Wild Horse Corolla North Carolina Outer Banks

No question about it, one of the most popular attractions on the Outer Banks are the wild horses of Corolla, North Carolina. Descendants of the original colonial Spanish Mustangs, something about these wild animals running free on the northern OBX beaches has had us all captivated for decades.

If you’ve never seen these majestic beauties, then you’re missing out!

Sure, you may have climbed to the top ofCape Hatteras Lighthouseor tried your hand at riding waves during a surfing lesson. You may have even spent an afternoon learning about the two brothers from Dayton, OH who came to the Outer Banks at the turn of the last century and changed the world forever with their flying machine.

You may have done all of these amazing OBX activities, but have you ever watched a Corolla wild horse jog along the beach? It’s something you have to witness at least once!

If you’d like to see the Corolla wild horses, you have two options:

  1. You can book a wild horse tour with a company like Corolla Outback Adventures
  2. Or you can embark on your own, self-guided journey on the 4×4 beaches of Carova on a quest to find the wild horses!

With either method, seeing the horses isn’t a guarantee, but it’s highly likely that you will spot at least one. The bright side is that even if you don’t see a wild horse, you’ll still be able to enjoy Corolla’s incredible natural beauty and diverse wildlife during your adventure!

Free Self-Guided Corolla Wild Horse Tour

Let’s start out by mentioning that you will, in fact, need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. And before you ask, NO, do not attempt to drive your car, minivan, or any other vehicle that doesn’t specifically have an option for a four-wheel-drive on the beach.

Numerous times each year, someone takes a photo of a vacationer who attempted to drive on the soft packed sand in Corolla or Hatteras Island in a minivan and ended up getting stuck…Don’t be that guy or girl!

Okay, so drive your four-wheel-drive vehicle to Corolla and keep heading north on NC 12 (past Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Whalehead) until you come to a point where there is no more paved road. Then, let some air out of your tires to help with traction, and head out onto the beach and continue heading north.

Some say that you’ll need to drive at least six miles before you’ll see the horses – others have spotted them within a few hundred feet from where the paved road ends. Keep heading north until you’ve seen enough horses or until there is no more beach to drive on!

Here is an image from Google Maps… You’ll see that right here the paved road ends and if you want to continue north, you have to drive on the beach.

In addition to the 4×4 area, the Corolla wild horses are regularly spotted in the backyards of homes that are located in subdivisions before the spot where the road ends as well.

Instead of driving aimlessly through the many cul-de-sacs of Corolla in search of the horses, drive on the beach instead or reserve a Corolla wild horse tour with a reputable local company (see below).

Guided Corolla Wild Horse Tours

Ponying up the money for a guided Corolla wild horse tour may be the best option for those that are either unfamiliar with the area, not comfortable driving on the beach (or don’t own a four-wheel-drive vehicle) or would like a hassle-free option that requires you to only show up and enjoy the ride.

There are many different companies that offer guided Corolla wild horse tours, all of which you’re sure to have a memorable experience with.

For the most part, when you book a guided Corolla wild horse, expect that you’ll be riding in an open-air, safari-style vehicle that has seating for about 14 patrons. The guides are usually very entertaining and will ensure that you have the best possible chance of seeing a wild horse.

Unlike Outer Banks dolphin tours with a company like Kitty Hawk Kites, there is no 99% guarantee that you’ll spot one of these wild Spanish Mustangs. (However, there is a really good chance!)

Corolla wild horse tours cost about $50 for adults and $25 for children. Many companies offer discounts if you are willing to go on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Most companies that offer this service do not do so year-round, in fact, many will close up shop for the season sometime in early to mid-October and then reopen in the spring, sometime around May.

Please keep in mind!(This is important!)

Feeding or coming within 50 feet of a Corolla wild horse is 100% illegal and dangerous for both you and the horse.

The Currituck County Police Department will not hesitate to issue you a ticket if you break this law! There are numerous photos of people petting one of the horses that pop up on Facebook and Instagram each summer… Don’t do it!

Oh, and don’t forget to bring a camera! Pictures of the Corolla wild horses look great in family vacation photo albums! (They also look great on your personal Facebook page wall of course.)

This video from Wild Horse Adventure Tours will give you an idea of what to expect during a guided wild horse tour.

Best of luck on your adventure!

The Ultimate 7 Day Outer Banks Itinerary

Explore the stunning OBX shoreline with this 1 week Outer Banks itinerary

The Outer Banks are a series of barrier islands in North Carolina that have recently risen to stardom thanks to the Netflix original series, Outer Banks. Despite what you might have heard, the Outer Banks is more than just a mysterious compass, teenage angst, and John B.

