Plumber Finds Cash and Checks in Joel Osteen’s Megachurch Walls

Nearly 500 envelopes stuffed with cash and cheques were discovered behind a wall at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, recently.

The money was discovered by a hired plumber who went onto a local morning radio show on November 10 to say he had discovered it while working at the megachurch.

“We removed the tiling because there was a loose toilet in the wall,” the plumber told KILT-FM radio. “I took some insulation away to remove the toilet, and about 500 envelopes fell out of the wall, and I was like ‘Oh, wow!'” “I went ahead and contacted the on-site maintenance supervisor, and I turned everything in,” the plumber explained.

The entire quantity of cash discovered behind the wall has not been revealed. However, after the plumber reported his findings to the Houston Police Department (HPD), it was discovered that the envelopes were perhaps connected to a seven-year-old cold case.

In a daring heist in 2014, $600,000 was stolen from the Lakewood Church. A safe was robbed of a mixture of monetary assets, including $200,000 in cash and $400,000 in cheques, as well as secure credit card information from church members.

A $25,000 reward was given at the time by Crime Stoppers Houston for information leading to an arrest, however the case remains unsolved.

The robbery made national headlines because the megachurch is one of the largest in the country, with over 50,000 people attending weekly services, according to reports. It is led by pastor Joel Osteen, one of the country’s most well-known televangelists, who is most known for controversially closing his church to outsiders following Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

While it may appear that the envelopes contain some or all of the money stolen in 2014, the HPD has not established that the two events are connected. A representative from Lakewood Church would only confirm that the money had been discovered behind the wall.

The announcers rhetorically wondered whether the buried money would lead to new answers about what transpired during the robbery as the narrative unfolded on the morning radio.

“You don’t want to know what occurred, do you?” This is a condensed version of the information.

    More News

This stoppage began 30 days after Atlanta’s World Series win capped a complete season following a pandemic-shortened 2020 played in empty ballparks.

The lockout’s immediate impacts were a memo from MLB to clubs freezing signings, the cancellation of next week's annual winter meetings in Orlando, Florida, and banishing players from team workout facilities and weight rooms while perhaps chilling ticket sales for 2022.

The union demanded change following anger over a declining average salary, middle-class players forced out by teams concentrating payroll on the wealthy and veterans jettisoned in favor of lower-paid youth, especially among clubs tearing down their rosters to rebuild.

“As players we see major problems with it,” New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer said of the 2016 agreement. “First and foremost, we see a competition problem and how teams are behaving because of certain rules that are within that, and adjustments have to be made because of that in order to bring out the competition.”

Eleven weeks remain until pitchers and catchers are to report for spring training on Feb. 16, leaving about 70 days to reach a deal allowing for an on-time start. Opening day is set for March 31, and a minimum of three weeks of organized workouts have been required in the past.

Management, intent on preserving salary restraints gained in recent decades, rejected the union’s requests for what teams regarded as significant alterations to the sport’s economic structure, including lowering service time needed for free agency and salary arbitration.

“We offered to establish a minimum payroll for all clubs to meet for the first time in baseball history; to allow the majority of players to reach free agency earlier through an age-based system that would eliminate any claims of service time manipulation; and to increase compensation for all young players,” Manfred wrote. “When negotiations lacked momentum, we tried to create some by offering to accept the universal designated hitter, to create a new draft system using a lottery similar to other leagues."

Many clubs scrambled to add players ahead of the lockout, committing to more than $1.9 billion in new contracts — including a one-day record of more than $1.4 billion Wednesday.

Two of the eight members of the union’s executive subcommittee signed big deals: Texas infielder Marcus Semien ($175 million) and Scherzer ($130 million).

“This is actually kind of fun,” Scherzer said. “I’m a fan of the game, and to watch everybody sign right now, to actually see teams competing in this kind of timely fashion, it’s been refreshing because we’ve seen freezes for the past several offseasons.”

No player remains active from the 232-day strike that cut short the 1994 season, led to the first cancellation of the World Series in 90 years and caused the following season to start late.

The average salary dropped from $1.17 million before the strike to $1.11 million but then resumed its seemingly inexorable rise. It peaked at just under $4.1 million in 2017, the first season of the latest CBA, but likely will fall to about $3.7 million when this year’s final figures are calculated.

That money is concentrated heavily at the top of the salary structure. Among approximately 1,955 players who signed major league contracts at any point going into the regular season’s final month, 112 had earned $10 million or more this year as of Aug. 31, of which 40 made at least $20 million, including prorated shares of signing bonuses.

There were 1,397 earning under $1 million, of which 1,271 were at $600,000 or less and 332 under $100,000, a group of younger players who shuttle back and forth to the minors.

