Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card Review: More Details

The Amazon Prime Visa Signature card comes with a head-turning number: 5% on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. The card has many of the same features as its predecessor – the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card – and it improves on the regular Amazon Rewards card by offering an unlimited 5% rewards rate on Amazon.com purchases.

For current Amazon Prime subscribers, the Prime card is worth the hoopla. Besides the fact that you will have a shiny, metal card to show off (yes, the Amazon Prime card is made of metal), the card comes with some useful purchase and travel protections, and, of course, a higher rewards rate. However, you’ll need to shell out $119 for Amazon Prime membership just to obtain the card. While you can get far more than $119 worth of value out of Prime membership, the service doesn’t necessarily make sense for every cardholder.

Tip: Amazon Prime membership on its own comes with very valuable benefits, including free two-day shipping and Amazon Video. If you aren’t currently an Amazon Prime member, we recommend looking in to the full list of benefits to see whether Prime Membership — and, by extension, the Amazon Prime card —  make sense for you. (Learn more in our article, “Is Amazon Prime worth it?”)

Sign-up bonus

You can earn a $150 Amazon gift certificate as soon as your application is approved as a sign-up bonus. An instant gift certificate is Amazon’s “business as usual” sign-up bonus, and the current $150 offer is a good bit higher than the card’s former bonus of a $100 gift certificate.

Earning Amazon points

The unlimited 5% return on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases us bank mobile banking app the best thing the card has to offer. While there are competing cards that also offer a 5% rewards rate on Amazon purchases, they come with seasonal restrictions and limit the 5% rate to the first $1,500 in purchases. The card also offers 2% back on restaurants, gas stations and drug store purchases (and 1% back on the remainder of your purchases), adding up to a high earning rate overall.

For someone who already subscribes to Amazon Prime, an unlimited 5% bonus is mere icing on the cake. However, other applicants will need to weigh the value of Amazon Prime benefits before springing for the card. You’ll need to pay $119 for Amazon Prime membership before you apply, and, though Amazon Prime does offer very valuable benefits, the rewards that you earn from the card are unlikely to outweigh the membership fee.

Even when you factor in the $150 gift card that Amazon offers to new cardholders, the $119 annual fee for Amazon Prime membership takes a chunk out of your potential rewards earnings after your first year. If you spend less than $1,500 on Amazon purchases each year, you may be better off applying for an alternative rotating rewards card that offers 5% earnings on Amazon purchases and pairing it with a cash back card that offers a 1.5 to 2 cash back rate on everyday spending.

Bonus for Whole Foods customers

Whole Foods customers may be delighted to learn that the 5% bonus rate also applies to Whole Food purchases – both online and at the register. Frequent shoppers with Whole Foods can earn a substantial amount of rewards with the Amazon Prime card. In fact, if you spend at least $2,380 at Whole Foods each year, your earnings with the card will cancel out the cost of your Prime Membership.

Select rotating categories on Amazon will also earn extra rewards up to 20% on capital one secured credit card limit of the default 5% bonus. While the 20% number may usaa homeowners insurance foundation repair enticing, however, these bonus categories won’t make up the bulk of your purchases and can be somewhat niche.

Redeeming Amazon points

Amazon aims to make sign-up for the Amazon Prime card and rewards redemption as seamless as possible. Current members of Amazon Prime with an Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card will be automatically upgraded to the new card. While you are waiting to receive your new Amazon Prime card in the online fifth third, you can log in and link your current Visa Signature card to your account to start receiving the 5% bonus.

Redeeming points on Amazon

Amazon allows you to conveniently apply your points at the point of purchase

Once the card is linked to your Amazon Prime account, choose the card as your payment option, input the number of points you want to use, and Amazon will instantly apply them to your purchase.

If you don’t want to use your points for Amazon purchases, Amazon gives you a few other redemption options, including statement credits, deposit into a checking or savings account, gift cards and travel rewards.

Other Amazon redemption options

You can redeem Amazon points for cash back, gift cards or travel

While you’ll need to collect a minimum of 2,000 to 2,500 points to qualify for one of these alternative options, the good news is that you get a value of 1 cent per point no matter which way you redeem your points. (However, you’ll need to call in to Chase’s travel center to redeem your points for travel – for convenience’s sake, you may want to avoid this option.)

Unfortunately, although this is a Chase card, there are no options to transfer points to other Chase cards. Also, points can be applied only to one Amazon Prime account. Cardholders searching for a card with more versatile points would be better off checking out Chase’s line of Ultimate Rewards cards.

Purchase protections

The Amazon Prime card offers several protections to help protect your purchases made online. The card guarantees zero fraud liability – which means you are never liable for unauthorized purchases made with your card. The card also includes:

  • Purchase protection – Your card covers you for 120 days against damage or theft of purchases, up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account.
  • Extended warranty protection – For eligible warranties of three years or less, your card will extend the warranty period by an additional year.