The islands are a natural wonderland that truly embodies the saying, "There's something for everyone." They're 200 miles long and are rarely more than a mile wide. Although usually low lying, some naturally formed sand dunes in the Outer Banks rise to more than 100 feet.

Full of natural beauty and wild adventures, these islands are a family-friendly and budget-friendly destination. There are also several exciting and interesting towns on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to explore.

If you are looking to make the most of a week-long trip to the Outer Banks, this 1 week in Outer Banks itinerary will help you experience the best of what they have to offer!

1 Week Outer Banks Itinerary

Using the map of North Carolina, you can explore all the days and stops.

Currituck & Corolla

Currituck Lighthouse in North Carolina

Your perfect 7-day Outer Banks itinerary starts in the northernmost part of the islands. This is the best way to see all of the Outer Banks without having to backtrack.

The northern parts of the Outer Banks are a bit wilder than the other parts of the islands. This makes the area ideal for nature lovers.

There are several ways to get to the Outer Banks, with most either driving or flying in. Airports close to the Outer Banks include both international and regional ones.

See Wild Horses at the Beach

You've probably heard about the wild Spanish mustangs that roam free in the Outer Banks. To see these beauties, you will need to head to the northernmost beaches in Currituck and Corolla.

During the Colonial era, explorers from Spain brought the mustangs with them to explore the area. Now, seeing the descendants of the horses in the wild is a must-see while in the Outer Banks.

You don't need to book a tour to see them for yourself. Typically, people drive on the beaches to get to the horses. For this, a 4-wheel drive will be necessary.

If you don't have a 4-wheel drive and don't want to rent one, you can walk. You will probably have to walk about two miles to reach the horses, but the reward is worth the effort! Before leaving the area, take a swim, hunt for shark's teeth, or go shelling at Corolla Beach.

Historic Corolla Park

Currituck Beach Lighthouse & Historic Corolla Park

End your first day by walking the 220 steps to the top of Currituck Beach Lighthouse for perfect views of the historic Whalehead Club and Currituck Sound. In the late 1800s, the lighthouse's beacon began lighting the way for ships along the North Carolina coast.

The area off of the Outer Banks coast is called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the number of boats that capsized in the area. A large number of the lost and sunken ships reported in 1872 led to the Currituck Lighthouse being built three years later.

Before leaving, take the short walk across the road to Historic Corolla Park. The park offers a view of the sound, crabbing, fishing, and a gorgeous wooden footbridge.

If you have a kayak or canoe, there is an area where you can launch it from in the park. For photographers or those looking for the perfect Instagram shot, there are a lot of pretty photo opportunities along the water and wooden boardwalks in front of the Whalehead Club.

Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, & Nags Head

Day two of your Outer Banks itinerary includes learning about the area's history, getting adventurous on the sand dunes, relaxing on a beach, and more while you make your way down the Outer Banks.

Kitty Hawk

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

On your second day in the Outer Banks, head south to Kitty Hawk. You can learn more about the Wright brothers and the way they shaped aviation as we know it today at the Monument to a Century of Flight.

Next, head to Sandy Run Park. It's one of my favorite places in Kitty Hawk because it has wooden boardwalks reaching out over the marshes, and you can always catch sight of turtles, fish, ducks, and other wildlife. This park is popular among locals more than tourists, making it an excellent option for getting away from the crowds.

Before heading south, stop by the Avalon Pier for a relaxing break. Grab a snack and enjoy it on the pier while you watch the surfers and kayakers in the ocean.

Kill Devil Hills

TripAdvisorGet directions

Next, it's time to head south to Kill Devil Hills. Yes, this town has a rather strange name that comes from a type of bird that used to inhabit the area. The Killdeer gave the place the nickname of Killdeer Hills, which became Kill Devil Hills over time.

Kill Devil Hills is famous for being the birthplace of flight, which leads us to the Wright Brothers National Monument. Diving into the area's history is a great way to truly experience and appreciate where you are. You can learn about the Wright brothers and their iconic first flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

Make sure you bring your walking shoes and plenty of water if you visit in the summer months. If you're traveling with kids, this is an excellent stop in the Outer Banks. Children 15 and younger get in for free!

Before you leave town, head to Ocean Bay Blvd for a swim or a walk on the beach. After all, the Outer Banks is famous for its beaches.

Ahead of going to a beach, though, make sure you check the wind speeds. The islands can occasionally be too windy to enjoy the beaches. A quick google search can tell you what the conditions will be like on the beach in Kill Devil Hills.

