Beechcraft Model 18

Twin-engine, low-wing, tailwheel light aircraft produced 1937–1970

The Beechcraft Model 18 (or "Twin Beech", as it is also known) is a 6- to 11-seat,[1] twin-engined, low-wing, tailwheellight aircraft manufactured by the Beech Aircraft Corporation of Wichita, Kansas. Continuously produced from 1937 to November 1969 (over 32 years, a world record at the time), over 9,000 were built, making it one of the world's most widely used light aircraft. Sold worldwide as a civilian executive, utility, cargo aircraft, and passenger airliner on tailwheels, nosewheels, skis, or floats, it was also used as a military aircraft.[2][3][4]

During and after World War II, over 4,500 Beech 18s were used in military service—as light transport, light bomber (for China), aircrew trainer (for bombing, navigation, and gunnery), photo-reconnaissance, and "mother ship" for target drones—including United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) C-45 Expeditor, AT-7 Navigator, and AT-11 Kansan; and United States Navy (USN) UC-45J Navigator,SNB-1 Kansan, and others. In World War II, over 90% of USAAF bombardiers and navigators trained in these aircraft.[2][3][5]

In the early postwar era, the Beech 18 was the pre-eminent "business aircraft" and "feeder airliner". Besides carrying passengers, its civilian uses have included aerial spraying, sterile insect release, fish stocking, dry-icecloud seeding, aerial firefighting, air-mail delivery, ambulance service, numerous movie productions, skydiving, freight, weapon- and drug-smuggling, engine testbed, skywriting, banner towing, and stunt aircraft. Many are now privately owned, around the world, with 240 in the U.S. still on the FAA Aircraft Registry in August 2017.[2][4][6][7]

By the late 1930s, Beechcraft management speculated that a demand would exist for a new design dubbed the Model 18, which would have a military application, and increased the main production facilities. The design was mainly conventional for the time, including twin radial engines, all-metal semimonocoque construction with fabric-covered control surfaces, and tailwheel undercarriage. Less conventional was the twin-tailfin configuration. The Model 18 can be mistaken for the larger Lockheed Electra series of airliners, which closely resemble it. Early production aircraft were powered either by two 330-hp (250-kW) Jacobs L-6s or 350-hp (260-kW) Wright R-760Es. The 450-hp (336-kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 became the definitive engine from the prewar C18S onwards. The Beech 18 prototype first flew on January 15, 1937.

The aircraft has used a variety of engines and has had a number of airframe modifications to increase gross weight and speed. At least one aircraft was modified to a 600-hp (447-kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1340 powerplant configuration. With the added weight of about 200 lb (91 kg) per engine, the concept of a Model 18 fitted with R-1340 engines was deemed unsatisfactory due to the weakest structural area of the aircraft being the engine mounts. Nearly every airframe component has been modified.

In 1955, deliveries of the Model E18S commenced; the E18S featured a fuselage that was extended 6 in (150 mm) higher for more headroom in the passenger cabin. All later Beech 18s (sometimes called Super 18s) featured this taller fuselage, and some earlier models (including one AT-11) have been modified to this larger fuselage. Unusually, the undercarriage was developed for earlier-model aircraft under an STC by Volpar, and installed in H18s at the factory during manufacture. A total of 109 H18s was built with tricycle undercarriage, and another 240 earlier-model aircraft were modified with this.[8][9]

Construction of the Beechcraft Model 18 ended in 1970 with a final Model H18 going to Japan Airlines.[citation needed] Through the years, 32 variations of the basic design had flown, over 200 improvement modification kits were developed, and almost 8,000 aircraft were built. In one case, the aircraft was modified to a triple tail, trigear, humpbacked configuration and appeared similar to a miniature Lockheed Constellation. Another distinctive conversion was carried out by Pacific Airmotive as the PacAero Tradewind. This featured a lengthened nose to accommodate the tricycle nosewheel, and the Model 18's twin tailfins were replaced by a single fin.[10]

Operational history[edit]

