What Is a Pending Transaction?

Whenever you swipe your debit or credit card, the merchant issues a charge to your card. This charge then goes through a process that cycles among payment networks, your bank, and the merchant itself. All of these steps take time to process and clear. While your transaction is making its way through the system, it remains pending. Once your card issuer has transferred the funds to the merchant on your behalf, the transaction finalizes and posts to your account. It’s a well-oiled system, and most of the time you won’t see any unexpected charges pending in your account.

Preauthorization Charges 

Sometimes you’ll see a pending transaction on your account that’s larger than a purchase you’ve made (or intend to make). This can occur when you purchase gas or rent a hotel room, for instance. Gas stations may place a large pending transaction on your account to accommodate an extra-large fill-up. When the transaction posts, your account will be charged for the actual amount of gas you bought. Upon check-in, hotels will often collect a deposit to cover any incidental charges or damage to the hotel room. After you leave, the hotel will refund your deposit less the charges you’ve incurred. If you don’t have any additional charges, the entire pending transaction will simply fade away.

Several U.S. states have sought to add protections against extra-large pending transactions. Tennessee’s law, for example, requires merchants to notify consumers of debit card holds in excess of 25% of the actual purchase, or $50, whichever is greater.

Pending Transactions and Debit Cards

Using a debit card instead of a credit card for purchases that lead to holds can be a risky proposition. That’s because a pending transaction on a credit card will simply limit your available credit balance. A pending transaction on your debit card, however, will limit access to the actual funds in your account for as long as it takes the transaction to disappear. This can be problematic if you have bills to pay and the withheld amount still hasn’t been released back to you.

Pending Transactions and PayPal

Pending transactions with PayPal can also occur, just like debit or credit cards. However, PayPal has another aspect to its transactions: sending payments via PayPal’s system. If you’ve sent a payment to a friend or merchant, the transaction may appear as pending in your PayPal account. Depending on the situation, you may be able to change or cancel the payment before it’s claimed. 

How To Cancel a Pending Credit Card or Debit Card Transaction

Sometimes you may want to cancel a pending transaction as quickly as possible. This can be the case if the hold is placed on your debit card and, thus, your bank account. Unfortunately, it’s not very easy to do—your card issuer has no ability to cancel or otherwise alter the transaction until it’s been finalized. If you want to eliminate the transaction before then, contact the merchant who placed the charge. Ask them to contact your card issuer and reverse the transaction. The merchant has the ability to ask for the hold to be released.

If you see a pending transaction that you know you didn’t make—such as a fraudulent purchase—contact your card issuer immediately. They can work with you to monitor the transaction, protect your privacy, and reduce your liability if the charge eventually posts.

How To Cancel a Pending PayPal Transaction

If you’ve sent funds to someone and see a pending transaction within your account, this can be for one of two reasons. First, you may have sent money to someone whose phone number or email address isn’t associated with a verified PayPal account. If this happens, you can cancel your payment via the “Activity” section of your account. 

Otherwise, you may have sent funds to a merchant who doesn’t accept payments automatically. This simply means that the merchant will need to accept or deny your payment. Once you’ve sent the funds to this type of merchant, you won’t be able to cancel this transaction.

How To Dispute a Posted Credit Card or Debit Transaction

If an erroneous pending charge you’ve noticed eventually posts as a transaction, don’t worry. It’s easier to dispute a posted transaction than a pending one. As a part of the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA), banks are required to acknowledge a disputed transaction no more than 30 days after they receive your complaint. They must then resolve it within two billing cycles, which may not exceed 90 days from the date of your complaint.

Fortunately, many banks will allow you to dispute a charge online, which can be simpler than sending a complaint letter.

How do I dispute a debit card transaction?

Make sure it's not fraud - If a transaction on your bank account doesn't look quite right and you confirmed it wasn't made by you or another authorized user on your account—contact us immediately by calling 1-888-464-0727. Here are some common situations where a transaction can be disputed:

  • You canceled a service and you’re still being charged for it.

What Is A Credit Card Chargeback?

As a user of credit cards or other banking products, your ability to issue a chargeback is one of the most important tools you have to resolve billing disputes and undo fraud. But the term may be foreign to you if you’ve never had to do it. Here’s what you need to know.

