Prosecutors charged two people with carrying out separate shoplifting raids on two Ulta Beauty stores over the weekend — thefts that netted them more than $13,000 in stolen merchandise, according to the allegations.

Around 12:30 Sunday, Jaheim Jackson and three women entered the Ulta store at 3015 North Clark in Lakeview, but there was a problem. Prosecutors said that Jackson wasn’t wearing his COVID mask properly, and an employee asked him to leave if he couldn’t put it over his face and mouth. He and the women left.

They all returned to the store within an hour and loaded baskets with merchandise from the fragrance department, prosecutors said. The group allegedly walked out with $8,500 worth of goods.

Police located a car bearing a license plate that a witness linked to the thieves about four hours later. They pulled it over. Jackson was driving it with all of the Ulta merchandise lying on the back seat, prosecutors said. Armed with store security images, the cops noted that Jackson appeared to be the same person who didn’t wear a mask at the Ulta store and then returned to steal fragrances.

Jackson is charged with felony theft and a driving offense. His public defender said he has one child and is a high school senior.

Judge Susana Ortiz set bail at $5,000 and ordered him to go onto electronic monitoring if he could post a 10% deposit. She also told him not to set foot in any Ulta store locations stores.

Earlier in Ortiz’s bond court session on Monday, prosecutors charged 26-year-old Jazmine Nooner with participating in a shoplifting raid on Ulta’s Greektown location, 16 South Halsted, on Saturday.

Prosecutor said she and at least one accomplice loaded $4,655 worth of fragrances into shopping bags and walked out. Cops allegedly found her sitting in a car with the Ulta merchandise on Sunday. She reportedly identified herself in still images and video from the store.

Nooner has a 9-year-old ulta store locations and recently began working at McDonald’s, according to her public defender.

$20k gone in 40 seconds: Photos released of suspects in Lehigh Valley beauty store heist

Pennsylvania State Police have released photos of the five suspects they say cleared a Lehigh Valley beauty store of $20,000 in items in about 40 seconds.

The theft Monday night was at Ulta Beauty in the Hamilton Crossings shopping center in Lower Macungie Township.

The group, who were wearing face coverings, filled bags they brought with them, fled the store and got away in a dark-colored sedan last seen heading toward Hamilton Boulevard, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Anyone with information on the identities of the people involved or with information about the thefts should call Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville Criminal Investigation Unit at 610-395-1438 and reference incident number PA21-1595996.

Ulta Beauty, Inc., formerly known as Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance Inc. and before 2000 as Ulta3, is an American chain of beauty stores headquartered in Bolingbrook, Illinois.[3] Ulta Beauty carries cosmetics, fragrances, nail products, bath and body products, beauty tools and haircare products. Each store also has a beauty salon.

History[edit]

Ulta was founded by Richard E. George, the former President of Osco Drug, Inc., and Terry Hanson. George left ulta store locations at Osco in 1989 in order to develop a business plan for a retailer that would offer beauty products at different price levels.[4] Other Osco executives joined George and Hanson in the business, and raised $11.5 million in venture capital. The company, initially called Ulta3, was launched in 1990 with five stores in Chicago suburbs. The name was changed from Ulta3 to Ulta at the end of 1999.[4][5]

George left Ulta3 in 1995, and Hanson became the company's Chief Executive Officer.[5] In December 1999, Lyn Kirby became the President and Chief Executive Officer and Charles "Rick" Weber became Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. The two ran the business together until Weber left in September 2006.[citation needed] On October 25, 2007, the company became publicly traded on the NASDAQ.[6]

In 2008, the company opened a second distribution center in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2010 Carl "Chuck" Rubin was appointed as Chief Operating Officer, President, and as a member of the Board of Directors.[7]

On June 24, 2013, it was announced that Mary Dillon would be appointed as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors, effective July 1, 2013.[8] Dillon was previously the chief of U.S. Cellular and a senior executive at Outer banks new homes for sale and PepsiCo.[9]

In 2010, the company had about 10,000 employees, increasing to about 44,000 in 2020. As of 2021, Ulta employs approximately 37,000 people.[2]

Operations[edit]

As of 2019, Ulta had stores in 48 states.[1] A majority of Ulta Beauty stores are located in the East Coast region and in California.[10]

In August 2021, the retail chain Target started selling Ulta's products.[11]