Travel protections

If you’re reading this review, it’s likely that you are considering the Amazon Prime card mainly for Amazon purchases. You may be surprised to learn that the Prime card also makes a good travel companion, thanks to its collection of Visa Signature benefits, including:

  • No foreign transaction fees – The card doesn’t charge transaction fees on purchases made outside the U.S. (which means the card also spares you a 2% to 3% fee for purchases on Amazon sites in foreign countries).
  • Travel and emergency assistance – Cardholders are eligible for legal, medical and other emergency services while traveling.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement—The card covers you and your family members for checked and carry-on bags that are lost or damaged by a carrier – up to $3,000 per passenger.
  • Baggage delay insurance – The card nhl san jose sharks reimburse for you essential purchases in case your luggage gets delayed while traveling – up to $100 per day up to three days, for delays of six hours or longer.
  • Travel accident insurance – The card offers up to $500,000 in coverage for accidental death or dismemberment while traveling.
  • Auto rental collision damage waiverPhone number santander customer service card offers secondary coverage (coverage that applies in case another policy doesn’t apply) for theft or damage to a rental car purchased with the card.
  • Roadside dispatch – You can call 24-hour roadside service through the card (for a fee) if you have roadside emergency.

While this is a fair list of protections, if you’re looking for a card to cover you in case of travel emergencies, you may be better off searching for a card that offers broader travel protections, particularly trip cancellation and interruption insurance (The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a good option).

Customer experience

The Amazon Prime Rewards card is issued through Chase bank, which has a fairly good record on customer service. Chase recently scored 809 on J.D. Power’s 2020 customer satisfaction, coming in fourth place out of 11 major issuers. The Chase mobile app also rates well with its users, scoring a 4.8 out of 5 on the Apple Store and 4.4 out of 5 on Google Play store. Chase offers convenient, round-the-clock customer service for its cardholders. One drawback: Chase doesn’t include mobile chat on its website – a loss for cardholders seeking to get a simple question answered quickly.

Is this card the same as the Amazon Store card?

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature card is not the same as the Amazon Store card. To some shoppers’ confusion, Amazon also offers a store card that includes special Amazon financing and a 5% bonus on Amazon purchases when you subscribe to Amazon Prime. The Amazon Store card is not a general-purpose credit card – it can only be used on Amazon purchases – is issued by a different bank (Synchrony) and features a much higher APR, so cardholders should take care not to mix the two cards up when applying.

Advantages

These advantages argue strongly in favor of applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.

1. Up to 5% Cash Back on Amazon and Whole Foods Purchases

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card’s distinguishing benefit is 5% cash back on purchases at Amazon and Whole Foods. There’s no limit to cardholders’ 5% earnings and virtually no restrictions on what they can buy.

Needless to say, this is a fantastic rate. Most other cash-back cards, even those charging annual fees, cap cash back below 5% or impose strict spending caps on categories that earn 5% or higher cash back.

2. Broad 2% Cash Back Categories

This card’s 2% cash-back categories span drugstores, restaurants, and gas stations. Most consumers spend regularly in at least one of these categories. When phone number santander customer service do, they’ll earn cash back at a very competitive rate.

3. Seamless Redemption Process

Thanks to Amazon’s Shop With Points feature, it’s incredibly easy to redeem your accrued Amazon Rewards points. Simply apply them against your Amazon transaction balances and get on with your life.

You can also redeem at Chase’s Ultimate Rewards dashboard, which is pretty easy to use too.

4. No Foreign Transaction Fee

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has no annual fee. That’s welcome news for cardholders who frequently venture outside the U.S., whether on road trips to Canada or international vacations to Europe and beyond.

5. No Direct Annual Fee

This card doesn’t charge an annual fee. If you’re already taking full advantage of your Amazon Prime membership, and you’d keep your Prime membership whether you had this card or not, there’s really no additional out-of-pocket cost here.

6. Solid Visa Signature Benefits

Though it’s not a proper travel rewards credit card, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has a nice lineup of Visa Signature benefits for shoppers and bakers com omaha. The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection perks are particularly nice, as are the various travel insurance inclusions.

7. No Penalty APR

This card has no penalty APR. If you occasionally miss statement due dates due to unforeseen expenses or cash crunches, this could save you hundreds of dollars in penalty interest each year.

Disadvantages

Consider these drawbacks before applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card.

1. Requires Paid-Up Amazon Prime Membership

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card requires a paid Amazon Prime membership to earn 5% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods purchases.

Prime membership costs $12.99 per month or $119 per year, roughly equivalent to the cost of a premium cash-back credit card like Blue Cash Preferred from American Express.