What is a chargeback?

A chargeback is an action taken by a bank to reverse electronic payments. It involves reversing a payment and triggering a dispute resolution process. Generally, chargebacks occur between a merchant and a credit card issuing bank or a consumer. However chargebacks are sometimes issued against consumers, for example in the case of an erroneous ATM deposit. Usually chargebacks are used to reverse a payment in the case of a billing error, unauthorized credit card use or failure to deliver a product or service.

Often this term is used by savvy credit card issuers to refer to the entire process of disputing a credit card charge, receiving an account credit and having the disputed amount taken back from the merchant.

When should you use a chargeback?

The Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory bodies mandate a fair amount of protection to consumers using credit cards. Among other protections, you have the rights to accurate billing, protection from unauthorized charges and the right to dispute charges for goods or services that are different than described. In addition to regulatory protections, your bank, credit card issuer or card association may provide you with additional rights.

Most often, chargebacks are issued for one of the following reasons:

  • Fraud or unauthorized use—Someone uses your card without your authorization to purchase goods or services.
  • Goods or services were not as described—Goods or services provided were materially different than they were described or agreed to.
  • Goods or services not delivered—You paid for something, but never received it or you paid for a service that was never provided.
  • Return credit not processed—You returned an item or canceled a service within a merchant’s return policy and never received credit for the return.
  • A recurring billing was not stopped—A subscription service continued to be billed after you canceled it.
  • Incorrect amount—The amount charged was incorrect.

Generally, chargeback abilities are limited to 120 days from the date of purchase and are not meant as a way to protect against loss, damage or theft after a product has been delivered or as an extended return protection or warranty benefit. Fortunately, many credit cards offer these additional protection for consumers. Several credit cards offer loss, damage, theft or return protection as part of their benefits and many credit cards offer extended warranty protection.

How do you submit a chargeback?

To dispute a charge and submit a chargeback, you must identify the transaction in question and work with your credit card issuer to initiate the process. Regardless of how you initiate your chargeback request, your bank will walk you through providing the information they require.

Often the easiest way to submit a chargeback request is through your bank’s website. Many larger banks will allow you to initiate or process most disputes entirely online. Usually, you will have the ability to dispute a charge through the web page listing all of your transactions. If you can not find this easily, search the bank’s online help pages for “Dispute a charge” or “Chargeback.” While many chargebacks can be initiated online, your bank may require a phone call for large chargebacks or for chargebacks requiring additional documentation.

If submitting your chargerback request online is not an option, you can call your bank via the phone number on the back of your credit card or customer services phone number. Some banks also offer an online customer service chat that can assist you. Depending on the nature of your chargeback request, the credit card company may request that you also submit supporting documentation via mail or through a form on their website.

Finally, you can always submit your chargerback request in writing to your credit card’s address for “Billing Inquiries.” Note that this address is usually different from the address where you send your credit card payments. Naturally, submitting a chargeback request by mail is likely to take longer than initiating the process online or by telephone, especially if you are required to submit supporting documentation.

What happens when you submit a chargeback?

After you have submitted your chargeback request, your bank will provide written confirmation of your request. Your bank will also either post a temporary credit to your account for the disputed amount or pause required payments and interest on the disputed amount.

Sometimes your credit card issuer will simply issue you an account credit for the amount you dispute. This happens most often with small purchases, where the overhead of contacting the merchant and investigating the chargeback would be far greater than the amount of the purchase.

Most often, after collecting your reason for disputing the charge and supporting documentation, your bank will submit your chargeback to the merchant. Your bank will provide the transaction information, your stated reason for requesting the chargeback and any supporting information that documents your claim. The merchant and their bank will then have a period of time, usually around 10 days, to respond to the bank’s inquiry

If the chargeback is either accepted or not disputed, your bank will notify you that your billing dispute is closed and will provide an account credit to offset the disputed charge. However, if the merchant responds that the charge is valid and provides documentation supporting their claim, your bank will evaluate the information that the merchant provided and determine whether to issue you a credit for the disputed charge. Once the bank makes its decision, it will provide that to you in writing along with an account credit if your dispute is successful.