Ulta Beauty offers both high-end and drugstore cosmetics, skincare, and fragrances, in addition to its own brands of beauty products and fragrances. They sell brands such as MAC Cosmetics.[12]Kylie Cosmetics,[13] and ColourPop cosmetics.[14] Connected to each store is a hair and beauty salon which offers services including haircuts and coloring, skin and facial treatments, manicures, eyebrow treatments, and makeup applications.[citation needed]

Ulta Beauty sales were $713.8 million for the first quarter ending in May 2014.[15] At the end of the second quarter ending in August 2014, Ulta Beauty reported that total sales change mobile no in icici bank by 22.2 percent and comparable store sales increased 9.6 percent.[16] As of February 2, 2019, net sales for Ulta Beauty have increased 9.7% to $2,124.7 million.[citation needed]

Beauty business reports another record-breaking quarter for fiscal 2021

The US’ largest beauty retailer Ulta Beauty has reported another record-breaking quarter.

For the third quarter of fiscal 2021, ended 30 October, net sales increased almost 30% to US$2bn, compared with $1.6bn in Ulta store locations of fiscal 2020.

Gross profit spiked from $545m in 2020 to $789m this year, while a lack of impairment costs compared with the $23.6m the business had to fork out during 2020 has significantly improved Ulta’s balance books.

Net sales for the first nine months of 2021 increased just shy of 50% to $5.9bn, compared with $4bn during the same period in last year.

This, the group said, was primarily due to the ulta store locations situation regarding Covid-19.

The easing of restrictions helped consumer confidence grow, meaning more shoppers were back in-tore to pick up their beauty items.

Meanwhile, pre-opening expenses decreased to $1.8m compared with $4.2m in the third quarter of 2020.

“The Ulta Beauty team delivered outstanding results ulta store locations this quarter,” said Dave Kimbell, Chief Executive of Ulta, who took over from the company’s long-serving leader Mary Dillon in June.

The Big Risk Ulta Beauty Sees for Late 2021

Ulta Beauty's ( ULTA -1.61% ) operations are looking prettier with each passing quarter. The retailer of spa and beauty products recently announced the second straight upgrade to its 2021 outlook, following surprisingly strong sales growth.

But it isn't just the booming makeup industry that has Ulta targeting record earnings this year. As CEO Dave Kimbell and his team said in a recent conference call with Wall Street analysts, the chain is seeing a big lift from other trends that might support fundamentally higher profitability from here on out. Yet new risks are also cropping up, including a major challenge around inventory availability heading into the holidays.

Let's take a closer look at at these risks and opportunities ahead for the company:

Setting the stage

There's no question that Ulta is enjoying the best selling environment it has seen in years. The makeup industry came roaring back last quarter, and those improvements only accelerated through late July. "The beauty category is recovering faster than we expected," Kimbell said. "As consumer confidence, optimism, and comfort to shop in physical stores continues to increase, we are seeing more of our members return to stores."

Customer traffic is still below 2019 levels, but Ulta Beauty more than offset that headwind by securing much higher average spending per visit. It also has a booming digital selling channel. Overall, sales for the quarter ended June 30 totaled $2 billion compared to $1.2 billion last year and $1.7 billion in 2019.

A different market

There were significant demand shifts within that broader growth picture. Makeup sales are up only slightly when compared to 2019 while niches like fragrance, bath, hair care, and skin care have all surged higher.

Ulta succeeded in that volatile environment by keeping a lean inventory and quickly shifting its merchandising strategy at times. Management credits its omnichannel selling platform for keeping customers engaged, but also says the in-store experience is a key competitive advantage.

"Discovery and trial are critical parts of the beauty experience," Kimbell said, "and we offer a variety of physical and digital ways to discover new products, new trends, and new applications."

The biggest risk is empty shelves

As Ulta management sees it, the first half of 2021, along with the first few weeks of the third quarter, imply a strong finish to the year. The company now expects to achieve a 13% operating profit margin, aided by higher sales, reduced promotions, and a shift toward more premium products.

Ironically, besides COVID-19 outbreaks, the biggest risk that management sees in the short term is the challenge of securing enough inventory to handle demand over the next six months. Shipping delays are common today and could become worse with rising virus cases.

But Ulta believes it is taking the right steps to keep inventory flowing, even if it means holding too much at stores over the next quarter or so. "Our teams are working diligently to mitigate risk, and where appropriate, we are proactively working with our brand partners to prioritize receipts to ensure we have adequate inventory for the holiday season," CFO Scott Settersten said.

That strategy means investors will see elevated inventory levels in the third quarter that should come right back down in the following quarter if the industry continues growing as it has so far in 2021.