Production got an early boost when Nationalist China paid the company US$750,000 for six M18R light bombers,[11] but by the time of the U.S. entry into World War II, only 39 Model 18s had been sold, of which 29 were for civilian customers.[8][12] Work began in earnest on a variant specifically for training military pilots, bombardiers, and navigators. The effort resulted in the Army AT-7 and Navy SNB. Further development led to the AT-11 and SNB-2 navigation trainers and the C-45 military transport. The United States Air Force (USAF) Strategic Air Command had Model 18 variants (AT-11 Kansans, C-45 One main financial puyallup, F-2 Expeditors (the "F" standing for "Fotorecon", short for "photographic reconnaissance"), and UC-45 Expeditors) from 1946 until 1951. From 1951 to 1955, the USAF had many of its aircraft remanufactured with new fuselages, wing center sections, and undercarriages to take advantage of the improvements to the civil models since the end of World War II. Eventually, 900 aircraft were remanufactured to be similar to the then-current Model D18S and given new designations, constructor's numbers, and Cox login pay bill Force serial numbers.[13] The USN had many of its surviving aircraft remanufactured, as well, these being redesignated as SNB-5s and SNB-5Ps.[citation needed] The C-45 flew in USAF service until 1963, the USN retired its last SNB in 1972, while the U.S. Army flew its C-45s until 1976. In later years, the military called these aircraft "bug smashers" in reference to their extensive use supplying mandatory flight hours for desk-bound aviators in the Pentagon.[14]

Beech 18s were used extensively by Air America during the Vietnam War; initially more-or-less standard ex-military C-45 examples were used, but then the airline had 12 aircraft modified by Conrad Conversions in 1963 and 1964 to increase performance and load-carrying capacity. The modified aircraft were known as Conrad Ten-Twos, as the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) was increased to 10,200 lb (4,600 kg).[15][16] The increase was achieved by several airframe modifications, including increased horizontal stabilizer angle-of-incidence, redesigned undercarriage doors, and aerodynamically improved wingtips. Air America then had Volpar convert 14 aircraft to turboprop power, fitted with Garrett AiResearch TPE-331 engines; modified aircraft were called Volpar Turbo Beeches, and also had a further increase in MTOW to 10,286 lb (4,666 kg).[15]

Spar problems[edit]

The wing spar of the Model 18 was fabricated by welding an assembly of tubular steel. The configuration of the tubes in combination with drilled holes from aftermarket STC modifications on some of these aircraft have allowed the spar to become susceptible to corrosion and cracking while in service.[17] This prompted the FAA to issue an Airworthiness Directive in 1975, mandating the fitting of a spar strap to some Model 18s. This led, in turn, to the retirement of a large number of STC-modified Model 18s when owners determined the aircraft were worth less than the cost of the modifications. The corrosion on unmodified spars was not a problem; it occurred due to the additional exposed surface area created through the STC hole-drilling process. Further requirements have been mandated by the FAA and other national airworthiness authorities, including regular removal of the spar strap to allow the strap to be checked for cracks and corrosion and the spar to be X-rayed. In Australia, the airworthiness authority has placed a life limit on the airframe, beyond which aircraft are not allowed to fly.[18][19][20]

The burnt remains of trucks now litter the roads of KwaZulu-Natal. As with other “xenophobic violence”, looking past the targets reveals something far more fundamental – and disturbing – about South African society. 

This is not simply random or embittered violence at the hands of those denied the benefits of personal progress by the state or through capitalism. These attacks are a political project that uses resentment and bitterness to further personal and communal political agendas while creating new centres of power.

A form of often violent politics is emerging, in and outside of the ruling party and the state. It operates outside of the law and seeks to broker access to opportunities of various kinds – from jobs to land, tenders and state development – to build forms of authority outside of the laws that regulate the state and the market. In some instances, elected leaders and government officials are directly complicit in these increasingly militant attacks and the political project that drives them.

First, the facts. 

Since March 2018, at least 213 people have been killed, 1 400 trucks torched and R1.2 billion worth of goods lost, largely along the route between the port in Durban and Gauteng. Capital one auto loan customer care instigators say the trucking industry must stop hiring “foreign nationals” and are demanding that the authorities do something to ensure that “the right people” are employed. 

The All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF), an organisation that represents truck drivers in South Africa, has warned that its “war” will continue “until all foreigners are gone”. 