If you disagree with the bank’s decision, you can submit a second chargeback before proceeding to your bank’s dispute resolution process, which usually includes arbitration.

What else do you need to know?

Often, the easiest way to resolve a billing dispute is directly with the merchant in question. If a product didn’t arrive, contacting the person or company you bought it from is often the best first step. This avenue will likely get you either a refund or a replacement product faster than filing a chargeback would. Likewise, if you believe that a credit card has been billed in error, contacting the merchant can often get a simple mistake resolved within a few days. Most banks will ask if you contacted the merchant directly prior to requesting a chargeback.

Second, your window to submit a chargeback is time-limited, so you should not delay in submitting a legitimate dispute. As an example, for most purchases using Mastercard, chargebacks must be submitted within 120 days of the purchase. The exact number of days you have to dispute a charge varies based on a number of factors, including what the charge is for, the card association and bank policies. Check with your credit card issuer.

Because chargebacks are not guaranteed, it is important to not use your chargeback ability as a replacement for monitoring your accounts for fraudulent use. If your credit card is lost or stolen, it is still important to report that immediately to your bank.

Finally, chargebacks are intended to resolve legitimate billing errors. In the last decade, with the rise in online shopping merchants have seen a corresponding increase in chargeback abuse. The industry has come to term this type of abuse “friendly fraud.” If you abuse chargebacks, you can expect that your bank will take action against you including closing your account. Fraudulent use of chargebacks also could have legal implications.

Bottom Line

The ability to resolve billing disputes by issuing chargebacks is one of the best reasons to use a credit card for your daily purchases. If something goes wrong—a product is not delivered, a service isn’t as described or your request to cancel a subscription remains ignored—chargebacks provide a consistent mechanism and process for you to resolve billing errors.

Knowing how and when to use chargebacks is one of the ways in which you can become a more savvy consumer and user of credit cards and financial products.

16 Sep Funny Business on your Credit Card? How to Dispute a Charge with Chase Bank!

Throughout the month I make it a habit to frequently login to my online credit card accounts to review activity. I prefer to review my accounts this way, rather than at the end of the month when my statement appears because I find it much easier to identify incorrect charges to my account earlier on. I typically make hundreds of transactions within a month and there is no way that I would be able to identify the legitimacy of one of these charges 30 days down the road!

I was recently reviewing some of my charges and noticed one specific charge to PNC Bank for $2,000.00. This is a big charge posted on my account and I was able to determine right away that it was related to the funding of a PNC Bank Checking Account a week or so back.

Since the charge was a hefty $2,000.00 I really wanted to confirm that those funds were actually received in my new PNC Checking Account. Unfortunately for me, they were nowhere to be found and my PNC account was showing a disappointing $0.00 balance across the screen.

I immediately dialed up PNC Bank to inquire and was told that the bank did not receive any funds and had no additional details to provide me.

At that point, my next course of action was to follow up with Chase, who suggested I either wait for the statement to close and follow up with PNC, or dispute the charge with Chase, who would then investigate the transaction on my behalf.

I chose to dispute the charge and followed the steps outlined below to ensure the $2,000 was removed from my bill.

Step Two – Review your statement, identify and select the charge that you want to dispute

Note: Consuming too many beers is not a legitimate reason to dispute your bar tab… but if you were erroneously charged for drinks you did not consume/authorize, then that CAN and should be disputed!

Step Six – Verify and submit your dispute!

Chase will work on your behalf to investigate and resolve the dispute, and in the meantime the charge will be temporarily credited to your account and you will pay no interest on the charge during the dispute period.

Chase will allow the merchant to respond to the dispute and will evaluate that response and determine the appropriate action to take regarding the disputed transaction (allow the charge to post or to deny the charge and reclaim the funds).