Prime has attractive benefits, such as free two-day shipping, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re not a Prime member already, or you feel you’re not getting your money’s worth from the program, think twice about applying for this card.

2. No 0% APR Introductory Promotion

This card does not have a 0% APR introductory promotion for purchases and balance transfers.

If you’re looking for a new home for your high-interest credit card balances or need to finance a major purchase, look to no-annual-fee cash back cards like Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited, both of which offer 15-month 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers.

3. Automatic Downgrade If Prime Membership Lapses

If you cancel your Prime membership or allow it to lapse due to nonpayment, you’ll lose this card’s 5% cash-back benefit. You can avoid this in the short term by choosing an annual Prime membership, but it’s something for tentative Prime members to keep in mind.

4. Low Baseline Rewards Rate

This card’s baseline rewards rate is low – just 1% back on purchases not covered by the 5% and 2% categories.

That’s a far cry from some competing cash-back cards’ baseline rates. The Citi Double Cash Card earns unlimited 2% cash back on all eligible spending, for instance.

Final Word

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has one job: to reward loyal Amazon Prime members for their continued patronage.

Its three-tiered rewards program earns up to 5% cash back on Amazon and Whole Foods Market purchases, rewarding cardholders who prefer to shop at home except when it’s time to restock the cupboard.

The promise of 2% back on purchases at restaurants, drugstores, and gas stations is nothing to sneeze at, either. For a card that technically doesn’t charge an annual fee, this is a pretty strong cash-back regime.

The bottom line? For heavy Amazon shoppers, this card may be well worth the Prime membership fee, even if you don’t use it outside the Amazon/Whole Foods ecosystem.

However, if you don’t spend enough at Amazon or Whole Foods to justify a Prime membership, you may want to give this card a pass – or at least stick to the truly no-annual-fee Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card. Attractive as this card is, it provides the best deals specifically to Amazon Prime members.

Is It Worth the Cost?

As mentioned earlier, there’s no annual fee for this card. To qualify for the 5% back rewards rate on Amazon purchases, you have to have an eligible Amazon Prime membership. That includes:

  • Annual and monthly Amazon Prime subscriptions, excluding Amazon Prime video subscriptions
  • Members who share Prime benefits via an Amazon Household
  • Amazon Prime Fresh
  • Amazon Family
  • Amazon Prime Student
  • Trial memberships of annual and monthly Amazon Prime subscriptions, Amazon Prime Fresh, and Amazon Prime Student (excluding Amazon Prime video subscriptions)

The standard Prime membership is $99. That breaks down to $8.25 a month. The best way to look at the math is this: how often do you use Prime services?

If you’re regularly streaming movies, music or TV, then $99 may be a small price to pay. The same goes if you regularly buy things on Amazon.

Free 2-day shipping is included on eligible Prime purchases. The money you could save alone on shipping could easily make up for the $99 subscription fee.

One other thing to consider is the annual percentage rate (APR).

There’s no low introductory APR for purchases or balance transfers with this card. The regular variable APR applies to everything you purchase or transfer.

The APR range pretty is broad and if you don’t have the best credit score, you may end up with a higher rate.

If you’re not paying in full each month, the APR could make the things you buy with the card more expensive.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card isn’t the only credit card that lets you earn rewards.

Another card may be more appealing if you have different spending habits. Here are other cards you might want to consider.

1.0 out of 5 starsWorst credit card experience as customer.

Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019

I applied for this card making sure my credit score was good enough to obtain it. I hate the feeling there are things out of my control so I studied all the requirements before sending the request. I'm a declared fan of all Amazon's products, this couldn't fail.
After a few days I got a letter from Chase asking me for some details such as my SSN card and a proof of residence. Fair. During that day, I went to a Chase office in person to show all my papers, and they said "you're approved". Effectively, I got my card a week later. It came with a described list of all basic steps: how to activate it, sign in for online account, etc. Even my Amazon account automatically assigned this card as my default payment method. To make sure it was properly working, I bought a couple of stuffs on Amazon without using the $70 gift card. I thought "I can use the benefit later" and it worked as expected.

Sounds like a nice story, right?

Well, next day I tried to pay my lunch with my brand-new Amazon Prime Visa but it was rejected. I didn't pay much attention and I just called by the end of the day to Chase. Surprise was to hear they'd decided to close my card without immediate notice. In addition, they said they didn't have access to the actual reasons. They just said I had to wait seven to ten days for a letter with the reasons. I must be honest, I was totally upset with this situation and I thought to send this feedback right away. But, what is a good review without the whole story?

Today I got the glorious letter. The reason? NOT ENOUGH CREDIT INFORMATION ON FILE.

Really? Don't they have the chance to check this after asking me for my SSN, ID, creating a hard inquiry on my credit score, etc? Don't they have the chance to check this information BEFORE SENDING THE PHYSICAL CARD?