Members are planning a national shutdown on 18 July, which they are calling “Trucking Black Day”. With four out of five goods in Gauteng shipped along the route from Durban – which is also a supply line to Zimbabwe, Malawi and elsewhere – such actions threaten national and regional economies. 

New targets

The ongoing violence suggests a shift in target. While the direct target of xenophobic violence has usually been san jose sharks playoffs migrants, or outsiders in general, the current violence targets migrants and South African drivers indiscriminately. The South Africans who have been attacked are from elsewhere in the country or have shown inadequate loyalty to those wielding petrol bombs.

Attacking drivers is a form of political strong-arming designed to close the industry to all that those pushing the aforementioned political project label as outsiders. It is an open war, not only on truck drivers but also owners and the trucking industry as a whole. It is a dangerous development that warrants concern.

This is not an isolated development. For years, metered taxi drivers have attacked Uber drivers – sometimes imposing exclusive claims on access to key nodes in the transport network – and in some instances with apparent impunity. And groups such as the Delangokubona Business Forum have been using armed intimidation to gain access to private construction budgets. 

These kinds of tactics are frequently mediated through claims about opportunities for “locals” that explicitly exclude migrants and people from different parts of South Africa. Now that the trucking industry is under attack, it does not seem unreasonable to wonder if similar threats will develop in other industries.

Feeble government efforts

Government efforts to counter assaults on those working in the trucking industry have been feeble. Some perpetrators have been arrested, but few have been prosecuted. Many of those arrested have been charged with a traffic offence and released on bail of R500.  

Officials have condemned the violence but seem unprepared to take effective action against perpetrators. Minister of Police Bheki Cele hascharacterised the attacks on trucks as economic sabotage. This is true, but labelling them as such denies the immense social and political consequences of these attacks. 

What is at stake extends well beyond debates relating to migration or protection for South Africa’s struggling workers in a time of mass structural unemployment and economic decline. It is disingenuous, and dangerous, to dismiss these as attacks on people who “shouldn’t be here anyway”. Making this about migration distracts us from what matters. 

South Africa’s unemployment rate is what is the capital of wyoming cheyenne over 27%. It is far higher in the places where violence typically occurs. But this violence is not about removing migrants, it is more generally about a dangerous politics of localism and entitlement, and rationing access to rights and opportunities: housing, healthcare, education, business opportunities, labour markets and the like. It is about the emergence of a politics of local strongmen in response to a general breakdown in trust in the rule of law.

Exclusion as ammunition

Government officials often act to placate such assertions and sentiments even while publicly condemning the violence they beget. Throughout the country, local political battles are being fought with exclusion as ammunition. 

This was a repeated feature of contestation during recent election campaigns. Tacitly or explicitly endorsing exclusion can win votes or popularity for officials and institutions whose legitimacy is under threat. Promising to exclude people from another country, another party, another township or another province can bolster political careers for those who have little else to offer. 

Whether driven from within or outside of the state, or an alliance of actors in and outside of the state, a politics of exclusion offers short-term political gains for a few while exacerbating the weakness of South Africa’s already fragile national economy. It reduces the prospects of constitutional protection and democratic forms of disputation for the many. Every victory creates further incentives for violent exclusion, a process that is seldom restricted to people who do not hold South African citizenship.

Whether in Gugulethu, Ermelo or Durban, local residents regularly exclude people deemed to be “outsiders” regardless of their citizenship. Whether it is jobs, houses, municipal services or living spaces, people are denied rights on the grounds of where they are from, even when that is elsewhere in South Africa. This fragments the economy and limits the benefits of trade and domestic mobility. It is also an expression of an ongoing attack on democratic values. 

Just as we debate the ethics of vigilante violence – of which these attacks on truck drivers are a particular offshoot – we must ask who we want rationing the rights to jobs, business and housing. Closing the borders to Zimbabwe and Mozambique may look to some like the country asserting its independence, but such reactionary moves will not sustain or promote South African jobs or business. 

For now, that is beside the point. The impulse to exclude threatens to draw boundaries and divides at every level across the country. South Africans rightfully worry about the lingering effects of racism and the economic marginalisation of previously oppressed groups. Yet in ensuring that everyone has equal access to the country’s scarce but adequate resources, whose interests are served by South Africans violently excluding each other?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our products (big blocks of wood), we are unable to absorb shipping costs for returned items. We would prefer not to have a restocking fee, but shipping just one-way is, on average, 20% of the cost of the board. 

