Bank
  •      Phoenix Rescue Mission
  •      Midwest Food Bank

"We are so fortunate to have the ability to team up with the Cardinals and help these organizations," Denise Hardin, Senior Vice President at State Farm's Phoenix Hub, said in a press release. "The current situation with the pandemic has been difficult for many people around the world and we are glad we can make an impact in our community while still practicing social distancing."

State Farm employees recently participated in a nationwide Peanut Butter Drive, where they collected more than 32,500 pounds of peanut butter and donated them to local food banks in each of their hubs. In 2019, employees collected more than 21,000 pounds.

"We're incredibly grateful to State Farm for the opportunity to work with them on this critically important initiative," Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said. "Both of our organizations place community involvement among our highest priorities and recognize the impact that we can make, particularly in extraordinary times like now. The non-profit groups receiving these meals do tremendous work and we are honored to assist them in this way."

This initiative is the latest undertaken by the team to assist those impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. On March 24, the Cardinals made a $1 million donation to the Arizona Coronavirus Relief Fund. Shortly thereafter, the team organized three major blood drives at State Farm Stadium to meet the dire need to replenish the Valley's dwindling blood supply.

That is in addition to the efforts of individual players like wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who made a donation of $150,000 to the state's Coronavirus Relief Fund, and All-Pro linebacker Chandler Jones, who is providing 150,000 meals to food banks in Arizona as well as his hometown in upstate New York.

Food Bank in Phoenix, Arizona

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization located in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1967 by John van Hengel, St. Mary's was the first modern organization to operate using the food bank model, which spread throughout U.S. and the rest of the world. Today, St. Mary's is recognized as the world's first food bank.[1]

Since its creation, St. Mary's has expanded its operations to nine of Arizona's fifteen counties,[1] distributing millions of pounds of food to the hungry each year. St. Mary's also operates its own food pantry, allowing people to get food directly from the warehouse. The organization additionally offers specialized programs apart from food banking, including after-school programs for children and career training for adults.

St. Mary's is a member of Feeding America, a network of hunger-relief organizations also founded by van Hengel with the purpose of providing food to people across the country.[2]

Foundation and history[edit]

Prior to founding St. Mary's Food Bank, John van Hengel lived in Phoenix and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen. Van Hengel spent much of his time collecting food to supply the soup kitchen and donating the surplus to the homeless throughout the city. Eventually, he was introduced to a struggling mother of ten who used the food thrown out by grocery stores to feed her children. She expressed her desire for a place where unwanted food could be collected and given to the hungry, much like a bank collects and distributes money. After searching through dumpsters and noting that much of the discarded food was still edible, van Hengel decided to establish a "food bank" where unwanted food would be gathered in large quantities. St. Mary's Basilica of Phoenix loaned van Hengel $3,000 and provided him with an abandoned bakery to operate out of. With that, St. Mary's Food Bank was founded in 1967 and named after the basilica in honor of their contribution.[3][4]

St. Mary's developed partnerships with grocery stores, food producers, and social welfare organizations throughout Phoenix. By acting as a clearinghouse for these partner organizations, St. Mary's distributed over 250,000 lb (120 short tons) of food in its first year. That number increased to "about a million pounds of food" by the end of 1968, according to van Hengel.[5] With limited financial resources, St. Mary's relied heavily on volunteers to operate, and focused on obtaining food rather than monetary donations. Guided by the motto "the poor we shall always have with us, but why the hungry?," St. Mary's continued to attract more volunteers and partner agencies to its mission, allowing the food bank to expand its reach through Phoenix and much of Arizona.[6]

By 1975, the concept of food banking had gained popularity in other parts of the United States. Van Hengel was offered a federal grant to help spread the food banking concept across the country and left St. Mary's to form the organization known today as Feeding America. He returned to St. Mary's in 1982, while also working as a consultant for new food bank operations as the concept spread worldwide.[6]

St. Mary's continued operating in Arizona using the same model that was being adopted by organizations across the world. Today, St. Mary's collects and distributes meals to more than 600 agencies statewide. The organization estimates that it will provide over 90 million meals to Arizonans in 2019, with the goal of providing 100 million meals to those in need by 2021.[7]

Food distribution[edit]

St. Mary's has over 600 partner agencies in nine different Arizona counties, including homeless shelters, food pantries, and dining halls. St. Mary's still operates using the traditional "warehouse" model of food banking, supplying their partner agencies with donated food.

In addition to assuming the role of a traditional food bank, St. Mary's also runs its own food pantry, allowing people to get food directly from their warehouses. St. Mary's frequently offers "mobile" food pantries – semi trucks filled with food products – in various locations throughout Arizona. These mobile pantries normally run on regular schedules, but they have also been dispatched for special occasions.[8] During the 2018–19 United States federal government shutdown, for example, St. Mary's held a mobile food pantry to provide food for local TSA employees who were working without pay.[9]

Partnerships and support[edit]

Through their Hunger Heroes program,[10] St. Mary's has partnered with a wide variety of local and global companies who donate food, funding, and volunteers to the food bank. According to St. Mary's, it costs one dollar to provide seven meals for a single person, making fundraising a powerful tool in providing assistance to Arizonans.[11]

Many of St. Mary's partners also participate in special campaigns. The annual "Fight Hunger. Spark Change" is one such campaign, where Walmart associates work with local volunteers to distribute meals from mobile food pantries across the state. Additionally, Walmart and Sam's Club donate a predetermined amount of money to St. Mary's when customers buy select items in stores. In the 2018 campaign, St. Mary's received enough money to distribute 1.67 million meals across Arizona.[12][13]

Children's feeding programs[edit]

Roughly one-in-four children in Arizona struggle with hunger. As of 2015[update] the state was ranked the fifth-worst in the U.S. for food insecurity.[14][15] To combat this, St. Mary's has created programs[16] to provide nutritious meals for children.[17]

The Kids Cafe is an after-school program where children can receive free meals while engaged in tutoring or recreational activities. This program provides roughly 6,000 meals daily to over 130 locations in Arizona. The program is also available during the summer, when children don't have access to the free meals they might receive at school.

The Backpack Program partners with schools and community centers to distribute bags packed with a weekend's supply of food. These bags are given to children once a week with the goal of helping their entire family. Each bag contains enough food to supply three meals for a family of four. St. Mary's partners with over 100 schools and community centers to distribute 3,000 backpacks per week.

The Community Kitchen is a 12-week course where adults learn to work in the food-service industry while also developing career and professional skills.[18] The program is intended to help those with barriers to employment develop the skills to become more self-sufficient, providing them with job placement support upon completing the course.

Arizona charitable tax credit[edit]

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is classified as a "qualifying charitable organization" by the Arizona Department of Revenue, meaning that residents can receive a tax credit for donations up to $800.[19]

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization located in Phoenix, Arizona.