I thought Chase + Amazon = best combination.

Now, for the very first time, I cannot recommend an Amazon product.

Every 100 points you earn is worth $1 for redemption purposes. Instead of being limited to statement credits, you’ve got lots of options for redeeming your rewards points.

Redeeming Amazon Prime rewards

So how can you put your Amazon Prime rewards to work? First, you can use them to shop at Amazon.com. You can pay for part or all of your purchase with points. There’s no minimum amount required to redeem.

You can buy millions of products on Amazon.com with Shop with Points but there are some limitations. For example, you can’t redeem points for:

  • Kindle downloads
  • Digital music
  • Amazon video titles
  • Amazon Appstore apps
  • Subscribe and Save items
  • Pre-order items
  • Textbook rentals
  • Prime membership

That’s something to keep in mind if you routinely make those kinds of purchases on Amazon.com.

Redeeming rewards through Chase

This card is issued by Chase, which issues most of the Amazon-branded credit cards. That means your redemption options go beyond just shopping at Amazon.

For example, you can redeem points for cash back. Every 2,000 points you redeem is worth $20 in cash rewards in the form of a statement credit.

Gift cards are another option. You can get a $25 gift card for every 2,500 points redeemed.

If you like to travel, you’re in luck. You can redeem points for travel purchases, including flights, hotels, cruises and car rentals.

Looking Beyond Rewards: Other Card Perks

The rewards program is undoubtedly the best feature of this credit card, but that’s not all you get. The card also comes packed with extras for travel and shopping.

Travel protections

If you travel a little or a lot, this card has got you covered. The following features are included in your card membership:

Travel accident insurance

When you charge air, bus, train or cruise fare to your card, you’re covered by up to $500,000 in accidental death or dismemberment insurance.

Lost luggage reimbursement

You’ve also got $3,000 in lost luggage reimbursement coverage per passenger if your bags are lost or damaged.

Baggage delay insurance

Having to wait for your bags to catch up with you once you reach your destination can be a pain.

This card offers reimbursement coverage for things like toiletries and clothing if your baggage is delayed by more than 6 hours. The coverage maxes out at $100 a day for three days.

Travel and emergency assistance

When you’re away from home, it’s always good to have someone you can call on for help.

Fortunately, card members can get help with legal and medical referrals or other travel and emergency assistance.

Roadside dispatch

You can also get help if you need a tow or a jumpstart or you just run out of gas. Any service fees related to the call are automatically charged to your card.

Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection

As a cardmember, you can choose from over 900 luxury hotels around the world. Cardmembers receive bonus goodies like the best available rate, automatic room upgrades when available and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi.

Visa Signature Concierge Service: Visa Signature Concierge Service is available 24 hours a day.

If you need help finding tickets to a sports or entertainment event, making dinner reservations or tracking down the perfect gift, concierge service is on standby.

Auto rental collision damage waiver

One final travel perk covers you if you’re renting a car. Your card comes with rental car insurance for most rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

Shopping protections

You can shop ‘til you drop without worrying about extra hassles. Your card comes with both extended warranty protection and purchase protection built in.

The extended warranty program extends your existing warranty for one year, on eligible warranties of three years or less. You’re also covered against damage or theft for the first 120 days, up to $500 per claim.

How It Compares to Other Rewards Cards

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card isn’t the only credit card that lets you earn rewards.

Another card may be more appealing if you have different spending habits. Here are other cards you might want to consider.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is designed for Amazon shoppers who want to earn rewards without paying the Prime membership fee.

This card offers 3% back at Amazon.com, 2% at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% everywhere else.

Virtually everything else is the same with this card, from the APR range to the travel and shopping protections.

The two biggest differences are the lower rewards rate on Amazon purchases and the fact that you don’t have to be a Prime member to get this card. If you don’t use Prime, this one could be a good alternative.

Chase Freedom Flex

The has a rotating cash back structure, with cardmembers earning 5% back on selected purchases each quarter. There’s no annual fee either.

One reason to consider this card is the potential to earn more rewards on Amazon purchases.

In the past, during certain promotion periods, Chase has increased the quarterly bonus on Amazon shopping to as much as 10%.

Read the Chase Freedom Flex editor's review.

Citi Double Cash

The  is the strong contender due to its simple cash back program, which could allow you to earn an effective 2% cash back on all spending.

It also have no annual fee.

Read the Citi Double Cash editor's review.

A No-Brainer For Amazon Prime Members

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card could be a great choice for anyone who does a lot of spending on Amazon but also uses their card for other purchases.

We wouldn’t recommend this one if you don’t want to pay the $99 subscription fee required for Prime membership.

Ultimately, this card is best suited for Amazon shoppers who already use Prime and want to get more points back on their purchases.