A union statement claimed the lockout “was specifically calculated to pressure players into relinquishing rights and benefits, and abandoning good-faith bargaining proposals that will benefit not just players, but the game and industry as a whole. ... We have been here before, and players have risen to the occassion time and again — guided by a solidarity that has been forged over generations."

The union has withheld licensing money, as it usually does going into bargaining; cash, U.S. Treasury securities and investments totaled $178.5 million last Dec. 31, according to a financial disclosure form filed with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Some player agents have speculated that management’s credit lines already may be pressured following income deprivation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but the clubs’ finances are more opaque publicly than that of the union, making it difficult to ascertain comparative financial strength to withstand a lengthy work stoppage.

Manfred succeeded Bud Selig as commissioner in 2015 following a quarter-century as an MLB labor negotiator. He was unusually critical publicly of the union's stance.

“They never wavered from collectively the most extreme set of proposals in their history,” he said, “including significant cuts to the revenue-sharing system, a weakening of the competitive balance tax, and shortening the period of time that players play for their teams. All of these changes would make our game less competitive.”

Mystery as plumber finds 3,000 cash-filled envelopes behind WALL at Joel Osteen’s Megachurch 7 years after $600k theft

ENVELOPES full of cash and checks were mysteriously discovered behind a bathroom wall inside the Texas church of celebrity televangelist Joel Osteen by a plumber as he carried out repairs on a toilet.

The strange find, which was made at Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston on November 10, was anonymously recounted by the plumber to 100.3 The Bull, a morning radio show in the city.

The discovery was made on Nov. 10 by a plumber fixing a toilet

3

“There was a loose toilet in the wall, and we removed the tile,” the caller said. "We went to go remove the toilet, and I moved some insulation away and about 500 envelopes fell out of the wall, and I was like ‘Oh wow!’”

The plumber went on to say that around 3,000 envelopes stuffed with cash were recovered in total.

“I went ahead and contacted the maintenance supervisor that was there, and I turned it all in,” he added.

It's unclear how much money was contained inside the envelopes.

In a statement, a representative for Lakewood Church acknowledged last month's discovery.

"Recently, while repair work was being done at Lakewood Church, an undisclosed amount of cash and checks were found," the statement read.

"Lakewood immediately notified the Houston Police Department and is assisting them with their investigation."

UNSOLVED 2014 THEFT

The bizarre discovery comes around seven years after $600,000 in checks and cash vanished from the church's safe in March 2014.

According to the Houston Chronicle, no arrests were made in the case and an investigation into the theft remains ongoing.

In addition to the checks and cash, credit card information was also lifted from the safe.

Victor Senties, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department, said $200,000 of the $600,000 stolen was in cash, and the remainder of the sum was comprised of checks.

The missing cash was discovered by an unnamed church employee. Few details were shared about the robbery.

In a statement to its 40,000 members at the time, Lakewood encouraged anyone who made contributions to the church on March 8 and 9 to monitor their bank and credit card accounts closely for fraudulent charges.

"We were heartbroken to learn today that funds were stolen from the church over the weekend," the 2014 statement read.

"The funds were fully insured, and we are working with our insurance company to restore the stolen funds to the church."

Lakewood Church and its pastor Joel Osteen have not returned a request for comment from The Sun.

'UNBELIEVABLE'

Police have not yet confirmed whether the cash and checks found on November 10 were the same as those reported missing from the safe seven years ago.

George Lindsey, co-host of the Morning Bullpen, called the plumber's discovery "unbelievable" in a broadcast on Thursday.

“It was just unbelievable!” Lindsey reiterated. "The things he was telling us that they found in the walls.

“We were like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Lindsey said of the caller. “So, then he relayed to us that in 2014 there was a big story about money being stolen from Lakewood Church that they never recovered.”

The radio host said the discovery raises a number of questions.

He continued: "Don’t you want to know what happened, I mean they stole the money, but they didn’t get it out of the wall. Did they have an accident, you know what I mean? It’s like, why did they never go back? If it’s that money, why did they never go back?"

At the time of the theft, Crime Stoppers of Houston offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

But in a statement to KPRC2, Crime Stoppers of Houston said the reward was only for information leading to a suspect’s arrest.

In order to receive the reward, the tipster would need to contact Crime Stoppers to provide identifying information on the suspected thief.

With seven years having passed since, Crime Stoppers of Houston said the statute of limitations has expired and the plumber who made the discovery will not receive any reward money.

The Houston Police Department has been conducted for further comment.

The church boasts a following of around 43,000 people

With seven years having passed since, Crime Stoppers of Houston said the statute of limitations has expired and the plumber who made the discovery will houston police department credit union receive any reward money.

The Houston Police Department has been conducted for further comment.

The church boasts a following of around 43,000 people