To share in the cost of returns however, if you would like to exchange your purchase for store credit, we will NOT charge a restocking fee and only ask that you cover the return shipping.

 For damaged, defective or incorrect orders, please contact us within 3 days of receiving your merchandise. We may need to request pictures of damage for shipping claims. An RMA will be issued to you once you have contacted us. If we or the shipping carrier is at fault, we will replace or refund your order at our cost.

Sound transport infrastructure and public transport services are important prerequisites for an attractive living and business environment. This is why the public sector supports public transport and rail freight transport: the federal government, cantons and communes pay around half of these transport costs.

The federal government spends over CHF 5 billion annually on public transport and rail freight. The mandate of the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) is to steer the financing and to make it as efficient as possible. The FOT's area of competence includes the following items:

  • Expenditure on expansion projects and on operating and maintaining railway infrastructure is financed through the Rail Infrastructure Fund (around CHF 4.5 billion per year),
  • To ensure the basic provision of public transport services throughout Switzerland, the federal government and the cantons commission transport companies in the regional passenger transport system to provide the required train, bus and, in some cases, cable car or boat services (the federal government's share of the cost is around one billion francs per year),
  • The federal government also promotes rail freight transport, on the one hand with operating subsidies for combined transport through the Alps, and on the other hand by co-financing freight transport facilities such as terminals and sidings (a total of around CHF 100 to 200 million per year).
  • The federal government also makes contributions towards car transport by rail, primarily by providing regular investment credits. These subsides and contributions are largely financed by revenues from road transport.
  • In addition to national roads, the Federal Roads Office's National Highways and Urban Transport Fund (NAF) also co-finances the expansion of public transport in the programmes for urban areas. Funding is primarily aimed at bus and tram projects.

Regional passenger transport that does not serve to connect smaller communities (places with fewer than 100 inhabitants) and local transport (e.g. inner-city transport) can be financed by the cantons alone or together with the communes. The federal government does not participate in funding this. National passenger transport services, i.e. long-distance transport, is not funded by the federal government either. All long-distance transport must be run on a commercial basis.

Responsibilities for correct use of subsidies and oversight by the FOT

The transport companies are responsible for ensuring that subsidies are used properly and lawfully. They are supported in this by auditing companies:

  • Transport companies whose subsidies and loans for regional passenger transport and for operating and maintaining railway infrastructure exceed one million francs per year must undergo a special audit annually in accordance with the corresponding FOT guideline.
  • Transport companies that receive more than ten million francs per year in subsidies for regional passenger transport and infrastructure must have their annual accounts audited by an auditing company.
  • Transport companies should use a recognised accounting standard designated by the FOT.
  • Transport companies must submit a declaration to confirm that they comply with the principles of subsidy law.

The FOT oversees the sectors that are (co-)financed by the federal government. This ensures that the payment of subsidies is property controlled and their correct use is verified. In particular, the financial plans (bids) and the annual accounts of the transport companies are examined.

The burnt remains of trucks now litter the roads of KwaZulu-Natal. As with other “xenophobic violence”, looking past the targets reveals something far more fundamental – and disturbing – about South African society. 

This is not simply random or embittered violence at the hands of those denied the benefits of personal progress by the state or through capitalism. These attacks are a political project that uses resentment and bitterness to further personal and communal political agendas while creating new centres of power.

A form of often violent politics is emerging, in and outside of the ruling party and the state. It operates outside of the law and seeks to broker access to opportunities of various kinds – from jobs to land, tenders and state development – to build forms of authority outside of the laws that regulate the state and the market. In some instances, elected leaders and government officials are directly complicit in these increasingly militant attacks and the political project that drives them.

First, the facts. 

Since March 2018, at least 213 people have been killed, 1 400 trucks torched and R1.2 billion worth of goods lost, largely along the route between the port in Durban and Gauteng. The instigators say the trucking industry must stop hiring “foreign nationals” and are demanding that the authorities do something to ensure that “the right people” are employed. 

The All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF), an organisation that represents truck drivers in South Africa, has warned that its “war” will continue “until all foreigners are gone”. 