Nags Head beach and Pier

Nags Head

TripAdvisorGet directions

End your second day with adventure in Nags Head! Nags Head is home to Jockey's Ridge State Park. If you were to ask me what's the #1 thing to see in the Outer Banks, Jockey's Ridge would be neck and neck with seeing the wild horses. Its beauty is unreal!

The state park has the tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast and the perfect conditions for kite flying and hang gliding. You can take your own hang gliding lesson in the park.

If hang gliding isn't your thing, head to the First Flight Adventure Park. They have different aerial obstacle courses for varying levels of difficulty. They each have their own zip line, too!

The best way to end a day in Nags Head is by watching the sunset at Jennette's Pier. It's the oldest fishing pier in the Outer Banks, and without a doubt, the most beautiful.

Roanoke Island

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, NC

This little barrier island is famous for its "lost colony" of settlers. It is one of the most entertaining and interesting islands in the Outer Banks, and you could easily spend a whole weekend exploring Roanoke Island.

Only 12 miles long and 3 miles wide on average, Roanoke was the first-attempted English settlement in North America. It's also the birthplace of Virginia Dare, the first child born of English parents in the New World.

Day 3 of your Outer Banks trip itinerary will be full of history and interesting educational sites. Make sure to bring your walking shoes, and if you're visiting in the summer, lots of water!

Fort Raleigh Historic Site in the Outer Banks, NC

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the location of the Roanoke colony of 1587. The settlement was promoted and financed by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Unfortunately, sometime between 1587 and 1590, supply ships failed to arrive at the colony. When the colony was next visited, the settlement had been abandoned, and no survivors were ever found.

The fate of the "lost colony" has never been solved. This history and the mystery of this settlement draws hundreds of thousands of people to this historic site each year.

While you're here, you can see the "earthwork" that has been left behind. It is archaeological proof that metallurgical activity took place while people lived in Roanoke Colony. You can also walk the 1.25 mile Freedom Trail that leads you to the Croatan Sound.

Before you leave, make sure to stop at the Waterside Theatre. The Roanoke Island Historical Association puts on a drama at the Waterside Theatre about the Lost Colony. The show is a great way to educate yourself about the colony while also supporting the artists in Roanoke.

The Island Farm is a 19th-century farm that has been turned into a living museum. They have employees in period attire explaining what life was like on the farm when it was first established.

You can feed the animals and try products that were made on the farm. You can also learn how corn husk dolls were made, how to spin wool, and the process of turning corn into mill. Island Farm is an excellent stop for family and budget travelers.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse

TripAdvisorGet directions

Not your typical lighthouse, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse that you can reach by walking out on a wooden boardwalk over the Bay.

Under the lighthouse is a little museum that you can explore for free. The best part about this lighthouse is its location. There are restaurants, shopping opportunities, and sweet shops, all within walking distance of the lighthouse.

Walk around and see what shops interest you. I recommend stopping by The Laughing Lollipop. They have typical yummy treats, but also some interesting and strange flavored candies as well.

Stop for dinner at one of the restaurants in the area that can be reached on foot. The Lost Colony Brewery and Cafe is one of the best breweries in the Outer Banks, a crowd favorite and has a great outdoor seating area.

Bodie Island & Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Day 4 is all about relaxation and enjoying nature. You'll spend time relaxing on the beach, driving on thin strips of the barrier island, and exploring the Outer Banks' marshlands.

Spend your morning walking along Coquina Beach. It's a white sand beach that is expansive, so you shouldn't have any issues finding personal space.

If you're lucky, you may even see deer walking around in the dune grass on the beach. If you're traveling with young kids, keep in mind that the Outer Banks' beaches can get windy and have strong surf.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

The Bodie Island Lighthouse has had a turbulent history. Initially built in 1847, the Bodie Lighthouse sadly had to be abandoned due to a failing foundation. It was built up again in 1859 with better construction. The lighthouse once again was destroyed in 1861 by Confederate troops to keep it out of Union hands.

Today, the lighthouse wears the classic black and white stripes that we have grown to expect of a lighthouse. You can climb the 214 steps leading up ten stories to the top of the lighthouse to view Pamlico Sound, marshlands, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Watch out for rattlesnakes around the lighthouse. They are native to the area and like to hang out underneath the wooden boardwalks. If you were to see a rattlesnake, simply let it be. If you leave them alone and give them space, they will move on. Just stay on the boardwalk, and you'll be just fine.

There are no buildings along the stretch of road through the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Driving through the refuge is a beautiful experience. It's a thin strip of island with a small area of sand dunes and grass on either side of the road before turning into the sound and ocean.