DO NOT dispute a legitimate transaction! Not only will it waste your time, Chase’s time, and the merchant’s time, but it is also considered FRAUD…

Final Thought

The ability to dispute a charge is a great example of the additional security and protection provided by credit cards and the companies that issue them. If you have charges on your credit card that you did not make/do not recognize or if the merchant did not not follow through on the transaction – take action! Whether you've scheduled an online payment or mailed a paper check, there may come a time or two where you need to stop the payment you initiated before it is successfully completed. Perhaps you've discovered that you put the wrong information on a check or you've received notification that the check never reached its intended destination. The stop payment feature also works to prevent fraud in the event that a check you wrote has been stolen.

Know About Fees First

What Is A Credit Card Chargeback?

As a user of credit cards or other banking products, your ability to issue a chargeback is one of the most important tools you have to resolve billing disputes and undo fraud. But the term may be foreign to you if you’ve never had to do it. Here’s what you need to know.

What is a chargeback?

A chargeback is an action taken by a bank to reverse electronic payments. It involves reversing a payment and triggering a dispute resolution process. Generally, chargebacks occur between a merchant and a credit card issuing bank or a consumer. However chargebacks are sometimes issued against consumers, for example in the case of an erroneous ATM deposit. Usually chargebacks are used to reverse a payment in the case of a billing error, unauthorized credit card use or failure to deliver a product or service.

Often this term is used by savvy credit card issuers to refer to the entire process of disputing a credit card charge, receiving an account credit and having the disputed amount taken back from the merchant.

When should you use a chargeback?

The Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory bodies mandate a fair amount of protection to consumers using credit cards. Among other protections, you have the rights to accurate billing, protection from unauthorized charges and the right to dispute charges for goods or services that are different than described. In addition to regulatory protections, your bank, credit card issuer or card association may provide you with additional rights.

Most often, chargebacks are issued for one of the following reasons:

  • Fraud or unauthorized use—Someone uses your card without your authorization to purchase goods dispute a charge online chase services.

Often the easiest way to submit a chargeback request is through your bank’s website. Many larger banks will allow you to initiate or process most disputes entirely online. Usually, you will have the ability to dispute a charge through the web page listing all of your transactions. If you can not find this easily, search the bank’s online help pages for “Dispute a dispute a charge online chase or “Chargeback.” While many chargebacks can be initiated online, your bank may require a phone call for large chargebacks or for chargebacks requiring additional documentation.

If submitting your chargerback request online is not an option, you can call your bank via the phone number on the back of your credit card or customer services phone number. Naturally, submitting a chargeback request by mail is likely to take longer than initiating the process online or by telephone, especially if you are required to submit supporting documentation.

What happens when you submit a chargeback?

After you have submitted your chargeback request, your bank will provide written confirmation of your request. Your bank will also either post a temporary credit to your account for the disputed amount or pause required payments and interest on the disputed amount.

Sometimes your credit card issuer will simply issue you an account credit for the amount you dispute. This happens most often with small purchases, where the overhead of contacting the merchant and investigating the chargeback would be far greater than the amount of the purchase.

Most often, after collecting your reason for disputing the charge and supporting documentation, your bank will submit your chargeback to the merchant. Your bank will provide the transaction information, your stated reason for requesting the chargeback and any supporting information that documents your claim. The merchant and their bank will then have a period of time, usually around 10 days, to respond to the bank’s inquiry

If the chargeback is either accepted or not disputed, your bank will notify you that your billing dispute is closed and will provide an account credit to offset the disputed charge. However, if the merchant responds that the charge is valid and provides documentation supporting their claim, your bank will evaluate the information that the merchant provided and determine whether to issue you a credit for the disputed charge. Once the bank makes its decision, it will provide that to you in writing along with an account credit if your dispute is successful.

Second, your window to submit a chargeback is time-limited, so you should not delay in submitting a legitimate dispute. As an example, for most purchases using Mastercard, chargebacks must be submitted within 120 days of the purchase. The exact number of days you have to dispute a charge varies based on a number of factors, including what the charge is for, the card association and bank policies. Check with your credit card issuer.

Because chargebacks are not guaranteed, it is important to not use your chargeback ability as a replacement for monitoring your accounts for fraudulent use. If your credit card is lost or stolen, it is still important to report that immediately to your bank.

Finally, chargebacks are intended to resolve legitimate billing errors. In the last decade, with the rise in online shopping merchants have seen a corresponding increase in chargeback abuse.