Members are planning a national shutdown on 18 July, which they are calling “Trucking Black Day”. With four out of five goods in Gauteng shipped along the route from Durban – which is also a supply line to Zimbabwe, Malawi and elsewhere – such actions threaten national and regional economies. 

New targets

The ongoing violence suggests a shift in target. While the direct target of xenophobic violence has usually been international migrants, or outsiders in general, the current violence targets migrants and South African drivers indiscriminately. The South Africans who have been attacked are from elsewhere in the country or have shown inadequate loyalty to those wielding petrol bombs.

Attacking drivers is a form of political strong-arming designed to close the industry to all that those pushing the aforementioned political project label as outsiders. It is an open war, not only on truck drivers but also owners and the trucking industry as a whole. It is a dangerous development that warrants concern.

This is not an isolated development. For years, metered taxi drivers have attacked Uber drivers – sometimes imposing exclusive claims on access to key nodes in the transport network – and in some instances with apparent impunity. And groups such as the Delangokubona Business Forum have been using armed intimidation to gain access to private construction budgets. 

These kinds of tactics are frequently mediated through claims about opportunities for “locals” that explicitly exclude migrants and people from different parts of South Africa. Now that the trucking industry is under attack, it does not seem unreasonable to wonder if similar threats will develop in other industries.

Feeble government efforts

Government efforts to counter assaults on those working in the trucking industry have been feeble. Some perpetrators have been arrested, but few have been prosecuted. Many of those arrested have been charged with a traffic offence and released on bail of R500.  

Officials have condemned the violence but seem unprepared to take effective action against perpetrators. Minister of Police Bheki Cele hascharacterised the attacks on trucks as economic sabotage. This is true, but labelling them as such denies the immense social and political consequences of these attacks. 

What is at stake extends well beyond debates relating to migration or protection for South Africa’s struggling workers in a time of mass structural unemployment and economic decline. It is disingenuous, and dangerous, to dismiss these as attacks on people who “shouldn’t be here anyway”. Making this about migration distracts us from what matters. 

South Africa’s unemployment rate is officially over 27%. It is far higher in the places where violence typically occurs. But this violence is not about removing migrants, it is more generally about a dangerous politics of localism and entitlement, and rationing access to rights and opportunities: housing, healthcare, education, business opportunities, labour markets and the like. It is about the emergence of a politics of local strongmen in response to a general breakdown in trust in the rule of law.

Exclusion as ammunition

Government officials often act to placate such assertions and sentiments even while publicly condemning the violence they beget. Throughout the country, local political battles are being fought with exclusion as ammunition. 

This was a repeated feature of contestation during recent election campaigns. Tacitly or explicitly endorsing exclusion can win votes or popularity for officials and institutions whose legitimacy is under threat. Promising to exclude people from another country, another party, another township or another province can bolster political careers for those who have little else to offer. 

Whether driven from within or outside of the state, or an alliance of actors in and outside of the state, a politics of exclusion offers short-term political gains for a few while exacerbating the weakness of South Africa’s already fragile national economy. It reduces the prospects of constitutional protection and democratic forms of disputation for the many. Every victory creates further incentives for violent exclusion, a process that is seldom restricted to people who do not hold South African citizenship.

Whether in Gugulethu, Ermelo or Durban, local residents regularly exclude people deemed to be “outsiders” regardless of their citizenship. Whether it is jobs, houses, municipal services or living spaces, people are denied rights on the grounds of where they are from, even when that is elsewhere in South Africa. This fragments the economy and limits the benefits of trade and domestic mobility. It is also an expression of an ongoing attack on democratic values. 

Just as we debate the ethics of vigilante violence – of which these attacks on truck drivers are a particular offshoot – we must ask who we want rationing the rights to jobs, business and housing. Closing the borders to Zimbabwe and Mozambique may look to some like the country asserting its independence, but such reactionary moves will not sustain or promote South African jobs or business. 

For now, that is beside the point. The impulse to exclude threatens to draw boundaries and divides at every level across the country. South Africans rightfully worry about the lingering effects of racism and the economic marginalisation of previously oppressed groups. Yet in ensuring that everyone has equal access to the country’s scarce but adequate resources, whose interests are served by South Africans violently excluding each other?