There are many places to pull off in the refuge and park your vehicle. You can park along the road to find a perfect beach that fits your needs.

If you visit in the spring, you'll be able to see colorful wildflowers growing along the sand dunes. If you visit in the summer or a month before or after the summer months, you will need to make sure to bring bug spray.

After lunch, head south to the Salvo Day Use Area in Salvo. The day-use area is a beach that has plenty of room for sunbathing and swimming. There's a lot of driftwood on the beach, which makes a beautiful backdrop for pictures.

There are also bathrooms, picnic tables, and a fascinating historic cemetery on part of the beach. Salvo isn't as popular as Mexico or Brazil for kite surfing, but still, thousands come to Salvo to kite surf each year. Bring your own equipment and join in, or simply lay on the beach and watch the others.

It's one of the unique things to do in the Outer Banks and makes for a fun and different Instagram photo-op.

Ocracoke Island

When you think of the best beaches in the United States, you probably think of Hawaii or Florida. One of the top-rated beaches in the country, however, is located right on little Ocracoke Island.

So on Day 7, you'll start your morning with a ferry ride to the Island, climb a lighthouse, see wild ponies, and visit the #2 beach in America.

You could easily spend a whole weekend exploring Ocracoke Island as it has one of the most interesting histories of any place I've been.

You will learn many fascinating North Carolina facts and fun Outer Banks facts while you're here because the locals are very friendly and love to share information.

For example, did you know that the famous pirate, Blackbeard, used to hang out around Ocracoke Island a lot? He actually died at the hands of the Spanish off the Island's coast.

The lighthouse was actually only used for less than twenty years. Over time, the channel that the lighthouse was providing light for had migrated, making it obsolete.

There are only three parking spots at the lighthouse, but don't worry! People don't stay at the lighthouse for a long time. Just do a quick lap around the block if you need to wait for a spot to open up.

Beauties On The Beach

It had been a few weeks since Motor Man and I had been to Carova to see  the wild horses, so a few days ago, we took a ride.

As it happened, we picked the perfect day to go.  We had gorgeous blue skies and warm temperatures. AND the horses were out enjoying the beach. We saw at least 58, perhaps more.  That was at least half of the herd.

I call this one: “two blondes on the beach”.

It seems humans aren’t the only ones who like soaking up the sun.

A better view:

his is one of my favorite shots of the day:

I had read on the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Facebook page that there have been five foals born so far this season. So I was hoping to catch a glimpse of at least one baby.

This is Benjamin (born April 11)  enjoying a stroll along the ocean with his parents. Just look at Mom’s windblown mane.

My maternal grandfather’s middle name was Benjamin, and everyone called him “Ben”, so I was especially pleased to see this little guy.

Grow strong and run free, Benjamin!

Why This New Yorker’s Second Trip to OBX Was Even Better Than the First

Nearly all my adult life, I’ve heard wonderful things about the Outer Banks. Its beaches, its lighthouses, its outdoor activities all have been described in gushing detail by friends, family, and acquaintances. I finally made the trip down south from my upstate New York home a few years ago, and appreciated everything that I’d heard before. But my second trip down there, in August 2021, made me truly fall in love.

First, it’s an easy flight to Norfolk, Virginia, then a picturesque two-hour drive from there into the heart of OBX. Make sure to stop at Trio Restaurant & Market to stock up on provisions for your stay – and enjoy a nice lunch paired with a glass of wine. If you get lucky like I did on my first visit, you’ll be helped by a friendly staff member who hails from up North (Sharon was a trove of helpful hints, including the correct pronunciation of Corolla and Bodie Island!).

wine trio drink

This year, I knew to look for the Wild Pony White by Sanctuary Vineyards, a Chardonnay-centric wine that not only tastes delicious but also benefits the Corolla Wild Horse Fund (thanks, Sharon, for recommending it the last time!). Wild Pony is also sold at the four Cotton Gin bottle shops throughout OBX as well as at the Sanctuary Vineyard itself: Well worth the half-hour hop inland, or as a side trip on your way down to the OBX, the winery is a welcome place to relax with a sip or two.

The house where I stayed in 2019 was beachfront, which was heavenly for this New Yorker: it’s next to impossible to afford a safe, quiet, and comfortable beachfront stay at the places close to home (think Jersey Shore or Long Island), but it’s possible down here to do just that. For this visit, however, we chose a newly built house that was literally just a three-block walk to the public beach access. Thanks to my previous visit, we knew to book our place through Kees Outer Banks Vacation Rentals. The property management group made sure we had the door access code before check-in, and we knew that hand soap, shampoo, and shower gel were complimentary, along with starter packs of necessities like coffee, paper goods, and dish soap. The kitchen had plenty of dishes and cookware, and we gladly used them throughout our stay.

Activities galore

The gorgeous and uncrowded beaches are a welcome respite from what this New Yorker is used to. No beach-access fees meant we could come and go as we pleased without worrying about losing a badge or needing to stash a wallet.

We had to cross South Virginia Dare Trail to reach the beach access from our house, but it was easy. Indeed, nearly every driver stopped at the crosswalk and allowed us to pass with a friendly wave (don’t try that in Manhattan!). In addition to getting our daily steps with this gentle stroll, we stumbled upon a little free library along the route  – a heartfelt bonus for this avid reader. I think I borrowed and returned three books during our stay, and left behind one that I’d brought from home.

Free little library books

We had an entire week to indulge in everything that OBX had to offer. Our first activity was flying kites at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Our son bought a spectacular kite at Kitty Hawk Kites, and we walked across the street to the park. Thanks to my previous visit I knew we could just ditch our shoes at the entrance and sink our toes in the sand, knowing our shoes would still be there on our way back. Hint: Visit Jockey’s Ridge at sunset, and don’t forget a camera. Your high-flying kite, backlit by the setting sun, makes a striking photo as well as a great memory.

jockeys ridge kite flying

Speaking of Kitty Hawk, we all loved the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Try to visit early in the day to avoid crowds, and wear comfortable walking shoes; you’ll want to experience every inch of this space, from the museum to the towering memorial to the spot where Wilbur and Orville’s creation first flew.

Comforts of home

Although OBX is definitely a vacation destination, we never once felt like we were in a tourist trap (some of the beaches up north aren’t so lucky). Anything we needed, from a convenient grocery store to a drugstore to a bank, was just a short drive away. We also were pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone was; we felt like regulars, not outsiders.

Living in the Hudson Valley, we’re used to fresh produce at farmer’s markets in the summer. Lo and behold, on our visit to Duck (get the donuts, by the way), we were able to pick up corn, tomatoes, and other bounty at the Tomato Shack produce stand.

Lighthouses and horses

We live in the woods up here in New York, so there’s zero chance to indulge my love of lighthouses. But down on the OBX, we had five opportunities to visit one. Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of my favorites, for its rustic setting and long boardwalk to stretch our legs, as well as hourly ranger talks informing us of the lighthouse’s history. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, of course, is a must-visit, as is Ocracoke Light – both at the southern point of OBX.

If you live in the Hudson Valley, like we do, you’re used to lighthouses that are incorporated right into the keepers’ houses. You’ll find something similar at the Roanoke Marshes Light.

cape hatteras lighthouse

On our way north to visit the wild horses (yet another sight we’d never see near our home!), we stumbled upon the Currituck Beach Light, remarkable for its red-brick construction.

Speaking of those horses, I absolutely urge you to book a wild horse tour. Not only will you see these majestic beauties just strolling around, living their best life, you’ll enjoy the rush of bouncing along the shoreline in a tour trailer – and, if you’re lucky like we were, you’ll learn about sea turtles, a WWII lookout on the beach, and other cool tidbits from a seasoned beach dude who’s your tour guide.

Planning a third visit….and a fourth

There’s so much we explored on OBX that won’t even fit into this story. We kayaked on a marsh, shopped at the beautiful stores in Manteo, marveled at the history of Fort Raleigh, ate a delicious lunch at the Caffey’s Inlet Life Saving Station at the Sanderling Resort…and still had time to simply kick back on the beach and swim past the breakers.

One thing’s for sure. We’ll definitely be back.

Some people may assume that if you’ve seen one horse, you’ve seen them all. That’s not entirely true as the Spanish Mustangs that roam the shores near Corolla are unique animals. Feral horses aren’t too common in the United States, so these animals live a different life on the Outer Banks. Local guides know exactly where to go for the best sightings, and they often share tidbits of information about the wild horses. Plus, the serene coastline offers a pleasant scenic experience.

Corolla Wild Horse Fund

Amid the variety of wild horse tours, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund is one of the best. Modern-day Gray’s is still family owned and operated by their children Ronnie and Julie Gray, who carry on a legacy of superior customer service and traditional values. Ronnie’s wife Susan is also an important part of the business. “It really was always a family operating as a business rather than a business being run by a family,” explains Ronnie Gray. “When our visitors come in, they are greeted by a warm hello and a ‘Welcome to Gray’s.’ We try to welcome them as if they’re entering our own home”
